Dragon Ball’s First Store Showcases Super Saiyan Goku’s Most Controversial Design

On November 14, Dragon Ball launched its first store called DRAGON BALL STORE TOKYO. While the store featured official merchandise and a special lineup of novelty items for purchase, what caught fans’ eyes was a special footage shown at the store.

During its opening, DRAGON BALL STORE TOKYO played a special footage on a vertical monitor. The video showcased different events that took place Dragon Ball. However, unlike the original clips that were 2D drawn, the new footage showcased CG animation.

As part of it, the footage debuted Super Saiyan Goku in CG animation for the first time. While the footage itself looked cool, the same has also been labeled the iconic transformation’s most controversial design in over three decades.

While Dragon Ball has made use of 2D-drawn animation for over three decades, the franchise’s latest film, Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroeswas entirely CG animated. Even anime fans might know, the majority of the fanbase frowns upon the use of CG in anime. However, unlike any other project seen before, Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes was received well by the fans.

So, why is the Super Saiyan Goku’s CG animation a controversial design for fans? The thing is, while fans liked Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroesmany viewed it as a one-time experimental project. As such, they hoped that future Dragon Ball projects would stay 2D. However, with the new CG footage of Super Saiyan Goku, and others Dragon Ball events, fans fear that Toei Animation may be eyeing CG animation for future projects as well.

Although it is tough to say whether that will be a good decision, it is understandable why fans would hate a CG render of Super Saiyan Goku. The iconic transformation dropped on TV over three decades ago. This transformation not only changed Dragon Ball but all Shōnen anime. Hence, seeing the same 2D animation now redesigned for CG is bound to bother some fans.
