The DC Universe has finished its run for 2025, following the successful Superman movie with David Corenswet, and the conclusion to Peacemaker season 2. With several upcoming DCU movies in 2026, there is also one of the most highly anticipated series for James Gunn’s franchise that is coming up.
The Green Lanterns Podcast recently uncovered in one of The Hollywood Reporter’s newsletters from October that the next release for the DCU would be the Supergirl movie rather than HBO’s Lanterns TV show. The podcast reached out to the trade for clarification if this was meant to imply that the series would come out after the film.
The host received a reply back from THRwho responded with, “You are quite the eagle-eyed reader. Yes, we expect Lanterns will now come after Supergirl.” The HBO drama officially wrapped production on the first season in October, according to Aaron Pierre in an interview with Eqsuireon October 21, 2025.
Pierre is set to bring the famous John Stewart to life as one of the many Emerald Knights in the DCU, while Kyle Chandler will star as Hal Jordan. Superman star Nathan Fillion will also reprise the role of Guy Gardner in Lanterns season 1.
Originally, it had been stated that the Lanterns TV show would come out in early 2026. During a big DCU press event in February 2025, which ScreenRant was in attendance for, Gunn and Peter Safran shared the update before filming had started.
Gunn shared with IGN on November 18, 2024, that the line-up was, “It’s really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker, Lanterns, Supergirl. And then some things people don’t know.” He had also added that “We’ll see when it comes out, but they’re around the same time,” when asked if lanterns release would be before the Supergirl film.
At the time of this story’s publication, Warner Bros. TV, HBO, and DC Studios have not commented on the latest release reports surrounding the DCU TV series. Gunn had a brief update on the HBO show on October 21, 2025, when discussing the Lanterns trailer.
While having seen the preview for it, the DC Studios co-CEO added, “But I have no clue…when that’s planned to be shown. With HBO, the marketing is so different than film.” For the time being, HBO has not formally revealed an exact premiere date for Lanterns.
