A cleaning hack has been shared to help get your kitchen worktops “extra shiny”, and you only need one product to banish stains and remove pesky tea and coffee marks
When it comes to sprucing up the kitchen, it can be one of the most challenging rooms to tackle, as burnt food can cause problems in all sorts of places. Worktops, dishes and appliances get smothered with grease, water and grime, which means we’re always on the hunt for clever hacks to make them sparkle.
But, when it comes to kitchen worktops, it seems all you need is one simple product to make them absolutely spotless. Cleaning whizz, Tanya, has revealed a straightforward method to give your countertops an “extra shine”, using just one product that’s probably already in your cupboard. Known as tanya_cleanhome on TikTok, she shared how you can achieve brilliant results by following a few easy steps.
First off, if you’re looking to banish stains like coffee and tea, you’ll need to pre-treat them. She concocts a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, washing-up liquid and water, blending the ingredients together, and then she applies it to the stained areas and lets the mixture soak in to lift the stains.
When it comes to cleaning, Tanya uses washing-up liquid and water, but she doesn’t go overboard with the amount of soap she adds. She uses this mixture to wipe and scrub down her worktops.
Once that’s done, she then grabs a microfiber cloth to dry the surfaces. She emphasized the importance of ensuring all the soap is removed, and she finishes off the job by using a glass cleaning cloth too.
After she’s finished, her countertops look absolutely spotless. You can also see there’s a lovely shine to them too, which inspired viewers to give it a go.
One person remarked: “Wow. Ok, I need to try this.” Others questioned whether the method works on every type of worktop, or if certain surfaces should be avoided.
For anyone wondering the same thing, baking soda is not suitable for all countertops as its slightly abrasive nature can scratch natural stone surfaces such as granite and marble. Its alkaline properties can also potentially damage certain wood finishes.
Generally, it’s deemed safe for more durable surfaces such as laminate, stainless steel and ceramic, but should be applied sparingly and with care. This guidance should be followed if you’re considering giving the method a go.
That said, there are several compelling reasons to try this cleaning approach if your surface allows. It can perform remarkably well at lifting certain stains.
How does baking soda work to lift stains?
What you might not realize is that baking soda tackles stains through multiple mechanisms. It functions through its gentle abrasive quality, its alkaline composition that counteracts acidic marks and its absorbent characteristics that help draw out stains.
It can decompose the acidic elements found in numerous stains, including those from wine, coffee or tomato sauce. It can serve as a soft scouring agent to remove dirt, or you can combine it with water to create a paste that extracts stains as it sets.
If you’re keen to use the product for stain removal, all you need to do is create a paste with water and let it sit for a bit before wiping it clean. For more stubborn stains, simply cover the paste with cling film and leave it overnight before rinsing.
However, before you dive in, it’s crucial to test the solution on a hidden area first to ensure the paste doesn’t harm the surface. Ideally, let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes before gently wiping it away to see the best results.
This type is definitely worth noting, with the product costing as little as 65p. This makes it an incredibly cost-effective way to eliminate stains around the house.
