House Of The Dragon Season 4 Officially Confirmed With Release Window As GOT Series Plans May Be Changing

Over half a year before the third season debuts, HBO has already officially renewed House of the Dragon for season 4. The record-breaking Game of Thrones prequel follows members of House Targaryen during the devastating Dance of the Dragons, the realm-changing civil war that culminates in the near-destruction of the Targaryens and their dragons.

Not only has the epic series been renewed for another highly anticipated outing, but HBO has also confirmed that House of the Dragon season 4 will premiere in 2028. The news comes alongside the surprise reveal that Game of Thrones‘ other upcoming prequel show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdomshas been renewed for season 2 ahead of its series premiere on January 18, 2026.

Meanwhile, HBO also announced that House of the Dragon season 3 will officially debut in summer 2026. However, there’s still no official month or date slated for its arrival. With season 4 coming in 2028, House of the Dragon confirms an extension of its release schedule tradition, with each season so far debuting two years after its predecessor.

While House of the Dragon season 3 will have eight total episodes, HBO did not confirm how many episodes there will be in season 4. Season 3’s episode count matches that of season 2, although both are a decrease from season 1’s allocated 10 episodes.

Interestingly, HBO’s announcement of House of the Dragon season 4’s renewal did not include any information regarding it being the final installmentdespite previous reports that the series was planning to end with a fourth outing. While unconfirmed, the lack of a series-ending label means it’s possible that HBO intends to extend House of the Dragon beyond season 4 for more episodes.

Originally, Fire & Blood author George RR Martin stated that House of the Dragon would require four full seasons of 10 episodes each to “do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish.” While House of the Dragon now officially has its four seasons, the fact that seasons 2 and 3 only contain eight episodes each means Martin’s suggested plan still hasn’t been met. Nor such, it’s possible House of the Dragon season 5 could be on the horizon in order to fulfill the entire Dance of the Dragons story and its immediate aftermath.

At the end of House of the Dragon season 2, both sides of the war were officially gearing up for large-scale battles to come. The Greens, led in battle by Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), are marching to Harrenhal, where Daemon (Matt Smith) has amassed an army in the Riverlands pledging their allegiance to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy).

Simultaneously, Team Black is preparing for the Velaryon blockade in the Gullet with new dragonriders secured via the Targaryen bastards known as the dragonseeds. All the while, the Greens have secured the Triarchy’s fleet for King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) as House Stark’s army marches south for Rhaenyra.

With season 2 leaving off at a point where the tension is at its highest, House of the Dragon season 3 is set to begin with full force as the series launches into some of the most devastating battles in franchise history. Nor always in the world of Game of Thronesnumerous gory deaths and shocking betrayals can be expected in coming episodes, with season 3 setting the stakes even higher for the now-confirmed season 4 chapter of the Dance of the Dragons.
