Wicked: For Good could be just days away from its first major box office record. The upcoming Wicked: For Goodwhich debuts on November 21, adapts the second act of the original Broadway musical, following the strained friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda the Good Witch (Ariana Grande).
for Variety, Wicked: For Good is currently projected to earn a 3-day debut total between $150 and $180 million during its opening weekend at the domestic box office. If it hits the upper bound of that range, it will surpass A Minecraft Movie ($162 million) and the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch ($146 million) to earn the best domestic debut of 2025 so far.
Even if it hits the lower bound of its projected debut range, Wicked: For Good is expected to far surpass the opening weekend of 2024’s Wickedwhich had a domestic debut of $112.5 million before going on to earn $758.8 million worldwide.
If it follows the same trajectory as its predecessor, these debut projections could mean that Wicked: For Good could eventually become a billion-dollar movielanding in a range between $1.012 billion and $1.214 billion. This would make it only the third billion-dollar title of the year, behind Lilo & Stitch ($1.038 billion) and the Chinese smash In Zha 2 ($1.902 billion).
So far, one factor working against the new movie is the fact that Wicked: For Good reviews have been more mixed, earning the sequel a 71% Rotten Tomatoes score that is officially Fresh, but nevertheless can’t compare to the original movie’s Certified Fresh 88%.
However, if it performs well during awards season, potentially besting the first movie’s 10 Oscar nominations and two wins, this could boost its commercial prospects even more. This is possible thanks to the fact that there are two original songs on it Wicked: For Good soundtrack, which open it up to being nominated for multiple Oscars in the Best Original Song categoryfor which the first movie was not eligible.
Regardless of its worldwide performance by the end of its theatrical run, the opening weekend projections for Wicked: For Good are already incredibly promising. Even at the lower end, the movie’s domestic debut will make back its reported $150 million budget and see it well on its way towards hitting its estimated break-even point, which is likely somewhere around $375 million.
