Alan Tudyk has revealed what he misses the most about his canceled sci-fi comedy series, Resident Alien. The series follows Tudyk as an alien taking the form of Harry Vanderspeigle, a medical examiner in the small town of Patience, Colorado. Resident Alien ended with season 4 after the series was canceled by Syfy and USA, but offered a definitive conclusion.
Speaking with Joe Deckelmeier for ScreenRant at Motor City Comic Con’s Firefly panel, Tudyk revealed what he misses the most about Resident Alien was able to portray Harry. The actor reminisced about reworking a scene with co-star Sara Tomko, using physical comedy as a gag that was left in the episode. He misses not being able to portray him anymore:
ScreenRant: Now that Resident Alien has come to an end, is there anything of Harry’s that you really miss getting to play?
Alan Tudyk: I think, when it was in the last season, I realized that I was going to really miss Harry.
It was a scene with Sara Tomko, who comes in and is like, “All my dreams are coming true. Am I psychic?” And my line was, “I think you just have residual alien blood in your system. It’ll pass in time.” And I was like, “Why do I just know that? I feel like I should see.”
So, I said, “Sara, just go with this.” We did the rehearsal, and she goes, “Am I psychic?” I said, “Sit down. Uh oh, let me see…” I stuck one finger in her nose and one finger in her ear. And I was like, “Yeah, that’s gonna be some residual alien blood. Let me look in your eyes. God, why is this one bigger than the other one?” And that’s in the scene!
Yeah, we lost half a day because Sara locked herself in her trailer out of justified anger. (Laughs) But anyway, I just missed that.
Throughout the series, the other characters in Resident Alien end up becoming friends with Harry. While the extraterrestrial initially arrived on Earth to destroy it, making friends with people like Asta (Tomko), D’arcy (Alice Wetterlund), and Max (Judah Prehn) made him the planet’s protector. However, his quirky nature and lack of etiquette never subsided, a defining part of his character.
Harry’s lack of understanding about the human world and its intricacies makes him the comedic anchor for the show. As Tudyk’s comment indicates, he had fun playing up this aspect of him, even if it meant improvising scenes without telling his co-stars first. This important element of his character translates to his approach to almost every situation he winds up in.
Resident Alien season 4 brought his character full circle, with the show wrapping up all its major plotlines while giving Harry the sendoff he deserved. While the series wasn’t planned to end with season 4, it was filmed in such a way that its cancellation didn’t affect its story. Despite critical praise, the show did not draw in the necessary viewership.
As of writing, there are no plans for the sci-fi series to return. However, creator Chris Sheridan has previously teased the idea of a Resident Alien movie or limited series follow-up, although nothing concrete has gone into motion as of writing. But it does signal there’s still plenty of stories for Harry left to tell if given the chance.
Tudyk’s passion for his Resident Alien role is clear onscreen, making it one of his most memorable roles. While Harry’s story may be over, its conclusive series finale makes it all the better to watch, knowing it ends on a definitive note. While future adventures are possible, the series offered a memorable story neither the audience nor the actor will forget.
