For fans of Shaman King in the early 2000s, they might not have guessed its manga publication was such a turbulent process, but its creator has long since moved past this. First teased five years ago, Hiroyuki Takei appears finally ready to put his heart into a new series. Takei’s next manga, swear, will release on December 19, 2025.
The news comes via an announcement from the newly-unveiled CoroCiao warehouse, itself a fusion of CoroCoro’s branding and Ciao’s shōjo appeal, bringing together top creators like Takei under Shogakukan’s latest magazine. the manga, swear, is hyped as the “pinnacle of near-future occult x mecha battles” alongside Takei’s lovely tribute to his relationship with the conjoined magazines.
Shaman King Creator’s New Manga Is Announced with Adorable Tribute
Juro’s launch is set for its debut a month from now, teased by Archipel’s documentary on December 24, 2019. Thus, Takei’s new series signifies a full departure from the long saga of Shaman King, its sequels and spin-offs, and the saga it endured under Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump before going to Kodansha.
Alongside Juro’s announcement, Takei described a storied past with the CoroCoro magazine, having won a prize for a Mini 4WD design contest, one of the many brand tie-ins of the magazine. He additionally comments on how the magazine is largely the fusion of manga brands respectively marketed towards young boys and teenage girls, a fascinating turn considering typical manga demographics.
“I was 14 when I won a prize in the Mini 4WD design contest and was featured in the magazine, so it’s actually been about 40 years (40 years!) since my debut in CoroCoro. To think that the day will come when CoroCoro, the incarnation of boys, will be published alongside Ciao, the incarnation of girls, is truly a testament to the passage of time over the past 40 years. It feels like a school trip, a school excursion, or, surprisingly, a co-ed school. I worry about whether I can properly coexist with the girls, but this is also a good learning opportunity for boys. I hope that reading CoroCiao will help me become a popular guy.

Thus, the tribute is given more context. Takei, having an adorable backstory as a creator contributing to CoroCoro magazine before mainstream success, even named his new protagonist after Shunsaku Tamiya, former chairman and representative director of the Tamiya Corporation, manufacturer of the 4WD model cars. Even the featured illustration shows Mamiya holding a 4WD model.
What Happened to Shaman King?
The story of Shaman King’s rise and decline is complicated, but Takei spoke with Archipel about the frustrations of declining popularity and creating a fitting end for his fan base. The manga’s migration over to Kodansha included follow-ups from Takei, and even more spin-offs, with 2024’s Shaman King Yard announcement to be the last arc for Takei’s contributions.
The fact that I am not being creative now is what frustrates me the most. I am planning my next series. I want to go all in on it. Right now I am clearing things up towards that.
It’s tough not to be working on it now. What I want to focus on the most for my next manga is to apply more care than ever before. I aim at making something I can be proud of in shonen manga. I want to make a solid series. I feel that Shaman King is a series that is somewhat being looked down on, I want to prove that it’s a proper series and that it deserves its place.”

This was said almost six years ago, with Shaman King later receiving multiple anime revivals on Netflix. While the series has since come and gone following this return, longtime fans are still excited to see what comes next for Takei.
