  • Couple Sold Everything, Retired in Europe: Pros and Cons

Couple Sold Everything, Retired in Europe: Pros and Cons

Sandra and Jeff Mayernik had it all: successful careers as real estate agents, and a large custom-built home on five acres overlooking Oregon’s Cascade Mountains.

But over time, their idyllic life had become more stressful. Jeff suffered multiple heart attacks, their income stopped growing, and their bills kept rising. By 2023, the couple faced an uncomfortable truth: they were burned out and needed a change of scenery.

After selling everything they owned — their cars, home, and art collection — the Mayerniks, now retired, moved abroad. Since November 2023, they have traveled to or lived in about a dozen countries, including Panama, Costa Rica, Portugal, Spain, France, Mexico, and Argentina. Most recently, they’ve been living in Albania.

“It felt like a gut instinct that this place was good for us,” Sandra, now 62, told Business Insider.

In Albania, the couple has lived in Durrës, Pogradec, and now Saranda. While life overall has been good, the Mayerniks have experienced some growing pains.

Here are five pros and cons of living abroad, according to the Mayerniks.

It can feel lonely being far away from family

While the Mayerniks lived in different cities from their children and grandchildren back in the States, they were close to Sandra’s sisters, whom she saw on a regular basis.

“I miss a few things about the States, like going kayak fishing with my sisters and spending time with family,” Sandra said.

Being in another country miles and hours away from them has been challenging, and the couple admitted that they sometimes feel lonely.

“There’s a lack of face-to-face connection,” Jeff, 62, told me. “You lose contact with friends and family. You’re less involved in their day-to-day lives. Even if you’re really introverted, it sometimes feels like loneliness, because you don’t have that group.”

    They’re eating healthier in Albania

A huge benefit of living in Albania has been the access to high-quality, locally sourced food, which they said contains less sugar, dyes, and preservatives.

“We’ve definitely noticed feeling healthier,” Sandra said. “Our sugar intake has definitely gone down. The foods here aren’t as sweet as in most countries.”

Jeff said that even the packaged Ramen has less sodium.

“Occasionally, for lunch, we will cheat and have ramen and a handful of frozen vegetables. In the States, I could use maybe a third of the seasoning packet that came with my ramen, but the big shock we’ve had here is that when the whole packet goes in, it’s still not salty enough,” he added.

They’re spending less money on healthcare and housing

While the couple has not required any serious medical treatment or faced any emergencies while traveling around Albania, they have had to fill a few prescriptions.

Not only is the process simple, Jeff said, but it also costs far less than they anticipated.

“Healthcare is a lot more affordable; my medications usually cost less than my copay back in the States,” he said.

The couple is also saving a lot on housing. Before moving abroad, they briefly rented a 300-square-foot studio apartment in Redmond, Oregon, for $1,200 a month.

In Pogradec, however, they rented a large apartment with a full kitchen, a washer, and three balconies overlooking Lake Ohrid. Their short-term rental — which included utilities and high-speed internet — averaged about $1,100 a month. It would have been even cheaper had they signed a yearlong lease.

Learning a new language and currency has been difficult

Living in a different country means adapting to a new environment, which often involves picking up a new language, blending in with your surroundings, and, most fundamentally, learning how to navigate the local grocery store.

“You’re dealing in a different currency and a different language,” Jeff said. “So every trip to the grocery store is just a little more work.”

“Back in the US, I could walk into a Kroger, read every label, and instantly know what I was paying for,” he added. “Here, I once grabbed what looked like a package of ham — but it definitely wasn’t. Those little sorts of things, people get frustrated about, and it can build up.”

They have more freedom and feel less stressed

“The biggest benefit to living here is probably the slower pace of life,” Jeff said. “Here, people are just less hurried and harried.”

Instead of starting their days in an office or constantly checking their email, the Mayerniks are free to do as they please. They spend their days walking along the promenade by Lake Ohrid, reading, or relaxing on the beach.

Sandra noted that the sense of freedom has improved their quality of life.

“Before we left, I was a workaholic. In fact, when we decided to leave, I arranged with my principal broker to keep me on, working in an administrative capacity, because I really loved my job. But after about six to nine months on the road, I realized I didn’t want to do that anymore,” she said. “The stress just evaporated.”

  • Fei-Fei Li, the ‘Godmother of AI,’ Got Her Start As a Dry Cleaner

Fei-Fei Li, the ‘Godmother of AI,’ Got Her Start As a Dry Cleaner

Every influential scientist has an origin story — and the “Godmother of AI” is no different.

Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor best known for her work on ImageNet, is now the founder of World Labs, a one-year-old AI startup that’s already valued at over $1 billion.

Her start, however, was far more humble.

Li immigrated to the United States from China at the age of 15 and helped her parents run a dry-cleaning business in Parsippany, New Jersey, to make ends meet.

“We were not financially very well off at all. My parents were doing cashier jobs and I was doing Chinese restaurant jobs,” she told Bloomberg in a Q&A. “My family and I decided to run a little dry cleaner shop to make some money to survive.”

Li said she likes to joke that she was the “CEO.” She ran the shop for seven years, from when she was 18 until the middle of her graduate studies.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Li attended Princeton University for college, keeping her close to her parents’ shop. Later, while pursuing her Ph.D. at Caltech in California, she continued to run the business remotely.

“I was the one who spoke English. So I took all the customer phone calls, I dealt with the billing, the inspections, all the business,” she said.

The experience, she said, taught her the value of resilience — a principle that continues to guide her career.

“As a scientist, you have to be resilient because science is a non-linear journey. Nobody has all the solutions. You have to go through such a challenge to find an answer. And as an immigrant, you learn to be resilient,” she said.

At World Labs, Li has big ambitions. She is working on building world models. These are AI models that leverage spatial intelligence, which Li says is “the ability for AI to understand, perceive, reason and interact (with the world). It comes from a continuation of visual intelligence.”

A growing number of AI experts believe that world models are what will propel the AI revolution into its next phase. Some believe large-language models, which are trained on, as the name suggests, language, and on which the leading products are now based, are limited.

Li said ImageNet, a comprehensive training dataset of visual information, was a precursor to world models.

At the core of Li’s research is the idea that visual information, a passive way of understanding the world, is a crucial foundation for real-world action, which remains one of the ultimate goals of some top AI builders, like Meta Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun, who recently announced he would step down to launch his own world model startup.

The through-line between Li’s research and her immigrant story is the same.

“I was always a curious kid, and then my curiosity had an outlet, which was science — and that really grounded me,” she told Bloomberg. “I wasn’t curious about nightclubs or other things. I was an avid lover of science.”

‘Hunger Games’ Stars, Ranked From Least to Most Successful

Josh Hutcherson played Peeta Mellark, one of Katniss’ love interests and co-District 12 tribute, in all four films. Despite not knowing Katniss very well, he reveals he has feelings for her, which spirals into a storyline for the pair.

Their “love” story, which is played up for the games, results in them surviving the games in the first film. The two grow closer and, even through torture, memory loss, and a second game, end up together in “Mockingjay Part 2.”

Hutcherson was a well-known child star before getting cast in “The Hunger Games.” To name a few, he was in “Kicking and Screaming,” “Little Manhattan,” “Zathura,” “Bridge to Terabithia,” and “The Kids Are All Right.”

He also had a mini-franchise under his belt, with “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.”

While he was a co-lead of the franchise, its success took years to translate into success for Hutcherson’s box-office career post-“Hunger Games.”

He’s been in more than a few flops, like “The Forger,” “Red Dawn,” “Escobar: Paradise Lost,” “Elliot the Littlest Reindeer,” and “Burn.” He’s also been in a few solid films, like “Epic,” “The Disaster Artist,” and “Tragedy Girls.”

For a few years, he found more success in streaming. He starred in and executive-produced all three seasons of Hulu’s “Future Man,” and he voiced Ultraman in the English dub of the anime series “Ultraman” from 2019 to 2023.

But recently, things have been turning around for Hutcherson. Besides that iconic “Whistle” meme that took over TikTok, he’s now the star of the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” franchise. The first installment was a surprise box-office hit in 2023, grossing almost $300 million. A sequel is set for December 5, 2025, just a month after Hutcherson made his return to TV on HBO’s “I Love LA.”

He also had a solid role in the Jason Statham action film “The Beekeeper” in 2024, which was also successful.

Hutcherson, 33, has 2 million followers on Instagram and 2 million followers on X.

  • Best Canned Pumpkin Uses + Which Recipes to Avoid, According to Chefs

Best Canned Pumpkin Uses + Which Recipes to Avoid, According to Chefs

    • We asked chefs for the best ways to use canned pumpkin and recipes where fresh is best.
    • Canned pumpkin can work well in smoothies, mac and cheese, cocktails, or curry.
    • One culinary pro said it’s often better to use fresh pumpkin in pies, muffins, and cakes.

Although you may only associate it with holiday pies or spiced lattes, pumpkin is actually a versatile fruit that shines in a variety of sweet and savory dishes.

When using pumpkin in the kitchen, many opt for the canned stuff. Fortunately, canned pumpkin can be an accessible ingredient that elevates all sorts of dishes, drinks, and desserts.

However, some recipes benefit from using fresh pumpkin — even if a little more chopping and preparation is required.

For a little help on deciding which route to take, Business Insider asked chefs to share their favorite and least favorite ways to use canned pumpkin.

Use canned pumpkin to elevate mac and cheese.

Chef and culinary consultant Clare Langan told BI that she likes to put canned pumpkin in mac and cheese.

“Just stir canned pumpkin into the cheese sauce with freshly chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, or sage,” Langan said. “Add some freshly grated nutmeg and voilà.”

Langan said she suggests using more robust cheeses, such as Gruyère or sharp cheddar, when making pumpkin mac and cheese.

Making pumpkin butter may be easier than you think.

Pumpkin butter is an indulgent spread that’s fairly easy to make at home.

“Make pumpkin butter by simmering canned pumpkin with maple syrup or brown sugar, and then add a few tablespoons of butter and a dash of pumpkin-pie spice,” said Langan.

Cool the mixture and store it in the fridge. You can also dip apples in it or swirl it into oatmeal

Canned pumpkin can make a curry creamier.

If you’re looking to add sweetness and color to your next curry, try stirring in a bit of canned pumpkin purée.

“Canned pumpkin is great in red or yellow curries,” Langan said. “The flavor of pumpkin can be rather neutral, so go heavier on the curry paste and fish sauce.”

Finish the curry with several squeezes of fresh lime to add a touch of brightness to the dish.

Use it to make a filling smoothie with an autumnal twist.

For a sweet drink that feels like fall, Langan said to try adding canned pumpkin and pecans to a smoothie.

“All you have to do is blend a spoonful of pumpkin with milk, a frozen banana, vanilla protein powder, a handful of toasted pecans, and ice,” said Langan.

For extra autumnal flavor, add a sprinkle of cinnamon or pumpkin-pie spice.

Try adding canned pumpkin and maple syrup to your mashed potatoes.

Robert Carr, executive chef at La Cantera Resort and Spatold BI that he likes to use pumpkin and maple syrup to give mashed potatoes a unique twist.

“Pumpkin adds such depth of flavor to buttery whipped potatoes,” he said. “Just take your favorite mashed-potato recipe and add pumpkin purée and maple syrup to taste.”

If necessary, reduce the amount of cream or butter in your mashed-potato recipe to keep the dish from becoming too watery after the addition of the pumpkin purée.

Canned pumpkin can be used as a substitute for eggs in bread.

Chef Tracy Wilk said that canned pumpkin can be used as a vegan-friendly egg substitute in many quick bread recipes.

“You can use a quarter cup of canned pumpkin for each egg your bread recipe calls for,” Wilk said. “It adds delicious nutrients and a slight pumpkin flavor.”

Wilk especially recommends trying pumpkin as an egg substitute in zucchini bread.

Try a fall-flavored margarita with canned pumpkin and cider.

Don Baiocchi, recipe developer at The Paleo Gluten-Free Guytold BI that canned pumpkin is an unexpected but delicious addition to a classic margarita.

“Just combine spiced apple cider, tequila, and canned pumpkin in a cocktail shaker. Strain into a glass rimmed with smoky sea salt and you’re done,” he said.

You can adjust the amount of pumpkin purée in this cocktail to your taste, or substitute the tequila with vodka.

You can make a creamy, dairy-free pasta sauce with pumpkin.

Canned pumpkin can add flavor, creaminess, and richness to pasta dishes.

“Make a creamy sauce for pasta by using pumpkin as the ‘cream’ element in a tomato sauce,” Wilk said. “I especially love serving this sauce with squash ravioli.”

If you’re not ready to totally cut cream from your sauce, try replacing half of the amount called for with pumpkin purée.

Use canned pumpkin to easily whip up a vegan ice cream.

For an easy fall dessert, Baiocchi said, try making your own vegan ice cream with bananas and canned pumpkin.

“In a food processor, add two frozen and chopped bananas, a quarter can of canned pumpkin, and maple syrup to taste,” he said. “Mix in spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.”

If you prefer a harder ice-cream consistency, simply pop the blended ice cream in the freezer for a few hours.

Pumpkin is a sweet addition to a classic French toast.

You can make French toast more exciting by adding a helping of canned pumpkin to the batter.

“Just take your standard French toast mix and add pumpkin purée,” Carr said. “I like to use sweet Hawaiian bread to make the dish extra indulgent.”

You can even top your pumpkin French toast with whipped cream, crunchy granola, a drizzle of maple syrup, and a dusting of cinnamon.

On the other hand, canned pumpkin isn’t always the best for soups.

For pumpkin soup, you may want to use fresher ingredients. Narsil / Shutterstock

Chef Clay Debattista of Chapa Catering told BI that pumpkin soup benefits from the use of fresh fruit rather than canned.

“Roasted fresh pumpkin gets a caramelized flavor that really improves pumpkin soup,” he said. “You don’t get that flavor with canned pumpkin.”

If you make soup with canned pumpkin, consider adding caramelized vegetables and onions, or roasted garlic, to add more depth to its flavor.

Canned pumpkin isn’t actually ideal for pie.

Although the canned stuff is convenient, it’s really not the most flavorful way to make pumpkin pie, Debattista said.

“Making pumpkin pie with fresh pumpkin rather than canned means you get this beautiful nutty flavor that develops when the pie is in the oven,” he added.

Fresh pumpkin could improve the texture of your cake and muffins better than canned stuff.

If you’re making a pumpkin-flavored cake, opt for the fresh fruit instead.

“Fresh pumpkin becomes very creamy when blended,” Debattista said. “This unique texture makes it ideal for baking into a cake.”

This tip can also be applied to other cake-like pumpkin treats, such as muffins or sweet breads.

  • Jay Leno Says Caring for His Wife, Who Has Dementia, Isn’t ‘Work’

Jay Leno Says Caring for His Wife, Who Has Dementia, Isn’t ‘Work’

Jay Leno, 75, says he finds joy in caring for his wife, Mavis Leno, amid her dementia diagnosis.

“I’ve been very lucky in my life. My wife is fighting dementia and all that, but it’s not cancer. It’s not a tumor, so I enjoy taking care of her,” Leno told People on Sunday at the 34th Annual Love Ride event in California.

Leno met his wife in the ’70s at a comedy club in Los Angeles, and they married in 1980. In April 2024, he was granted conservatorship over her estate following her diagnosis.

The former late-night host says he doesn’t see caregiving as a burden.

“It’s not working, because people come up, and say they feel so sorry. I understand the sympathy, because I know a lot of people are going through it, but it’s OK,” Leno said.

“I like taking care of her. I enjoy her company, and we have a good time. We have fun with it, and it is what it is,” he added.

For Leno, this season is just another chapter in the life they’ve built together.

“There are going to be a couple of years that are tricky. So, the first 46, really great. But it’s OK. It’s not terrible. I’m not a woe-is-me person. I’m just lucky that I am able to take care of her,” he said.

During an April appearance on the “In Depth with Graham Bensinger” podcast, Leno said taking care of his wife is part of his commitment to her.

“At some point in my life, I’m going to be called upon to defend myself. I think that’s really what defines a marriage. I mean, that’s really what love is. That’s what you do. I mean, I’m glad I didn’t cut and run. I’m glad I didn’t run off with some woman half my age or any of that silly nonsense. I would rather be with her than doing something else,” Leno told host Graham Bensinger.

Speaking to People in September, Leno said he always makes sure to be home at night, even on days when he has to travel for work.

“I come home every day. I went to Puerto Rico for the day and (the) plane waited, and I came right back,” he said. “That’s what I do. I try to be home every night.”

Other celebrities have also spoken about the challenges of being a caregiver to a loved one.

In August 2024, Yvette Nicole Brown said she made a “heartbreaking, guilt-ridden choice” to put her father, who has Alzheimer’s, into a care home after being his primary caregiver for over a decade.

“No longer having my dad with me every day breaks my heart, but I know — just as I did when I left ‘Community’ to care for him — I’ve made the right decision for him. His needs come first, always,” Brown told Business Insider in a statement.

Speaking to Diane Sawyer for an ABC Special in September, Emma Heming Willis said she had moved her husband, Bruce Willis, who has frontotemporal dementia, to a separate home where he has round-the-clock care.

“But I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters. You know, he would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs,” Heming Willis said.

  • My 20-Year-Old Son and I Had Never Hung Out — Until Our First Cruise

My 20-Year-Old Son and I Had Never Hung Out — Until Our First Cruise

My son is 20, but I can’t think of a time when just the two of us hung out one-on-one. I went on numerous individual outings with his two sisters, shopping or dining at restaurants, but never alone with him.

My recent two-week cruise to England, Scotland, and Norway was supposed to be a trip with my older daughter — and her twin sister — but she had to back out.

My son stepped in, giving us a rare opportunity to connect as mother and son.

The backstory of how we got here

When I learned the gender of my twins while I was pregnant, I’ll admit I was nervous about having a boy and a girl. Everyone else we would have the “perfect” American family, but two girls sounded more manageable.

I had no idea what it meant to raise a son. I grew up with two sisters, so boys were kind of a mystery. Even though I had a husband, I still felt unprepared to understand the male experience.

I did my best, though. I watched “Thomas & Friends” (which was surprisingly soothing), threw a Minecraft Creeper party, and cheered from the sidelines while he dominated in tennis matches.

But it never occurred to me to say, “Hey, do you want to celebrate that win with Chipotle?” So when this unexpected travel twist came up, I couldn’t help thinking that maybe this was my chance to finally get to know my son better.

Two weeks at sea with the youngest passenger

I should’ve researched Viking cruises before booking. Based on our conversations with other passengers, the average age was somewhere around 80, and almost everyone was married. That meant my 20-year-old son was roughly 60 years younger than most of our shipmates. But he ended up loving the attention and chatting with everyone.

There were a few awkward moments, though. On our first night, when we checked in for dinner, I gave the hostess my name and room number. She smiled and said, “Follow me and I’ll show you to your table, Mr. and Mrs. Maguire.” We exchanged a look that said, technically true, but also ew. Once we sat down, I made sure to clarify, “My son is so excited to be on this cruise!” After that, she made a point to call us by our first names for the rest of the trip.

Another time, a passenger asked my son if he’d gotten on the wrong boat, referring to his young age. Without missing a beat, he compared one of the ship’s lectures to the astronomy class he’d just finished in his sophomore year. Ten minutes later, they were deep in conversation about black holes and favorite professors. Leave it to him to turn a gentle dig into an intergenerational study group. I was in awe of him.

My favorite part of the cruise was the daily tea time

Each afternoon, we headed to the atrium to sip through a selection of fruit-infused teas (yes, we tried every flavor). The teas were predictable, but the food changed daily with an assortment of desserts and bite-sized sandwiches.

Cheryl Maguire and her son on the beach

On the first day, I thought, “My daughter would have loved this.” But by the end, my son, who usually avoids tea and anything sugary, liked it. I loved seeing him appreciate the ritual and enjoyed it because I did.

It felt like the first time we were able to actually connect over something.

We’re already planning our next trip

This was my son’s first trip to Europe, and the fjords might be the most beautiful scenery we’ve ever seen. But the best part was experiencing it all with him.

Thanks to our one-on-one time, I saw a new side of my son. He’s now more open to adventures — unlike his younger self. Now that I know this, I’m excited to try more things with him in the future.

On our flight home, we had a layover in Germany. He turned to me and said, “This is the next country I want to visit.” Looks like I’ve got my marching orders for our next trip.

“‘Eden’ is the voyage along the endless river carved between mountains of joy and loss, of experience and exhaustion. We glide over a teeming riverbed of relationships and love, revealing the path itself is the point,” Emerson said in a press release. “‘Eden’ came from the first studio session I had with Bullion after the last ‘& the Charm’ live tour in late 2023. That day in London made me realize that making this kind of music is not just a detour from DJing and dance music, but the entrance to a deep cave, full of passages to wander.”

After signing to Dead Oceans earlier this year, Emerson launched the singles series Perpetual Emotion Machine. As part of the series, she formally released “E After Next,” a rework of Moby’s “Next Is the E” that had become a staple of her DJ sets. • The 9 Best Augmented Reality Games

The 9 Best Augmented Reality Games

    Photo: Tomohiro Ohsumi/Getty Images

Augmented reality has a ton of practical uses, like telling you where to walk or letting you visualize what a toilet or Ikea bookcase might look like in your living room. But what about having a little fun? AR lets you do that, too, with games! To some extent.

I spent some time over the last week playing AR games, and, well, I tested a lot of very bad ones. Ones that were boring, or finicky, or required me to move around more than I was feeling at that particular point in time, or required a large amount of open space in my small Brooklyn apartment. The joy and the frustration of AR is that it forces you to interact with the actual world around you instead of just tapping on your phone and feeling a rush of endorphins. That’s a tough balance to strike! These were the good games.

If you want a good idea of what AR can do, Not enoughémon Go is the gold standard. The game transposes the addictive monster-hunting franchise to your phone, allowing you to catch Pokémon standing virtually right in front of you, and then use them to fight for control of real-world locations. It’s a game that enhances your surroundings instead of tearing you away from them. If you want a Pokémon–free version of this, check out Ingress.

Simple but fun. In Stack ARyou need to time your taps so that discs sliding across the screen land directly on top of each other, forming a tower. Miss your taps and the area gets smaller, but settle into a groove and you’ll hear “Do-Re-Mi.” You don’t need to play it in AR, but if you want, you can watch your tower rise out of the floor and see the full result in all its glory when you eventually lose.

Splitter Critters is another game you don’t Haven to play in AR, but it’s nice if you want. The puzzle game requires you to bisect the screen and shift platforms in order to help an alien get to his ship. In AR, each puzzle is presented as a diorama, and the game is given literal depth. The controls can be a bit unwieldy as your perspective shifts along with the environment, but you’ll get the hang of it. I believe in you.

In a similar but more story-focused vein, Shadows Remain is an AR horror game that requires the player to inspect different dioramas and solve puzzles in order to find a missing family. The environments are impressively detailed but not to the point that you’ll get lost.

If you liked Monument Valleythe MC Escher–esque puzzle game that plays with perspective, you’ll probably like ARise. The game requires you to circle a virtual environment, literally positioning your camera to form platforms and help a hiker get to the end of each level. Bear in mind, this might involve a lot of crouching, so watch your knees.

Conduct AR! (get it??) tasks you with making sure the trains run on time. Detailed virtual train tracks appear in AR, and by stalling trains and flipping switches, it’s your job to make sure every locomotive gets to the right place. Just make sure you’ve got enough floor space so you don’t stumble into any furniture like I did.

If you crave an official AR Tamagotchi experience, this game works well enough. Most of the game doesn’t use AR at all, but I managed to find one game, Hide and Seek, that lets you survey a little diorama over your town and find your tiny charges. (This isn’t related to AR but I can’t mention that this game requires you to tap on moaning Tamagotchi to make them poop.)

If you want a more AR-focused Tamagotchi–like piece of software, try Follow Me Dragon. It’s simple: you feed your dragon cookies and candy and buy them costumes. I gave my dragon a top hat and a monocle and then took a photo of it standing on my unkempt bed. Fantastic.

If you’re looking for a real showpiece, check out The Machines (cool title, lol), which Apple demoed onstage in 2017. Just clear off your table and gather a few friends around it to play this impressively detailed robot combat game. Most AR games are solitary, asynchronous experiences, but The Machines gives you a decent excuse to try out some new tech and roast your friends.

The Chinese Smartphone Makers You Should Know in 2019

Every iPhone has it: the small etching reading “Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China.” And while China still assembles phones for Apple, in mid-2018, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei surpassed Apple to become the second-largest manufacturer of smartphones on the planet, second only to Samsung. China — the single largest market for smartphones in the world — isn’t just where smartphones are put together for foreign companies anymore.

While the smartphone market may not be the rocket ship it once wasa new class of Chinese smartphone manufacturers are quickly coming into their own, many posting double-digit sales growth and finding profitable niches in markets across the globe, whether that’s continental Europe, India, Latin America, or Africa. neither companies like LG or HTC eye exiting the smartphone space altogetherand Samsung attempts to realign its brand around mid-tier phones, hyperaggressive Chinese companies stand uniquely well-positioned to take advantage.

One place you won’t find many of these brands? US store shelves, due to pushback from a US government that sees Chinese manufacturers as both a security and business threat. US carriers have therefore been reluctant to sell phones from Chinese manufacturers. But governments change, and so do attitudes. Your next phone may not come from a Chinese company, but the phone you buy after that may very well. With some help from Gartner analyst Anshul Gupta, here are the Chinese smartphone makers that will be shaping the face of the mobile industry over the next decade.

Smartphones Sold in 2017: 150 million
    Flagship Model: Huawei P20 Pro
Ideal User: Anyone in the global upper-middle class

Huawei (pronounced, for Huawei itself, “wah-way”) popped up on many Americans’ radars after its CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested by Canadian police for potentially violating American sanctions against Iran. While it’s unclear how that case will play out, the company itself has quickly become a major global presence on the smartphone market, becoming the second-largest manufacturer of smartphones in mid-2018, surpassing Apple and second only to Samsung. A shift away from low-end handsets has worked out for Huawei, where its high-end phones have been enthusiastically received in Europe, the Middle East, and China itself. “It’s a global player with strong distribution, brand, and a broad portfolio,” says Gupta. It did well even during a downturn in the Chinese consumer market, and spent much of 2017 and 2018 on an acquisition spree. It wouldn’t be surprising for Huawei to eventually snap up some of the other brands on this list for itself.

Smartphones Sold in 2017: 112.4 million
    Flagship Model: Oppo Find X
Ideal User: Someone who wants a phone that turns heads

Oppo phones have done exceptionally well in the still-developing markets of India and Southeast Asia, where it pushed aside the former leader Samsung with low-cost, high-quality phones that look much more expensive than they are. It managed to get global attention in mid-2018 with the Oppo Find Xone of the first phones to have no bezel whatsoever, even hiding the front-facing camera behind the screen — an ambitious design that other companies will only be catching up to in 2019, showing that Oppo is serious about competing for the European and UK market. “Oppo has a strong brand, distribution, and premium positioning,” says Gupta.

Smartphones Sold in 2017: 99.7 million
    Flagship Model: Vivo Nex
Ideal User: Mid-market customers who still want something shiny

Vivo was one of the first Chinese manufacturers to move into India, where it sold low-cost handsets when Indian consumers were first starting to buy. It turned heads when it released what was then the world’s thinnest smartphone, the X1, in 2012, and has continued to do so with clever engineering. The Vivo Nex, a mid-budget phone with an all-screen design, solves the problem of where to put the front-facing camera by having the camera pop out of the phone in a very R2-D2-esque manner when you want to take a selfie.

Smartphones Sold in 2017: 89 million
Flagship Model: Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro
Ideal User: Apple lovers who don’t love Apple prices

Beijing-based Xiaomi knows what its users want: phones that look like iPhones, but don’t cost as much as an iPhone. Catch a glimpse of a Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro from across the room, and you’d be hard-pressed to say whether it was or wasn’t an iPhone X. It’s a strategy particularly well-suited for the Chinese market, where Xiaomi remains the top-selling brand, as Chinese users use WeChat, a messaging app that’s essentially an operating system unto itself, allowing users to do everything from send a photo to pay their rent to apply for college — and WeChat works equally well on Android or iOS. It’s also found success in other markets where consumers like the aesthetics of the iPhone, but don’t care much about actually using iOS or being in Apple’s ecosystem.

Smartphones Sold in 2017: 50.5 million
    Flagship Phone: ZTE Axon 9
Ideal User: Prepaid-phone-plan buyers or anyone looking for a phone on the cheap

ZTE was, until very recently, one of the most popular brands in the US, thanks to often being packaged in deals with prepaid cell phone plans from carriers like MetroPCS. The US Commerce Department abruptly banned the phone maker from working with American manufacturers, which would have crippled the company, after ZTE admitted to shipping parts to Iran and North Korea. After paying over $1 billion in fines, ZTE is recovering, and continues to carve out a spot for itself in the affordable market segment.

Smartphones Sold in 2017: 47.5 million
    Flagship Model: Motorola G6 Plus
Ideal User: Savvy North American phone shoppers who love a good deal

After Google stripped Motorola for patents and parts, it sold the former American phone manufacturer to Chinese firm Lenovo in 2014, where Lenovo has had success using Motorola’s brand recognition to sell very well-built and reasonably priced phones, successfully establishing a comfortable niche as the budget smartphone of choice for savvy North American phone shoppers. Motorola has also been happy to experiment phones have played around with similar ideas modular phones, shatterproof screens, batteries users can pop in and outhours rolling out the first phones with insanely fast 5G data connectionsbut its bread and butter remains things like the Motorola G6 Plus, a $250 phone that you could easily pass off as a $500 phone to the unsuspecting.

Smartphones Sold in 2017: 41.3 million
    Flagship Model: Alcatel 5
Ideal User: Users on a budget who still want high-end specs

Alcatel is French brand owned by Finnish firm Nokia and licensed for cheap by Chinese television manufacturer TCL, but it’s seen success selling phones in developing markets in Latin America. Its strategy is made plain in the Alcatel 5, released in February of 2018, which features a massive screen, facial recognition, and dual-lens front-facing cameras for portrait-mode selfies, and a price point under $200.

Smartphones Sold in 2017: 11 million
    Flagship Phone: Tecno Spark 2
Ideal User: One of Africa’s growing middle class

Trannsion, the holding company of Tecno and a host of other brands, has effectively staked out a dominant position in Africa, where it produces three of the continent’s top-ten-selling phones. It’s also China’s largest exporter of phones, shipping out over 150 million phones in 2017, but that number includes feature phones (ie, flip phones and non-touchscreen phones) that are still popular in Africa, where weeklong battery life and ruggedness remain major selling points. The smartphone market, meanwhile, is still ripe for growth, and the Tecno Spark 2 is the type of phone you’d see on the streets of Lagos or Nairobi, where the continent’s rapidly growing middle class has already transitioned from feature phones to smartphones, and the Spark 2’s price point of $100 hits the sweet spot of features and price.

    Smartphones Sold in 2017: Unknown
    Flagship: OnePlus 6T
Ideal User: Anyone who takes pride in both saving money and their phone’s Geekbench score

If you’re an American, the one manufacturer on this list that you’re most likely to have considered is OnePlus, which gained a ton of interest from the American gadget media by making its first phone, the OnePlus One, invitation only. OnePlus has since established a nice solid position turning out phones that stuff the highest-end specs possible into the lowest-cost phone possible. Consistently well-reviewed by the tech press, if you want to feel superior about how little you paid for your phone while watching someone play with their iPhone or Galaxy on the subway, the OnePlus is for you.

New York City benefit events tend to be stuffy and stiff, but Wednesday night’s dinner honoring Samuel L. Jackson was a true celebration among longtime friends and family. People from all chapters of the actor’s life showed up to support him at the 16th annual MoMA Film Benefitpresented by Chanel and hosted inside the famous modern-art museum. Jackson joins a list of esteemed filmmakers and actors who have previously been honored at the Chanel-sponsored event — which supports the maintenance and growth of MoMA’s Department of Film — including George Clooney, Laura Dern, Martin Scorsese, Julianne Moore, and Tom Hanks.

The actor walked the red carpet with his wife of 44 years, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, alongside his friends and peers, including Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Walton Goggins, Sofia Coppola, Amanda Seyfried, Meghann Fahy, Natasha Lyonne, and Dianna Agron. Reflecting on his prolific 40-year career, Jackson told the Cut: “My goal has always been to entertain; to tell a great story and be a character that people can go home and talk about and laugh about and think about. I like popcorn movies. I’ve tried to do a lot of movies that I would’ve gone to see when I was a kid. I’ve been pretty successful at it.”

Following the red carpet and cocktail hour, guests were escorted up the stairs of the MoMA into a seated dinner. It opened with a video montage showcasing some of Jackson’s best work to date from films like Do the Right Thing (1989), Pulp Fiction (1994), A Time to Kill (1996), Changing Lanes (2002), and Django Unchained (2012). One particularly memorable scene from Pulp Fiction in which Jackson and co-star John Travolta are standing in a doorway, armed and wearing matching black suits, got a few hoots and hollers from the crowd, while a compilation of Jackson’s distinct laugh that’s featured in many of his films earned a big round of applause.

It was a reminder of his legacy; as the video played, whispers about the caliber and sheer quantity of films Jackson has starred in spread throughout the room. In fact, Hollywood executive and MoMA board member Michael Ovitz said in his opening speech that the Film Benefit selection committee had a hard time figuring out how many movies he’s actually been in, because there are simply too many to count.

Next, Richardson Jackson took the stage in a white silk dress from the Chanel cruise 2022 collection to speak about her love and admiration for Jackson.

“We went to a Roberta Flack concert and I’m just telling you, I fell in love with him. I was like, ‘He is so tall and cute. He’s a cheerleader but he’s not gay. I think he has some good weed, and this might work out,’” Richardson Jackson — who admitted she doubted her now-husband’s acting ability when they first met — joked during her speech. “The next thing I know, we were doing a play (together) … and the rest was history. We were joined at the hip.”

Washington, Lee, Goggins, and Tony Award–winning Broadway and film director Kenny Leon also spoke during the dinner, sharing their favorite memories of Jackson over the years, gushing about not just his career but his character. The through-line was that he’s had a profound impact on the lives of each and every one of them — and that saying “motherfucker” at a formal gala is totally acceptable when Jackson (who has notoriously used the word hundreds of times onscreen) is the guest of honor.

“The first time I met you, I felt like I was meeting family. For a minute, I thought I was the only person you made feel that way. But the truth is, you make everyone feel that way,” Goggins said. “There’s a light about you, friend. There’s an energy about you that enters the room a full two minutes before you even walk in to it. You illuminate.” Leon puts it best, calling the Academy Honorary Award winner “the greatest motherfucker to ever do it.”

Jackson, who’s latest film, The Piano Lessonis an adaptation of the 1987 play by August Wilson, ended the night with an acceptance speech that touched on the importance of the MoMA Department of Film and his longtime love of storytelling.

“As we celebrate film tonight, just remember the power it has to change lives and inspire future generations that benefit from MoMA’s acquisition and preservation of films like the ones that ignited the dreams of a little Black kid sitting in a segregated Tennessee movie theater to be standing before you now,” he said. “Let’s continue to tell the stories that matter, stories that move us, and stories that unite us. Thank you all again for this honor. I can’t wait to see what comes next, because I’m going to keep creating.”
