WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Mayor of Kingstown season 4, episode 2.
Mayor of Kingstown season 4, season 2, “Promises to Keep,” continues to set an all-time high for Taylor Sheridan’s gripping crime thriller. The series quickly filled the gaps left by season 3’s multiple character deaths, and even went a step further in its latest installment by killing off one of its most crucial supporting characters in an absolutely brutal fashion.
After Mike fails to sway the new Anchor Bay warden Nina Hobbes, who rules the prison with a self-righteous iron fist, he also ends up losing Carney, his only loyal soldier on the inside, by the end of the episode. Cortez, who tried to take out Bunny in the premiere episode, kills Carney in his own home, implying a connection between him and the warden’s right-hand man, David Torres.
Formidable threats like Callahan and Frank Moses also add great tension to this latest Mayor of Kingstown installment, while the innocent newcomer, Cindy Stephens, is also pulled into Mike’s agenda, promising to keep an eye on Kyle despite her green status. In addition to this, Ian’s murderous mishap with Charlie last season is coming back to haunt him thanks to the virtuous Assistant DA Evelyn.
Mayor Of Kingstown Season 4 Is The Best Crime Thriller On TV Right Now
Mayor of Kingston has gotten better with each new entry, and season 4 may just be its masterpiece. Even though we’re just two episodes in, the bar is already set incredibly high for the rest of the 10-part season based on the quality of the writing alone, as seen in the sharp yet smooth dialogue, the multi-layered, balanced plot, and the riveting character arcs that guarantee natural conflict.
What makes Mayor of Kingston season 4 so riveting through two episodes is the widespread threat that Mike faces from all angles, both inside the wall and outside. Both Frank and Callahan are playing their own long game with the McLusky brothers, one chipping and the other charming, but they are vipers and not to be trusted. Unfortunately, without Kyle’s backup, Mike’s more vulnerable than ever.
Mike’s convictions anchor the series in place, guided by a mostly admirable desire to achieve a greater good, as well as a fair share of saving his own ass (and those of his closest friends). Mike remains exactly what a great TV fixer should be and is arguably even better this season with Iris, his overused Achilles heel, no longer in the picture.
If Ian does end up getting pinned for the Charlie incident, even though it looks like he may be planning a hit on Evelyn, Mike will be at his lowest point in the series so far. The way this season is going, that seems to be exactly where Mike is headed.
Frank Moses & Callahan May Not Be The Deadliest Threats This Season
Mike faces no immediate danger after two episodes of Mayor of Kingstown season 4, but there’s definitely something brewing between him and the true “big bad” of this installment – Nina Hobbs. My initial thought when Cortez killed Carney was that he was connected to the Colombians, like Roberto Cruz, who was talking to Torres in the prison lunchroom before Carney backed him off.
The fact that Carney had to tell both Torres and Hobbs one of the fundamental rules of working in a prison (keep a safe distance from the prisoners) is incredibly suspicious. I think both Torres and Hobbs are too smart not to know that “day one” procedure, so it’s more likely that their unnatural comfort and immediate sense of control over the prisoners are linked to their own hidden corruption.
Torres may have some Colombian organized crime ties that Hobbs may be unaware of. I think between the two, he’s clearly the one who does the dirty work, probably most of her. Hobbs may not be as virtuous as she seems – her track record of cleaning up messy prisons likely does not come from sweeping reform. She may not need Mike to keep the peace because she’s already connected.
My guess is that Torres and Cortez are on the same side, but perhaps they are working for Hobbs, who is calling the shots inside and out. This means that she could have put out the hit on Bunny and Carney – she did tell Carney she and Torres were prepared to handle their wards by any means necessary – perhaps killing Carney was the means, and the end is snuffing out Mike.
