Dr. Mohamed Abd al-Wahab, professor of liver transplantation, confirmed that Egypt has achieved great success in eliminating the virus, but the challenges remain with cirrhosis patients due to their previous infection with the virus, explaining that the treatment of the virus also contributes to the improvement of general indicators, but cases suffering from cirrhosis will need to be followed up and treated for many years.
عبد الوحاب added during his meeting with the media Hamdi Rizk that the new liver transplant center aims to perform between 130 and 140 operations annually, at an average of between 7 and 9 operations per month, which is a big change compared to the old building that was only able to operate two days a week.
We found that the number of patients who entered the agricultural program since the beginning of the year reached 95 patients, of whom about 30 were still looking for a suitable donor, while the agricultural operation was carried out for about 15 patients until now, while some patients died during the preparation period or because there were no donors available.
He pointed out that the success rate of the operations in Egypt ranges between 88% and 91%, which is close to the international rates, even though Egypt relies on live donors, unlike other countries, which rely on maternal donations, which does not give them a better chance if the body rejects the transplanted organ.
عبد الوحاب confirmed that Egypt did not witness any cases of death among living donors during the 1174 liver transplant operation, despite the presence of some natural complications, especially for the role of Egyptian families in supporting patients, where more than 200 women donated liver parts to their wives, while the number of men who donated to their wives was only 15.
He explained that there are effective human situations, in which families enter the operating room together with their children behind them, or sons and daughters compete for donations to their parents, which does not reflect the spirit of sacrifice within the Egyptian society.
