A recent study revealed that the probability of recurrence of breast cancer for those recovering from the disease at an early age is relatively low, as it increases by a rate ranging from 2% to 3% only compared to women who have not previously been diagnosed with the disease.
The results of this study published by the British Medical Journal, specialized in medical research, may help many of the patients who think that the chances of contracting the disease are again higher than those of other women. Scientists confirm that although the risk of recurrence of cancer remains high, the percentage varies from study to study, as the probability of recurrence of the disease depends on other factors such as the quality of treatment and social and health lifestyles as well as genetic factors.
The researchers used data from the National Cancer Registry in England, and the results were based on 476,000 and 373 breast cancer patients during the period from 1993 to 2016 in the age group between 20 and 75 years. During the follow-up period, 64,000 and 747 women were diagnosed with the same type of cancer again, but the study confirmed that this rate is not significantly higher compared to those who did not get the disease.
During the twenty years, 6-13% of the convalescents were diagnosed with other types of cancer other than breast cancer (including breast, lung, and bowel cancer), an increase of 1-2% compared to those who did not get cancer, and 6-5% of the convalescents were diagnosed with breast cancer again, an increase of 1-3% compared to those who did not develop the disease before.
And for women who contracted the disease at the age of forty, the probability of developing cancer again at the age of seven reached 6% compared to 2% to 4% for those who did not suffer from the disease.
In a statement to the “Medical Express” website, which specializes in medical research, the study team says that up to 7% of cases of breast cancer recurrence may be due to auxiliary treatment methods after the first treatment, such as surgery, but they nevertheless emphasize the importance of these auxiliary treatment methods in almost all disease cases when doctors advise to resort to them.
