It is meant to be the ‘perfect pick-me-up treat’
A few months ago, Tesco introduced a Birthday Cake Sandwich to mark 30 years of Clubcard, causing more people than ever to rush to the meal deal section. It received great reviews, but many TikTok users had the same gripe – it wasn’t actually a cake.
Instead, Tesco opted for brioche-style bread to add a sweet touch to it its birthday cake-inspired treat. This is where Aldi spotted a chance to set its own version apart—it didn’t even consider bread for its sandwich; instead, it was just pure cake.
I spotted the boxes of ‘sandwiches’ neatly displayed in my local Aldi’s bakery aisle, priced at £1.99. They come in a pack of two ‘slices’, each filled with a vanilla sponge, pink vanilla frosting and rainbow sprinkles
Once home, I was excited to try the budget supermarket’s version. I’m usually a big fan of Aldi products, so I had great expectations for this treat, which I wrote about for the Daily Record.
After arranging everything on the plate and making myself a fresh cup of coffee, I was happily surprised by how much I enjoyed this treat. At first sight, it appears to be far more filling than your typical meal deal sandwich, with the ratio of cake to filling making the first bites a bit tricky.
Instead of tucking into it like a traditional sandwich, I went back to the kitchen for a fork for some bites that were much easier to swallow. It was undeniably sweet – but that’s to be expected from something with 25g of sugar, and the straightforward, crowd-pleasing flavors hit the spot.
I ripped off a piece of the cake that didn’t have any filling, and my suspicions were true. The cake itself held onto its moisture and taste, unlike some baked goods that can become as dry as the Sahara sand without a bit of help from something sweet and sticky.
When Aldi put forward its plans to rival other UK supermarkets with a sandwich cake, it vowed to deliver the “perfect pick-me-up treat” that was “simple yet delicious”. I can confidently say that this cake has done exactly that, and my suspicions that it was going to be a tasty treat were right.
In other Aldi news, the supermarket is preparing for December and has revealed its long-awaited Christmas range. As part of its festive collection, customers can take a look through the brochure available both online and in Aldi branches.
TikTok users have liked the experience to ‘circling items in the Argos catalogue’ when choosing products for their winter parties. The 62-page leaflet showcases Christmas dinner essentials, appetizing party food, beverages and decorations.
