Gachiakuta Hit With New Censorship Controversy

Censorship is a contentious topic in anime. While the lower scrutiny of manga often allows it to get away with graphic and sexual material, their anime adaptations often have stricter requirements about what is and isn’t allowed. This is especially true for anime that airs on TV in Japan.

This is why it’s no surprise that the current king of Crunchyroll is facing a bit of controversy regarding changes to the source material.

Fans of Gachiakuta‘s manga noticed some discrepancies between episode 20 of the anime and the manga chapter it was adapting. Specifically, Gachiakuta chapter #71 features an iconic and memorable scene where series protagonist Rudo flips off an antagonist who was talking down to him. Episode 20 of the anime, however, depicts the same scene with Rudo giving a thumbs down.

    Gachiakuta’s Censorship Was Probably Inevitable

The difference was noticed by Gachiakuta fans on X, such as @scissoreaperwho lamented “sighhhh we lost”. Which seems to reflect the broad sentiment of manga fans who were disappointed to see the anime water down such an iconic and powerful moment. X user @jackyvstheworld responded to the thread with their take on why the change was made

age rating and time slot censorship so literally yes gachiakuta couldn’t show it the same way they couldn’t show the cockroach eating moment. if the age rating were higher or time slot were better or other factors like if it’s streaming or live then they coulda shown it

While this is just one fan’s explanation for why this iconic Gachiakuta scene was changed, their explanation makes sense. Gachiakuta airs at 8:00 PM on Sundays in Japan, meaning it is entirely possible that children and families would be watching it.

Given this, combined with the often crude nature of Kei Urana’s manga source material, it is unfortunate that this kind of censorship was inevitable.

Why Manga Fans Are So Upset About Gachiakuta’s Latest Bit of Censorship

    Rudo using his Vital Instrument
    Gachiakuta-Trailer-Rudo-Vital-Instrument

Gachiakuta is Crunchyroll’s biggest anime at the moment, and is going toe-to-toe with Solo Leveling season 2 for the title of Crunchyroll’s biggest anime of 2025. Given this, a certain level of scrutiny has fallen on the latest shonen mega-hit.

While fans of the manga have generally been very receptive to Bones’ anime adaptation, it is difficult to deny that certain scenes have been lost in translation.

The scene from chapter #71 is iconic and a perfect symbol of everything that makes Rudo and Gachiakuta work so well. The defiant energy, the rebellion against authority, the raw anger boiling over and exploding out, all of it is what makes Gachiakuta the new standard for anime.

Rudo giving a thumbs down doesn’t have half the anti-authoritarian energy that giving him the middle finger does. Although fans can hope that the scene will be adjusted in a future Blu-ray release, where the creators have a bit more freedom, that may not come for a while and may not be cost-effective to reanimate.

Unfortunately, censorship is quite common in anime, and this probably isn’t the last example fans of Gachiakuta will see.

Gachiakuta May Crunchyroll’s #1 anime at the moment, but its latest censorship controversy is great proof that there is no substitute for Kei Urana’s original punk rock masterpiece.

  • ‘Scariest film ever made’ with perfect Rotten Tomatoes score now streaming for free as it turns 40

‘Scariest film ever made’ with perfect Rotten Tomatoes score now streaming for free as it turns 40

The film is widely considered one of the most disturbing out there with Black Mirror’s creator Charlie Brooker recalling the major impact it had on his work

A film that has left an army of viewers traumatized and even inspired the chilling Netflix series Black Mirror is now available to stream for free on its 40th anniversary.

Released in September 1984, Threads follows two families living in Sheffield, England, as war breaks out between the US and the Soviet Union. A resulting nuclear attack changes life as they know it forever, with the film following the fallout from the attack over the subsequent decade in excruciating detail.

The sci-fi film was broadcast on BBC Four on Wednesday night (October 9) for the first time in more than a decade, becoming the fourth time ever it has been shown on network television. For brave viewers who missed the show and are looking for a harrowing watch, it can now be streamed for free on BBC iPlayer, 40 years on from its initial broadcast.

Despite being produced by the BBC on a low budget of £400,000, the film has been widely praised for its brutal and unflinching depiction of nuclear war. It has a rare perfect score of 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and has multiple accolades behind it; it was up for seven BAFTA nominations in 1985, taking home four of them: Best Single Drama; Best Design; Best Film Cameraman and Best Film Editor.

TikTok is full of videos that brand it the scariest and most disturbing film ever made, with pages of written reviews backing this up.

“This is probably the most effective horror movie I’ve ever seen. I can’t think of another movie that is so brutally honest about its subject matter that it refuses to allow the viewer to do anything other than take this deadly seriously,” shared one viewer.

Another cautioned: “This film is incredibly well made, especially considering it was made quite some time ago. Although I have to say it’s a really impressive film, I’m not sure I’d recommend it unless you want to be depressed for days.”

“It graphically takes you step by step and from start to finish through the most harrowing horror film of what could be real if it ever happened. It’s guaranteed to shock and scare you to your wits end. Not a film to show your kids,” wrote a third viewer. While a fourth added: “A brave and realistic portrayal of a limited nuclear strike on Britain, as a drama documentary, also probably the scariest film ever made.”

Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker watched Threads when he was young and recalled how it raised questions for him about what society can put up with, themes that are explored in his Netflix series. While appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs a few years ago, he said: “I remember watching Threads and not being able to process what it meant; not understanding how society kept going.”

Threads is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer

Linkin Park’s Emily Armstrong shaves fan’s hair live on stage at the festival

Linkin Park’s new lead singer, Emily Armstrong, fulfilled a fan’s wish by shaving their hair live on stage during a performance at Rock for People in Czechia

Linkin Park’s new lead singer, Emily Armstrong, delighted one concert-goer by shaving their hair live on stage during one of the band’s performances. The New Divide stars were in Czechia for their headline set at Rock for People this week when one fan begged them to shave their hair.

In the crowd, the fan held up a sign which read: “Emily, cut my hair!” and halfway through the show, Emily brought him up on stage and produced clippers out of nowhere to fulfill the fan’s wish. Emily, ever the barber, gave him an incredible half-mullet, half-buzzcut and told him: “We gotta leave some at the back for the party, baby!”

The fan, who originally had long locks, seemed delighted by the results as he turned around to thank the singer. After cutting his hair, Emily held up the sign that the fan brought with him.

Last year, when Linkin Park announced Emily as the new singer, the band received a lot of backlash from fans who claimed they were erasing Chester Bennington’s memory.

The Papercut rockers announced their return last summer following a seven-year hiatus after Chester took his own life in 2017, but the musician insisted that the band would not be “rewritten” following heavy criticism of the move to put Emily front and center.

Mike Shinoda said to BBC Radio 1’s New Music Show: “This is intended to be a new chapter of Linkin Park. The old chapter was a great chapter, and we loved that chapter.

“It ran its course and now we were faced with a challenge of: ‘Well, OK, if you start from scratch with another voice, what do you do?’”

Mike explained that he had been writing music with Dead Sara singer Emily since 2019 and that they never planned to “start the band up again”.

At the end of this month, Linkin Park will be performing at Wembley Stadium. The group will be supported by two incredible acts, the first of which is Spiritbox.

The Courtney LaPlante-fronted metalcore outfit will be hitting Wembley Stadium for the first time in their career for this night of entertainment.

Secondly, JPEGMAFIA will be supporting Linkin Park. The American rapper is a New York local who will no doubt fit right into Linkin Park’s repertoire.

After London, the band is heading to Germany, Belgium, Poland and France before heading back to the US for dates in New York, Illinois, Tennessee and more.

  • Mum gives her baby name so unique she ‘can’t spell it correctly’

Mum gives her baby name so unique she ‘can’t spell it correctly’

A mum has chosen a name for her son that is so unique that she isn’t quite sure how to spell it – as employees at her child’s nursery have seen her use two different spellings

Careful consideration needs to go into choosing a baby name.

One of the first decisions many parents make when they choose a baby name is whether they want to go for a classic and popular name or if they want to push the boat out with something unique. Once you’ve chosen your desired name, you have to think about how to spell it – as sometimes even the most common names come with spelling variations, such as picking between Alan and Allen or Jane and Jayne.

But one mum has seemingly picked a name so unique for her child that even she struggles to remember how it should be spelled. The name was shared on Reddit by a woman who works in a nursery in Germany where the little boy is enrolled. She claimed she’s seen the mum use two different spellings for her son’s name.

Warning: Below post may contain offensive language

In her post, the woman explained that Kilian has become “fairly popular” among new parents recently, and her nursery already has two Kilians among 70 students. So when another student enrolled with the same name, the woman thought nothing of it – until she saw it was spelled Keylan.

She wrote: “When they filled out our documents, I saw that they spelled it Keylan. They seemed to notice me being confused as the father quickly claimed it was ‘the French way to spell it’. (I Googled it later – it’s not.) As time went on, we got used to the spelling and just pronounced it the same way the parents do.”

However, when the nursery ran an event for the children in which they needed to bring family photographs into school, the woman noticed one big problem – some of the child’s photos had “Keylan” written on the back, while others had a different spelling, “Kelyan”.

She added: “Then came a day when the parents should bring family pics, and I was completely shocked when I turned one of them over and saw that his mom wrote ‘Kelyan’ on the back, thinking we had spelled the name wrong the whole time. Turned another one over, ‘Keylan’. It turns out that half the time, she uses Keylan; the other half, Kelyan. His official name is Keylan.

“Part of me feels sorry for the parents because I’m not sure if they knew the correct spelling, but I’m mostly annoyed at them because they are in their late 20s, and I’m sure as hell they know how to use Google.”

The woman said she isn’t sure if the mum is dyslexic and has difficulty with spelling, but said she still believes the mum should have gone with the standard spelling of her son’s name if that was the case, as it would avoid confusion for other people who would be able to consistently spell it correctly.

Commenters were quick to share their own similar stories, with one person saying their mum still spells her name wrong – and she’s 52. One person said: “I knew a Shania (Sh-Nye-uh) spelled Shaina (Shay-na). Drives me crazy.”

  • Covid Stratus warning symptoms as a sign of infection includes subtle changes in your throat

Covid Stratus warning symptoms as a sign of infection includes subtle changes in your throat

A new strain of Covid has been circulating in the UK this autumn, with genetic changes and mutations meaning the virus comes with some new symptoms that might go unnoticed

If you feel unwell with a razor-sharp throat and high temperatures, you may have caught one of the new strains of Covid that’s been circulating in the UK this autumn. Its been five years since the initial outbreak of Covid-19, and since then several different variants have come from it.

XFG, called Stratus by some, and NB.1.8.1, known as Nimbus, are now the most common variants being passed around in the UK, according to officials. Experts say these do not appear to pose any bigger threat than previous types of Covid or make people feel more ill.

But recent genetic changes the virus has acquired may make infections more likely, and comes with slightly different symptoms. Dr Kaywaan Khan, Harley Street GP and Founder of Hannah London Clinic, tells The Mirror: “You can still get some of the same features as with the common cold, like a cough or runny nose, but we are seeing a lot more hoarseness of voice.

READ MORE: Covid symptom men don’t even get Stratus variant spreadsREAD MORE: NHS issues ‘important’ Covid advice as Stratus and Nimbus cases rise

“It’s not a defining feature, you can experience this with the common cold too but with Covid, you can get a bit of laryngitis and this hoarse voice.”

This is somewhat different to symptoms from other strains. Dr Khan added:You can get a razor sharp sore throat, but also loss of taste. It’s probably less common than the first strains but that can indicate Covid.”

It is usual for viruses to evolve as they spread between people over time. When the changes become significantly different, the new virus types are known as variants.

Covid can still cause a wide range of symptoms, including headache, coughing, a blocked or running nose and exhaustion, making it difficult to distinguish from a cold or flu.

If you think you have Covid you should avoid contact with vulnerable people and stay at home if possible.

If you have symptoms and need to leave the house, the advice remains that you should wear a face covering. Washing hands regularly and using and disposing tissues in bins can reduce the spread of this and other respiratory illnesses.

Dr. Khan also recommends early testing for those who are more vulnerable or are immunocompromised.

He says:With Covid, you can get antivirals, but this will only be beneficial if you get tested really early. If you are immunocompromised, or have another condition, testing can provide information to your GP and they can consider antiviral medication.”

People over 75 can get a free vaccine against Covid on the NHS. This can offer good protection, even against the new variants, says the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

It is urging people to book their vaccinations against flu and another common winter virus called RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) as cases start to increase ahead of winter.

“It’s normal for viruses to mutate and change, and as more data becomes available on these variants, we’ll have a better understanding of how they interact with our immune systems and how to optimize our protection, as well as actions we can take to keep the most vulnerable safe and live our lives as normally as possible,” says the UKHSA.

“The most important thing is for those eligible to get their vaccination when it is due.”

  • ‘My husband’s having an affair with a woman 20 years older than me’

‘My husband’s having an affair with a woman 20 years older than me’

Coleen Nolan has advice for a reader whose hubby has cheated, but after they’d been trying for a baby she’s angry his affair was with someone too old to have one

    Dear Coleen

A few weeks ago, I found out my husband was having an affair. I’m 36, he’s 42, and the woman he’s been seeing is 56.

We’ve been married for nearly three years, although we’ve known each other for years before that. I discovered the affair when I started tracking his phone and then I took a phone call from a hotel, saying his “wife” had left her glasses in the room. Obviously, not mine, but the other woman’s.

He didn’t admit the affair at first, but then it all came out. She’s someone he met through his job and she’s divorced with grown-up kids.

    Author avatarColeen Nolan

What broke my heart more than anything is that we both wanted kids, and we’d been trying for a baby and talking about it a lot, and now he’s running off with someone who’s too old to have them.

He’s destroyed everything we’ve built. It’s humiliating that he left me for a woman 20 years older, I feel embarrassed and angry. All I can think about is getting revenge, which I know isn’t healthy.

He moved his stuff out of our house last weekend, while I was staying with my sister, and I haven’t spoken to him since.

    Author avatarColeen Nolan

There’s been no talk of reconciliation or counseling. I think he’s relieved it’s out in the open and is happy with his choice, and I wouldn’t have him back anyway. How can I move on from this mess?

    Coleen says

Affairs are almost always a symptom of something wrong in the relationship and maybe your husband was looking for a way out. Maybe it was the pressure of having a baby or something else but, whatever his reasons, he’s betrayed you and he’s gone.

I understand everything you’re feeling, but there’s no reason to feel embarrassed. That’s for him to feel. This is all on him.

As far as revenge goes, the best form of revenge is to get happy, even if you have to fake it at first. Offload to friends and scream into pillows at home, but don’t feed his ego by showing him you’re upset or pining for him.

He’s shown you who he is, now you can move on to better things. It doesn’t feel like it right now, but you’re still very young and have so much ahead of you, so focus on the future. I don’t think it would have been less upsetting and humiliating if he’d run off with someone 10 years younger because he might have had children with her, and that would have been a double kick in the guts.

    Author avatarColeen Nolan

Anger doesn’t go away overnight, but counseling helped me when both my marriages ended. I remember the very first time I went, I cried for the whole session, but I still felt so much better when I left.

You’ll go home and think about what’s coming up and gradually you’ll see the light at the end of the tunnel, but you have to give it time. You can’t change this situation, so focus on doing all you can to feel good about yourself again. Good luck.

  • Child Benefit shake-up for thousands of parents as HMRC introduces new system

Child Benefit shake-up for thousands of parents as HMRC introduces new system

You are awarded Child Benefit if you are responsible for looking after a child – but if you, or your partner, are on a high income, then you may have to pay back some of this benefit back

Thousands of families who claim Child Benefit will be able to pay the high income tax charge through their tax code for the first time.

Child Benefit is worth £26.05 a week for your first child, then £17.25 for any additional child. You are awarded Child Benefit if you are responsible for looking after a child – but if you, or your partner, are on a high income, then you may have to pay back some of this benefit back.

If either of you earn over £60,000, you have to pay back 1% of your Child Benefit for every £200 you earn over £60,000. This is known as the High Income Child Benefit Charge.

Once you earn over £80,000, you pay back 100% of your Child Benefit. You normally have to pay the high income charge through self-assessment – but now, there is the option to pay it through your PAYE tax code.

This means HMRC will change your tax code and the charge will be taken from your pay. You can use this service if you’re employed and don’t need to file a self-assessment return for any other reason.

You have until January 31, 2026 to opt in for the latest 2024/25 tax year, which ended on April 5, 2025. You can still pay the high income charge through self-assessment if you want to.

If you normally have to file a self-assessment anyway, then you won’t be able to use the new PAYE option. If you’re a high income household, you can make a claim for Child Benefit without getting the payments.

This would mean you still get National Insurance credits which count towards your state pension, but you wouldn’t need to pay the charge.

Child Benefit is claimed by more than seven million families. You can claim it if you are responsible for a child under the age of 16, or if they are under the age of 20 and still in approved education or training.

This can include A-Levels, NVQs or even home education, but it does not include university or BTEC qualifications. The child normally has to live with you, or you pay at least the same amount as Child Benefit towards looking after them, in order for you to claim the payments.

You can claim Child Benefit if you fostered a child, as long as the local council is not paying anything towards their accommodation or maintenance, if you adopted your child.

You may also be entitled if you’re looking for a child for a friend or relative. There is no limit for how many children you can claim Child Benefit for, but if two people look after a child, only one person can claim Child Benefit.

Dan Tomlinson, Exchequer Secretary, said: “We’re modernizing HMRC to make tax simpler. Tens of thousands of parents will no longer have to go through the extra effort of filing a tax return as this new simple and straightforward system takes the stress out of paying the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBIC).

He added: “If they sign-up they will then be issued with a new tax code which will reflect their HICBC deduction. Any fluctuations in income and Child Benefit entitlement will be reflected in-year in their tax code.”
