A beloved former Death in Paradise inspector will have a special role in season 2 of the show’s Australia-set spinoff, Return to Paradise. 14 seasons in Death in Paradise is still one of the BBC’s best cozy murder mystery shows. not so Return to Paradise had a lot to live up to.
Thankfully, in introducing a brand-new, quirky, and compelling investigator in Anna Samson’s lead detective, Mackenzie Clarke, Return to Paradise quickly captured what made the so-called “Paraverse’s” other shows so widely popular: confounding cases, gorgeous seaside vistas, and the perfect balance of humor and personal drama.
Of course, Return to Paradise could never fully abandon the show it spun off from, and Death in Paradise’s third detective inspector, Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon), was reintroduced as Mackenzie’s long-distance London mentor in season 1. O’Hanlon will reprise his role in Return to Paradise season 2, and star Anna Samson revealed to RadioTimes.com why Mooney’s continued presence is so important in the show.
“What’s interesting is, his scenes are quite brief. There’s these brief moments of coming back to London, but I’m noticing that even his character is developing and is on this journey as well, how he feels about Mackenzie,” the actress explained.
Samson went on to liken Mooney’s character to a “fairy godfather,” of sorts, for Mackenzie, a character who prefers solitude and stoicism over friendships and camaraderie — except with a select few.
“There’s something almost a bit magic about (O’Hanlon’s) character in our show, that he’s weirdly looking after (Mackenzie) at a distance, and there’s a kind of magic fairy godfather thing to what he’s doing with that character. And basically, he’s nudging her in the direction of her own happiness without her knowing.”
Samson continued, “It’s not quite written in the script, obviously, it’s just this, like, shimmery otherness to him and how he obviously really cares about Mackenzie. That’s really clear, even in those small scenes.”
Ardal O’Hanlon’s DI Mooney was probably Death in Paradise’s most empathetic lead investigator, still grieving the recent death of his wife when his character was first introduced. Acting as a mentor and supportive force for Mackenzie, even just over the phone, has proven to be a fitting way to bring this fan-favorite detective back on the small screen.
Other returning characters for Return to Paradise season 2 includes Mackenzie’s former fiancée and Dolphin Cove’s resident ME, Glenn Strong (Tai Hara), Lloyd Griffith’s DSC Colin Cartwright, and Catherine McClements’ Senior Sergeant Philomena Strong. Also reprising their roles for the second season are Celia Ireland as Reggie Rocco, Aaron L. McGrath as Constable Felix Wilkinson, and Andrea Demetriades as Daisy Dixon.
