Thing that ‘often goes unnoticed’ could land drivers with a £2,500 fine

It’s a really simple part of your car, but not looking after it could have a devastating outcome

If you own a car, there’s lots to keep on top of. Doing so is crucial for both your own safety and that of others on the road.

Most of us know that it’s crucial to have our cars put through an MOT every year, as well as regular servicing and maintenance. But sometimes the more basic things can be let slip.

Some of these basics also happen to be the most crucial. Take windshield wipers for example – a metal arm with a bit of rubber attached to it, essentially, but one of the most important parts of your car when it comes to safety.

But not looking after them properly could lead to a dangerous situation. It also sets up the prospect of a fine as big as £2,500 and points on your driving license.

A spokesperson from experts Engine Match said: “The significance of having functional windscreen wipers often goes unnoticed, but it is crucial for safety. A dirty windscreen not only proves irritating and distracting, but can compromise visibility, posing a potential risk during drives.

“Inadequate wiper performance can lead to MOT failure, resulting in immediate costs and potential long-term expenses. Ensuring wipers are road-safe is imperative to avoid fines of up to £2,500, and the addition of three penalty points to your driving record, as compromised visibility due to faulty or inefficient wipers poses a significant safety risk, potentially leading to dangerous driving scenarios.

“Detecting streaky marks after using wipers is a visible sign of wear, indicating the need for replacement. By inspecting the rubber underneath for cracks or splitting, drivers can address these issues promptly, avoiding potential fines and ensuring clear visibility.

“Ageing wipers can miss parts of the windscreen during cleaning, particularly in warm weather when the material softens. Experts recommend changing older wipers for new ones, with the general guideline of replacing them every six months to a year for optimal performance.

“Squeaking noises while operating wipers can be indicative of underlying issues, potentially leading to impaired functionality. Drivers should listen for these unusual sounds as part of routine checks to ensure wipers are working properly and avoid fines for inadequate performance.

“Winter poses additional challenges, with heavy rain, ice, and snow capable of severely damaging windscreens. Experts advise investing in wiper blades designed to handle harsh and cold weather conditions, reinforcing the importance of proactive maintenance for winter driving safety.

“Regularly checking the windscreen wipers for signs of damage, including cracks or breaks in the rubber, is a fundamental practice. This proactive approach ensures that drivers are promptly aware of potential issues, allowing them to address concerns and maintain a clear, safe driving environment.

“Selecting the right wiper blades for your car is essential for optimal performance. Doing thorough research or consulting experts about suitable blades for your vehicle’s make and model ensures they fit and work efficiently, contributing to effective windshield maintenance.”
