Task Season 2 Officially Renewed By HBO

Task season 2 has officially been confirmed by HBO, the crime thriller series set to return after a record-breaking, critically acclaimed season 1. Originally billed as a miniseries, the show follows the cat-and-mouse game between FBI agent Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) and professional robber Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey). Task season 1 reviews scored it a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, HBO has confirmed that Task has been renewed for season 2. Confirmed by CEO Casey Bloys, the upcoming season of the show will be headed by series creator Brad Ingelsby. While no full details nor returning cast members were revealed, Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming and Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, spoke to the series’ renewal:

We knew well in advance of its launch that we had a powerful drama series on our hands, but it has been so rewarding to witness the audience’s fervor and embrace of this show as it grew week after week. Rarely does a writer balance humanistic storytelling with intricate, explosive plotting, but Brad Ingelsby is one of our industry’s greats and we have no doubt he will strike as profoundly and addictively once again in season two.

In addition, Ingelsby confirmed his return to the series in his own statement. The writer, showrunner, and executive producer thanked HBO for their belief and support Taskwhich has since become one of the Top 3 fastest-growing first seasons in HBO history. The creator expressed excitement for season 2 and the story yet to be told:

We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have HBO’s unwavering support of TASK from the very first script onwards, throughout production, and during their extraordinary launch of our first season to audiences. They are an unmatched creative home. On behalf of the entire TASK team, in front of and behind the camera, I am honored and excited to get back to work on a second season of our show.

Task is the second show from Ingelsby to become a critical success for HBO. His first show for the network was the miniseries Mare of Eastown in 2021, starring Kate Winslet. The show received 16 Emmy nominations, including four wins. It currently holds a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, this is the first time one of Ingelsby’s miniseries has been renewed.

It’s unclear what the miniseries’ renewal means for the show’s story moving forward. Task season 1 ended with a definitive conclusion to Tom and Robbie’s conflict. While HBO has not officially confirmed any cast member returns in their statements, Ruffalo’s character may be the only one whose story could continue in a direct follow-up to season 1.

The show’s renewal also extends Ingelsby’s work with HBO beyond their three-year deal, which he signed in 2021. Although there’s been no confirmation as to when season 2 will arrive, the creative process for a follow-up will likely demand time. Task season 1 began development in June 2023 before its September 2025 release, indicating the wait won’t be short.

Even so, the critical reception to Task coupled with its performance for HBO makes its renewal fitting. The series’ reception also makes it a prime favorite for awards season, although no nominations have been announced as of writing. For now, season 2 is poised to make another mark on HBO, with more information arriving later during its development cycle.
