Cooper Koch portrays Erik Menendez in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Monsters, but before he landed the role he took on an even more harrowing job
A Netflix drama based on the chilling real-life case of two brothers who killed their parents in the eighties has taken the streaming giant by storm, with fans clamoring to learn all they can about the real events that unfolded.
The Ryan Murphy series, titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, has brought new attention to the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez who were convicted of murdering their parents at their Beverly Hills mansion in 1989.
The dramatization stars Cooper Koch as Erik and Nicholas Chavez as Lyle, with Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny portraying their ill-fated parents Jose and Kitty Menendez. It is a follow-up to the streamer’s previous hit, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Storywhich starred Evan Peters in the role of the infamous serial killer. A third series has already been green lit which will focus on Ed Gein, a killer and grave-robber active in the 1950s.
Koch’s performance as Erik has been widely praised by viewers, particularly in the series’ fifth episode The Hurt Man, in which his character finally opens up about the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. The gut-wrenching scene was filmed in one continuous shot, with a script that spanned 34 pages.
Fans of the actor are now discovering his little-known role in a harrowing horror film that has been described as a “traumatizing” watch by viewers.
Koch starred as Benjamin in the horror/thriller Swallowed, which was released in the UK in 2023. The film, directed by Carter Smith, follows two friends who indulge in one last night of partying before they part ways. Benjamin (Koch) is set to leave his pal Dom (Jose Colon) behind in Maine in order to pursue a career in the porn industry in LA.
Their night of celebration takes a turn after the pair take on a last-minute drug smuggling job. They swallow parcels which they think contain drugs, but it soon emerges the contents are not quite what they had assumed. According to the film’s synopsis, the pair “must fight to survive a night of drugs, bugs and horrific chaos.”
Swallowed sits at an 82 per cent critics rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score coming in slightly lower at 73 per cent. One reviewer called Cooper Koch “the best part of Swallowed”, while another branded it “a lean and mean horror film with a(n) LGBTQ twist and solid performances and taut direction.”

Another warned the film was not for the faint of heart, writing: “The body horror in Swallowed is a different kind of disturbing, because, well, you have to get the drugs out of Dom somehow. It’s not for the squeamish.”
Meanwhile Los Angeles Times critic Noel Murray hailed the “memorably intense experience”, adding that it had “sharp points to make about how the lives of outsiders and outlaws can tip in an instant into sloppy chaos.”
