  • ‘I ate at Jeremy Clarkson and James May’s pubs – but which one is better?’

‘I ate at Jeremy Clarkson and James May’s pubs – but which one is better?’

James May’s Royal Oak pub in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside is a hidden gem, but how does it compare to Jeremy Clarkson’s The Farmer’s Dog?

While Jeremy Clarkson’s pub has been hogging the limelight, his former Top Gear co-star James May is quietly running a hidden gem in the heart of Wiltshire.

Chloe Govan of the Express ventured to the quaint village of Swallowcliffe, driving through miles of picturesque countryside adorned with vibrant autumn leaves to find this secluded spot. The pub is just over 12 miles from Salisbury, and within a breezy half-hour drive of Stonehenge, yet it feels like a world away, she said.

The pub and the church are the only two public buildings in the entire village. Chloe said the area was totally silent – until she stepped into the Royal Oak, where the hum of cheerful chatter filled the bustling dining room.

Having previously braved long queues to be among the first to enter The Farmer’s Dog on Jeremy Clarkson’s opening day back in August last year, Chloe said she was now eager to see how James May’s pub would stack up against his former colleague and business competitor.

Chloe said: “I kicked off with a plate full of Padron peppers as an appetizer, which was dry and underwhelming until the zesty lime and gochujang mayonnaise dip kicked in. The Korean chilli flavoring was just one indicator that, while Jeremy has an unwavering commitment to serving exclusively local British produce, James is blending in world foods and flavors for his own venue.

“At midday, it was a bit early to sample one of James’ legendary gins, which boast volumes of between 40% and 57%, so instead, I opted for another way to compare his alcohol offerings to Jeremy’s beer brand. While Jeremy’s sausage and mash main is smothered in gravy flavored by his very own Hawkstone beer, James’ fish and chips main also comes battered in beer.

“In this category, James’ pub could definitely match up to the competition, with the breadcrumb corners of the haddock proving satisfyingly crispy and moreish.

“Hand-cut chips, mushy peas and a generous helping of tartare sauce helped cement it as a great interpretation of a traditional fish and chip dish.”

At £19 at the time of Chloe’s visit, it was £1 pricier than Jeremy’s bangers and mash and the serving size was marginally larger.

There’s only one item on James’ menu that’s considerably more expensive than his celebrity opponent’s – the locally sourced “Chateaubriand of Wiltshire beef”, which arrives with field mushrooms, peppercorn sauce, onion rings, hand-cut chips and a watercress salad.

During Chloe’s visit, the dish cost each customer a whopping £75, so she swerved it. While Jeremy has declared he’s absorbing the additional expense of keeping his food local, even if he makes a loss, James appears to be passing it onto punters’ bills, Chloe said – and succulent Chateaubriand tends to be pricey at the best of times.

However, there’s barely any difference when it comes to pudding – each dish at Jeremy’s pub was £8, while a dark chocolate brownie at James’ place was just 50p more.

She said: “The brownie tasted as good as a grandmother’s handmade secret recipe, while it was accompanied by a whirl of sour cherry ripple ice cream and a crunchy piece of chocolate tuile.

Meanwhile, although the Royal Oak may be as remote and isolated as a British village can get, there are loads of attractions within a short drive.

Salisbury is less than half an hour’s drive away, and its four-star Milford Hall Hotel is a surprisingly plush budget alternative to the few rooms available at the Royal Oak.

There’s an art-deco-themed bar with peacock feather carpets and hand-crafted cocktails, sweet and savory afternoon teas with macarons and strawberry jam-soaked scones and, of course, a restaurant with everything from steaks to seafood.

It’s within walking distance of Salisbury Cathedral, which houses an original well-preserved Magna Carta, and not far from James’ pub.

Stonehenge, the globally renowned 18th-century landscaped gardens at Stourhead – which burst into a riot of color in autumn – and the lakeside Old Wardour Castle, just four miles from The Royal Oak, are all within easy reach.

You could easily enjoy an entire week here, alternating between thrilling attractions, shopping and relaxing in the picturesque countryside.

Summing up her visit, Chloe said: “The Royal Oak can compete with The Farmer’s Dog on price and quality, but while there are arguably more obvious attractions surrounding the former, the latter prides itself on its patriotic homegrown produce, and the Cotswolds have always been iconic. My verdict? Visit them both.”

  • Tom Hanks Reveals He Purposefully Avoided Being On-Screen for a ‘League of Their Own’ Scene He Knew Would Take Days to Film

Tom Hanks Reveals He Purposefully Avoided Being On-Screen for a ‘League of Their Own’ Scene He Knew Would Take Days to Film

Tom Hanks definitely loved starring in “A League of Their Own,” but that doesn’t mean the actor wanted to be in every scene. In fact, he revealed to Seth Meyers on Tuesday night that there was one scene he strategically got himself out of, simply because he knew it would take days to film.

Stopping by “Late Night” in support of his new off-Broadway show “This World of Tomorrow,” Hanks reflected a bit on moments in his career, including “Toy Story” and the beloved baseball film. Hanks called the movie “the greatest gig in the world,” before admitting there was one dugout scene he straight up avoided.

“I read the pages, and I had the very first line in the scene, and I also had the very last line in the scene,” Hanks recalled. “And I knew, if I didn’t get out of that friggin’ dugout, I was going to be shooting that scene for three and a half days, like this.”

From there, Hanks switched his head back and forth as if he were watching a tennis match, noting that he simply would have had to spend days just looking at the other actors in the scene, and each woman had a line. So, he came up with a move on the fly that would allow him to walk away after his first line.

“I said ‘I’m going to give the … uh, lineup to the umpire,’” Hanks recalled. “And then I waited until just before my line at the end, and I walked back into the dugout saying, ‘All right girls, come on, atta baby, atta baby!’ I can’t remember what the line is.”

“But I swear, because of where the sun was, they had to shoot that for hours, in like, three successive afternoons,” Hanks continued. “And you know what I was doing while they were shooting? I was playing Three Flies Up and eating turkey franks, baby! Because I was smart enough to walk out!”

Meyers cracked up at the story, praising Hanks for such “pro actor” thinking, which Hanks readily agreed to.

“That’s what pros do, baby!” Hanks bellowed. “They read the script and say ‘I don’t think I Haven to be in this scene.’”

You can watch Tom Hanks’ full appearance on “Late Night” in the video above.

  • Royal Navy intercepts two Russian ships in the English Channel

Royal Navy intercepts two Russian ships in the English Channel

Two Russian warships were intercepted in the English Channel by the Royal Navy, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) has said.

In the latest incident involving Russia’s ships entering waters around the UK, HMS Severn headed off the RFN Stoikiy, a corvette and Yelnya, a tanker, as they sailed west through the Dover Strait into the English Channel in the past fortnight.

Last week, it emerged that the Russian spy ship Yantar was spotted off the coast of Scotland and it used lasers to disrupt RAF pilots tracking its movements.

Defense Secretary John Healey branded Yantar’s move “deeply dangerous” and warned Russia and its president Vladimir Putin: “We see you. We know what you’re doing. We are ready.”

Healey said last week that there had been a 30% increase in Russian vessels threatening UK waters in the past two years.

The MoD said after intercepting the Stoikiy and the Yelnya, the HMS Severn later handed over monitoring duties to a Nato ally off the coast of Brittany, north west France.

It said the UK ship “continued to observe from a distance and remained ready to respond to any unexpected activity”.

It is not the first time Stoikiy has been in British territory.

In May, the Royal Navy dispatched two vessels and the 814 Naval Air Squadron – also known as the “flying tigers” – to shadow the Russian warship as it sailed west through the English Channel to meet the Sparta IV and General Skobelev.

The two merchant vessels were returning from the Mediterranean and the group headed back to the Baltic Sea, watched by HMS Hurworth.

Healey has said that the rise in Russian activity in UK waters was evidence of increased “Russian aggression right across the board” which he says is impacting Europe, not just Ukraine.

At a news conference in Downing Street last week, the defense secretary said he had changed the Royal Navy’s rules of engagement so that it could follow the Yantar more closely “when it is in our wider waters”.

Built in 2002, HMS Severn is a River-class offshore patrol vessel. Together with her sister ships, HMS Tyne and HMS Mersey, the Royal Navy says the ships are able to “escort passing foreign warships, mount fishing vessel inspections and defend the UK border”.

Matt Czuchry’s Family ‘Manifested’ His Feature in PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive (Exclusive)

    NEED TO KNOW

    • Matt Czuchry tells PEOPLE during his interview for Sexiest Man Alive 2025 that his family previously put his photo on an SMA cover
    • The actor jokes that they “manifested” his feature, which he shared with fellow Gilmore Girls alum Jared Padalecki
    • The pair played two of Rory Gilmore’s memorable boyfriends, Logan and Dean, in the 2000s hit series.

Matt Czuchry’s family always knew what his future held.

The Gilmore Girls alum, 48, was featured in PEOPLE’s 2025 Sexiest Man Alive issue, where he and Jared Padalecki reflected on their breakout roles as Rory Gilmore’s boyfriends in the hit series. The interview brought back a lot of memories for the pair, including one that Czuchry can’t help but share.

“This is a true story,” he notes. “This was a long time ago — it may have been the first season of Gilmore Girls — I came back to Tennessee for Thanksgiving, and all my family was already there, and they had put my picture on the front of a magazine with Sexiest Man Alive written on it. So I have that. And now it’s come true.”

“I think that my family manifested this moment,” he quips.

Czuchry, who starred as Rory’s college love Logan Huntzberger in the classic WB series, also admits he’s “thrilled” to be able to share the experience with Padalecki, 43, who played her first beau, Dean Forester. While the actors only ever had one scene together — Czuchry joined in season 5 while Padalecki was on the show from season 1 — they say they developed a special bond.

“Whenever I think of Jared, I think of Milo Ventimiglia as well, and that connection the three of us have because of our Gilmore Girls storylines,” The Good Wife alum explains (Ventimiglia played another one of Rory’s romantic interests, Jess Mariano, in the show). “That’s always been special for me when I’m thinking about you, that we’ve been in it all together.”

“It started with that scene,” Czuchry continued. “We weren’t in the scene together, so to speak, but we were on set and we’re talking. That friendship has only increased.”

Their three storylines sparked a long-running debate among them Gilmore Girls fans about which man was best for Alexis Bledel’s lead character. Even Padalecki and Czuchry have taken a side.

“I’m team Jess, funny enough,” the Supernatural star reveals. “Just knowing the show and having some idea of where Rory was in her life. They all were flawed, let’s be clear. Well, I’ll say Dean was flawed. They all had their issues, but today I’m team Jess.”

Czuchry adds, “It’s kind of changed for me over the course of time. I think right now, because we had that part on Netflix that went back, and we had that whole aspect too, which was great, it was so much fun — but I think if he changes his life, then I could see Logan coming back and being with Rory. He would be in a completely different place in his life.”
