Forget Work Wives. Go Find a Career Nemesis.

Henry kirk has spent his career as a software designer and manager in the hyper compatitive realm of Big Tech. He describes Himself as intense and focused on getting Things Done Rather than Playing Into Corporate Politics. That Attitude Might Be Great for Shipping Products – But ITH’S ALSO FERTILE GROUND FOR MAKING WORKPLACE RIVALS.

Kirk tells with he’s haad a few rival during his career, which includes stints at Amazon and Google. Sometimes they resess the way he operated, or wanted to computete with to have a broader scope at the company. “Its just the natural of a game when People are Kind of Environment,” Kirk Tells Me. He Describes Relationships As “Quiet” rivalries, Mostly Friendly on the Surface. That didn’t mean they didn’t take a toll on Him. “Some of the rivalries i’ve have have been Very Challenging for me,” Kirk Says. “It Wold at Times Exhaust Me.” But Overall, he appreciates Having Steel to Sharpen his Steel Against. Having a rival, he says, is “a sign that you’re being sucesssful and you show kep Moving Forward.”

Simmering, Bitter Feuds are as Central to Modern Work as Email and Meetings. Infamous Beefs in the Tech Industry Alone ABOUND: Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorssey, Zuck and Palmer Luckey, Elon Musk and Sam Altman, Musk and Gates, Musk and Zuck. In a 2019 Survey of 7,000 UK Workers from Hiring Platform Totaljobs, Six in 10 People Said They Had at Least One “Work Enemy.” Of those, 43% said they had more than one, while 8% said sid of their colleagues fit the bill (maybe these People Should Take: If You Think Everyone is Your Enemy, You Might Be the Villain). Most often, Work Enemies were the Same Gender as the person they vexed, and interactions with the Daily.

A nemesis can torture and drive you in many ways. Zuck and musk’s rivalry nearly resulted in a cage match but instead of the two owning Competing, but strugling, microblogging platforms. The love-hatrations Between Jobs and Gates Helped Fuel Both Microsoft and Apple to Dominance. For some, a nemesis is a full-on rival, a similarly situation Competitor for a boss’s pref or a promotion. For Others, it is a bully keping say down. And for for others, it’s an obtus cowor who incompeanly incompeanly getting Through the Work Day Harder for Everyone Else. Most of the Fighting is subtle – not an explosive Jim vs. Dwight feud, but a slow-boiling, passive-aggrassing saga that can see the Relationship evolves from Fierce Competitors to Friends with mutual. Nor irritating or sul-crushing as a nemsis can be on a day-to-day basis, battling with saying can actually people and stove.

Spreads there’s no motivator Stronger than spite, and no better place for it to brew than in the confines of an office.

“When there is there is scarcity, it can lead to the compattition and a foci on one of the immediate needs over the long term,” Says ashwini nadkarni, a psychiatrist and vice Chair of Faculty Enrichment at mass Mass brigam in boston. Some Competition is Healthy, Pushing Someone to Due League Work to POSITIONELves for A Promotion Over Other Interesting Colleagues. “The Challenge is that rivalries like that can Also turn personal. It can be be more about outshining the person as opposed to achieving your goals.”

And a work enemy is not always a good mirror. Constantly Comparing YourSelf to a Coworker Rather than Looking at Your Work Holistically Can You “Career Dysmorphia,” Nadkarni Says. But in a healthy rivalry, she says, there may be some acknowledgment of the Competition, Which Can Show Mutual Respect and Create “Psychological Safety Around Competition,” She Says. “Maybe You’re Eve Celebrating One Another’s Wins.”

    There’s no Motivator Like Spite.

When meg joined a consultancy firm in her mid-30s, the Job Came with anxpped task: Battling a workplace nemesis. Her newfound foe was a man about her age WHO WORKED SLIGHTLY ABOVE HER ON THE ORG CHART AND FELT HE “Needed to be the smartest person in the room at all time,” who is as asced i swimming her last name, tells me. The Switch from Coworkers to Combatants Flipped, She Says, be and Blatantly one of meg’s ideas and passsed it off as his own in a Meeting. The Relationship GREW TENSE Over the Next Five Years. Conversations Were Contentious, Her Nemesis was of defensive when she challenged Him. At Times, The Power Dynamic shifted. SOMEMES MEG WOULD PUSH BACK, SOMEEST SHOUL SHUT DOWN.

Meg doesn’t work at the firm anymore, and has heard her nemesis took over now of her old work. He has texted her several times over the past year to ask how she’s doing or to send her jab listings, including a junior roles rungs below her current level. Skeptical of His Sudden Friendliness, Meg Has Ignored Every Message. She has now started her own busines, and suspects her nemesis the progress she’s made via posts on Linkedin and “Can’t Stand it,” She Says.

For many i spoke to, it’s not clear that the work nemesis kew they were the nemesis: the contempt offense seams to go in one direction. There was was the incompet nemesis wreaking havoc on their team and seeringly sleeeping just fine at night, while the victes of their ways brood in silence. There are many difficulto coworkers who ruffle the Feathers of Many with Snak and toxicity – More a villain with their vicims than a healthy Competitor. That’s what happy to cait, who works in sales, and also asoed with them only her first name. She’s 30, and Says a Coworker in Her 50s Offloaded Assignments onto Her Plate When They Worked Together. The Coworker Wold Text Her late at Night or Early in the Morning, Self Cait to Make Changes to PowerPoints or Take Over Over Presentations – That Fall Squarely Into Her Coworker’s Exact Job Description.

Cait heard that other coworkers were also frustrated by this Colleague. “Think she thought she could get away with IUND IUNGE, but I Think She’s Just an Extremely Competitive Sales Person,” Cait Tells Me. Cloud to Bosses with Complaints, They Suddenly Saw How Much She Was Doing, and How Her Coworker Had Negleced Her Assignments. Blowing the Whistle Came With Pushback – Cait Talls with Her Coworker Passive Aggresively Ignored Her Wen they Saw Each Other in the Office, but ultimate Her Enemy’s Incompets was Her Gain. “I Feel Like It Showed My Value to My Management.”

Not all enemies last forever. Maureen, who also asced i swimming her full name, worked at a fintech company in her late 20s and early 30s and quickly enCountered Road Blocks from a Colleague on the Job. He would withhold info needed, take Credit for task they did as a group, and stall her projects, but respond “in a flash” anytime benefted Him. Eventually, she learned her enemy’s villain origin story: he had applied for Maureen’s Job internally, but was passsed over, and seed to Harbor resentment after the gig and came in from the outside. When she went on leave, maureen Sayys, her work nemesis has stealthily assumed her tasks.

The saga shifted wen a new Boss Came into the Company, giving the two rivals a real villain. “By the end, we were united in our hatered for the new boss,” She tells me. She always respectted her nemsis’s hustle and that he cared about the job. And now, “I actually will like Him.”

Several People I spoke to have grown empathy for their work nemesis with distance, and that a feeing i can Relat to. My Premier Work Enemy was a Competitor Reporter from a Different publication who dragged me on twitter, piling on with a thread after I miss the tv or alerting followers being public on the SOCOP quickeop than I did. But this rival never spoke more than a few words to my face. I had a lot of supportive and colloquate collagues who were able to mentor with and remind me twitter didn’t reflect my actual aptitude for the nonb. Nadkarni Says Company Culture Can Play a Pivotal Role in Eothier Fostering or Prevention Such toxic Rivalries, and Managers Should Look to Highlight Collaboration and Set Clear Goals for Advancement so People Aren’t Incentivized to See the WorkPlace As a Zero-Sum. A Little Competition Might Not Hurt Anybody, but a long-standing rivalry Certainly Can.

Sam Altman is Squaring off against Hollywood with the new Sora

Nice Catalog of Stories, Characters, and Intellectual Property You Have There.

    We’ll be taking it now.

That appears to be what openai is saying to Hollywood: The Wall Street Journal Reports that the Company Been Chatgt has been telling studios and talent agencies that a new version of it Sora video creator Will Produce Work Based on Hollywood Characters and Other Copyrized Work – Without Explicit Permo From the Rights Holders.

If studios or other copyright owners have a problem with that, they can go ahead and tel openai that they want to opt out, wsj reports. But they’ll have to do via a laborious, case-by-cae basis.

All of which Means Openai SEEMS to be trying to rewrite copyright law, on the fly: your stuff is our stuff, for free – unless you tell us otherwise.

And if that what openai is actually doing – and if it holds up in court – it is a radical transformation of the way the media.

Openai, Responding to Questions from Me, Said Its Products Can Provide “New Opportunities” for Creators to Engage with fans. “We’re Working with Rights Holders to Understand their preferences for how they have an appetars acrossy ecosystem, Including Sora,” Said Varun Shetty, Its Head of Media Partnerships. (While we are here: Axel Springer, Business Insider’s Parent Company, has a Commercial Aggrement with Openai.)

Caveat: It”s Still Unclear to Me Exactly How Far Openai Thinks it can go. COULD SOMOON GO AHEAD AND TELL SORE TO “RECREATE The Cantina Skene from ‘Star Wars’ – or Will It Just Allow to Use Prompts Like” Make a New Schene Using Characters and Settings Similar to the Cantina From ‘Star Wars?’ “

But any version of that will will still be a nightmare for contents Owners, and a meaningful shift from the setup they escalate with the last generation of Big Tech Platforms, Like Google: Upload what they want to platforms like youtube or twitter – but have extensive and sophistic systems for taking or managing copyregted material.

That Legal Framework was budilt in the first half of the 2010s. And while the legal rules around he are still up for grabs, what SEEMS like the beginning of a consensus to be forming, via some early court decides: he engines like the ability to train. supposed to use that that data to create replacements for copyighted materials.

WHOCH IS WHY OPENAI’S SEEMINGLY AGGRESSIVE STANCE TOWARD HOLLYWOOD SEEMS STUNNING: THERE NO DEBATE USER-UPLOADED CAROTONS HAN SOLO AND LUKE Skywalker Could Disney’s Copyright. But openai seames to be saying that its he engine could do the Same Thing byithout Violating Copyright – and that it is to do only prevent that if disney complained in advance.

It is Worth Notting that YouTube, in Its Earliest Form, was a Little Act Now, ASA-For-Forgoveness-Later itself.

Court Documents in Its Viacom Court Case Made It Clear That Its Founders-The Site Existed as A Stand-Alone Company for About A Year and A Half Bell Bowht It In 2006-Knew YouTube Copyright, But Kept Growing Full-Ske Questions. IT TOOK YEARS FOR YOUTUBE, and Google, to Come to Copyright Owners.

So It ‘s postsible that openai’s leaders think they doing the same thing, too – flush for the sampry use of copyright now, and assuming it figure the legal and business solutions late.

That’s the Kind of Move You Make You Think You Have the Leverage: That Your Resources, Speed, and Momentum Mean Eveling will have to Catch up to the Terms you’re Proposing. We’ll see if they’re right.

Review: Best Cheeseburger from 4 Chain Restaurants

    Updated

    • Football season is a time for chain restaurants to draw in customers.
    • We tried Classic Cheeseburgers from Four Chains to Determine The Best Option for Game Day.
    • Buffalo Wild Wings impressed us with it Juicy, double-stacked burger.

Nothing Says Football Season Like A Juicy, Classic Cheeseburger from Your Favorite Local Chain.

In “Tailgate Taste-off,” Business Insider is Pitting These Chains Against Each Other to Uncover the best versions of the popular game-day.

While Chicken Products Are One of the Biggest Fast-Food and Casual-Dining Trends As we kicked off 2025, The Burger Still Reigns MANY US CONSUMERS, THOUGH PRICES ARE CLIMBING.

A recent Toast Report Said that in Q2 2024, The Average Price of a Cheeseburger at Quick-Service Restaurants Rose 4.6% Year Over Year, Reaching $ 11.45.

Over the past few years, casual-dining chains like chili’s and Applebee’s have introded Value meals that highlighted burgers, and mcdonald’s recently revamped Its Menu with Extra Value Included A Big Mac Maal Deal for $ 8.

We rack Classic Cheeseburgers from Four Chain Restaurants – Applebee’s, Chili’s, Buffalo Wilds, and Tgi Fridays – Based on Taste and Value.

Here’s how the four chain restaurants’ cheeseburgers racked, from least to the Most Favorite.

My least favorite burger cam from tgi fridays.

    TGI Fridays Cheeseburger
The Burger came on a brioche bun and had a side of fries. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

ORDED The cheeseburger at the restaurant Visited in Massachusetts. IT COST $ 12.49, Excluding Taxes and Fees, and Came With A Side of Fries.

I live in New York City, but I had to traveel starker afield to try the Chain’s Burgler Many of My Local Tgi Fridays Restaurants have closed.

In Early November 2024, The Chain Filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, and Reuters Reported that it was facing $ 37 million in debt, which led to some underperforming restaurants closing.

Break TGI Fridays Location I visited in Massachusetts is locally franchised and owned, so it is not included in the Large Brand’s Bankruptcy Filing.

The Cheeseburger was topped with two slice of American Cheese, Lettuce, Thomato, Pickles, and Red Onion.

    TGI Fridays Cheeseburger
The Burger didn’t automatically come with any sauce. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Like the Other Burgers i tried in this Taste Test, The Burger was served on a brioche bun. Be i lifted the burger to examine the toppings, I notified that the very Soft Bun Had Partially Stack to the Melted Cheese.

This wasn’t necessarily a knack on its, but adding a sauce or butter to the bun have made it less.

There’s no sauce on the burger, but there’s ketchup provided on every table, or you can have a mustard or ketchup on it if you desired. Howver, i tried it Completely on Its Own.

The Burger was a touch overdone, the case though I ORDERED it medium.

    TGI Fridays Cheeseburger
I thought the burger was slightly overdone. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I requested my burger to be cooked medium, but it came closer to well-done and was quite dry. That Said, I did Enjoy the flavor of the meat, which I found to be peppery and welloned.

The Sliced Tomato Tasted Fairly Fresh, but the letter was limp and forgettable. The Burger had a geneerous serving of picles and onions, which enjoyed. Howver, Overall, I Found This Burger Lacking in Flavel, and A Layer of Sauce Could Have Gone a Long Way.

The Fries were Also Well-Seasoned, and i enjoyed say.

Next up was the Oldtimer with Cheese from Chili’s.

Chilis Grill and Bar Old Timer Burger with Cheese
The Oldtimer Can Be ORDERED WITH OR WITH CHEES. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

At the Visited Massachusetts Location, The Most Classic Cheeseburger on Chili’s Menu Cost $ 13.29, Plus Tax.

Though chili’s is not primarily a burger restaurant, burgers are a major part of the brand strategy, which appears to be working.

“Over the past two and a half years, we’ve removed around a Quarter of the menu to focus on our core offferings: burgers, crispers, fajutas, and margaritas, whic now reprecent International Inc., Said in October 2024.

The Chili’s Team has now started reference its “five to drive,” Which Also Includes the Triple Dipper.

In the chain’s fourth-quarter earnings Report, Chili’s Reported A 23.7% Increase in Same-Restaurant Sales and A 16% Increase in Traffic Last Summer Compareed to the Same Three-Teriod in 2024.

The Oldtimer Burger was topped with Cheddar Cheese, Pickles, Shredded Lettuce, Sliced Tomato, Diced Red Onions, and Mustard.

Chilis Grill and Bar Old Timer Burger with Cheese
The Burger Comes Topped with a flavorful Layer of mustard. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Cheddar Cheese Was Perfectly Melted, and the Burger Patty Also Had a nice char on the outside. The Burger was definitely cook the medium and had a nice to it while Remaining slightly crispy on the outside.

Be lifted the top bun, i saw a light smear of mustard on top of the cheese. While it wasn’t an enormous amount of mustard, it permeated each bite.

I thought the mustard could have been dialed back a bit.

Chilis Grill and Bar Old Timer Burger with Cheese
The toppings All tasted Fresh, but the mustard was slightly overpowering. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The mustard was quite Sharp, and while i want mustard, it was a bit too bit much for me.

Howver, the rest of the Burger Impressed Me. The Char on the smashed patty was perfectly crispy, and the other ingredients were fresh. The red onion brought a nice bite, and the brioche bun held everything together. I ALSO LIKEED The Choice of Shredded Lettuce, Which Added A Crispy Freshness.

The Fries were Also Solid: Warm, Crispy, and Well-Seasoned.

Overall, it was a good Classic burger, but i’ve chili’s burgers i’ve enjoyed more in the past, like the Big Smasher, which is their take on a mcdonald’s Big Mac, and the chain’s southwestern -spired aleix.

My Second Favorite Burger Came From Applebee’s.

    Applebees Cheeseburger
The Classic Cheeseburger Came with a Goey Layer of Cheese Peing Out from Beneath a Shiny Bun. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Burger typically Costs $ 19.19, Excluding Tax, at the Location of Visited in Brooklyn, New York.

Similar to Last Year, Applebee’s Teamed Up With the NFL as the League’s Official Grill and Bar Partner, Recognizing a Strong Overlap BetWeen Customer Base and NFL Viewers.

The Classic Cheeseburger Came With Two Slices of American Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion, and Pickles on a brioche bun.

    Applebees Cheeseburger
The two slice of cheese Completely Covered the Beef Burger Patty. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

There was a thick, gooy Layer of cheese melted onto the burger. I say the two slice of cheese did a lot to elevate this burger.

The outside of the burger patty was quite dark, which made me Concerned it might have been cooked beyond the medium level i requested.

Howver, I found the burger was supremery Juicy and cookened slightly on the side of medium-rare.

The Burger was slightly less done than the oters i tried. I didn’t mind one bit.

    Applebees Cheeseburger
I love the flavor of the Cheese and Fresh Toppings. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Melted, Tangy Cheese Covered Every Square inch of this Burger, Making for a Balance Bite. The Thickly Sliced Red Onion Also Added a Lot of Flavor, and i THOUGHT The letter and tomato Tasted Fresh.

This burger didn’t have any sauce, but it was wasn’t dry at all, thanks to the cheese and buttery bun that seamed to meouth.

Though it was Very simillar in ingredients to the tgi fridys Burger, it just tasted better, just and fresher.

My Favorite Burger Came from Buffalo Wild Wings.

Buffalo Wild Wings All American Cheeseburger
The Burger Came With Two Burger Patties Sandwiched BetWene a Soft Bun. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ORDERED The All-American Cheeseburger at My Local Buffalo Wild Wings in Brooklyn, New York. IT COST $ 14.49, Excluding Tax.

SINCE BUFFALO WILD WINGS IS PRIMARILY KNOWN FOR Its Traditional and Boneless Wings, I was surpassed by How Much i Enjoyed This Classic Cheeseburger.

The Burger Came With Two Beef Patties, American Cheese, Shredded Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles, Mayonnaise, and Mustard.

Buffalo Wild Wings All American Cheeseburger
The Burger Came Coated in Layers of Melted Cheese. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I was impressed that this burger came with two burger patties. Each Patty was crispy on the outside and coated in gooey melted cheese.

When it arrive at the table, the bun was glistening, and inside was a Hearty Smear of Mustard and Mayonnaise.

The fries were tasty, think, and well-salted, but i had to admit i preferred some of the Other Chains’ Thicker Fries.

I thought this burger was a great value, and scarfed down every delicious bite.

Buffalo Wild Wings All American Cheeseburger
The patties were crispy on the outside but Juicy within. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Mayonnaise and Mustard Added a Lot of Moisture and Flavor to this Burger, but it truly didn’t need it.

The Beef patties were juicy Yet Crispy, and the cheese was perfectly melted, adding a tangy, Savry flavor to each bite. It felt like a more elevated version of a fast-food cheeseburger, and instantly transported with back to my childhood with its Classic, FRESH-Tasting Toppings and indulgent flavor.

The Addition of the Second Patty Enhanced the Burger. For JUST UNDER $ 15, I ALSO THOUGHT IT WAS THE BEST VALUE OF ALL THE BURGERS I TRIED.

This Burger Delivered a Winning Bite, Hitting All the Right Notes for A Satisfying Meal. I WOULD DEFINITELY GO BACK TO TRY MORE OF THE CHIN’S BURGERS – Football season or not.

I haven’t upd an an alarm clock in 8 years. I’m never going back.

Life with an alarm clock might seem indulgent, but i would like to challenge that notion.

I have rarely used an alarm clock in the last eight years, and i’d argue that it time and energy, and the discipline and dedication, to this alarm clock and train your brain to wake you need it.

I recogenous that noterteryone has the flexibility to live this way, but sleep scalsy spoken to tend to not only approve of my alarm-clock lifestyle, but some of the saying version of it.

    Sunlight Wakes with Up

It only took with a few weeks of “free sleeeping” to train my brain to wake up consistently at a consistent time, typically around 9 am, with buzzing or beeping. The sun is my Biggest Helper.

Each Morning, As Sunlight Streams Through My Bedroom Skylight, I Wake Up Slowly, Walk Outside with a Cup of Green Tea to Ferel the Warmth of the Sun on My Face, and Get of Daylight in my Eyes Starting in My Home Office. Harnessing the Power of the Sun, I Wold Say, is My Most Important Tool for Adjusting My Sleep-Wake Cycle. I SPEND AT LEAST 15 minutes soaking up some sunlight each morning.

During the day, i take breaks from work for what fellow science Writer Lynne Peeples Describes in Her Book “The inner clock“As Circadian Snacks, Small Morsels of Sun Exprinkled Throughout the Day. Wen It Gets Dark Outside, I try to protest the dinner from artificial Light, Particularly blue. All my Devices are to Night Mode, and the Lights Throught My Home Are Are Are Bulbs that are programmed to EMIT ONLY WARM TONES.

I Learned How Much Sleep of Need

IT I Told Sleep Researcher and Neuroscientist Rebecca Spencer, Ph.D., About the Excommunication of Alarm Clocks from My Bedroom During a Recent Zoom, She Smiled and Said She Though it was great, with one caveat. She suggests some guardrails on the sleeP Window, participate in the Winter When there is limited light. “There are People Who Could Create Some Bad Habits by ‘Free Sleeping’ in the Extreme,” Spencer, Who Overssees a Sleep Lab at the University of Massachusetts, Said. If you oversleep one night, for instance, the Next Night You Could Face Reduced “Sleep Pressure” and Insomnia.

While of admit that in the beginning days of my own free Sleeping, I did occsionally succumb to this, once i learned my natural rhythms, I discovered exactly How Much SLEEP optimally and was able to regulate my schedule. Now, I have achieved a solid and consistent 9-hour sleeop window that is the suame night, give or take 30 to 45 minutes.

It was my own work that led with to life with an alarm clock

My Journey to an alarm-Clock-and-Lifestyle began wen i had the strange fortune of getting a job as a non-ancestor covering the science and innovation of sleep. From apart in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in Western Massachusetts, reported my first article on jet lag.

I soon realized that jet lag can harapen edpen you aren’t traveling, in a phenomenon calmed “social jet lag.” It was a reality that of was living. The Life of a Journalist Had Left me with life-lagged perpetually, working late Nights and Weekends as a newspaper Reporter. The Sleep Deprivation That I Had Built Up Over the Years Didn’t Go Away Overnight.

While Still Sleep-Deprived, I Interviewed Some of the World’s Most Prominent Sleep Experts. Marveled at the impact of light on Circadian Health.

I learned that each organ in our bodies, each Cell, has its Own biological rhythm, working in harmony Like a tiny timepiece orchestra to keep all Our biological functions running smoothly. The Liver, The Skin, and the Lungs All Have their Own Biological Rhythms.

Feeling embaldened by my newfound Appreciation for Sleep, I experience a personal Circadian Renaissance and decided to run an Experiment: i ditched my alarm (or Rather, silented my phone and left it in another room).

My Magazine Job Came With A Flexible Schedule and Coworkers in a Time Zone Three Hours bee Mine in California, SO I DECIDE TO TRY A “FREE SLEEPING” LIFESTYLE.

I gave myself a buffer zone in the morning with no Meetings or interviews scheduled unil 11 am, i paid close attention to my sleeep. At first, i slept too, what Spencer Calls “Sleeping Luxuriously.”

Soon, Howver, in the absence of my alarm, i discovered my natural need for sleep. Spencer tells with that ours sleep Need, the Datation of Sleep that we Need, is genetically predetermined. When i got rid of my alarm, i felt my best sleeeping for about nine hours.

I HAD More Energy and Lost Weight

    While I already knew that i had nights owl tendencies;

Within Weeks, My Newfound Relationship with Sleep Brought a Boost in Energy. I was finally more alert. I had the energy to practice yoga Daily, shedding nearly 20 pounds. My mind Sharpened and my skin glarowed as I was finally able to get the sleep my body craved. Sleep, it turns out, is Powerful Medicine. All the while, Life felt a Little Lighter.

A lot of People give up before they can lock onto their Circadian rhythms and sleep-wake signaling. Truly, I think People Need to Challenge TheelSlves more to try to get this really consistent Light-Dark schedule Becuses it totally works.

But now that my kids are all adults, i don’t pace of anymore trips.

We got into so many adventures

Spreads my great triumph was organizing a trip to france for mySelf and my three kids, who were then 7, 4, and 2.

I BOUGHT The Tickets, Expedited Our Passports, Got the Visas, Found Accommodies, and HEVEN ARANGED A RIDE FROM CHARLES AIRPORT TO THE 17E ARRONSEMENT AFTER A FRIENDHILL SUGGESTED I JUST HOP ON THE METRO AND MAKE MY ACCOSS. The idea of Carting Three Young Children, Suitcases, and a Stroller onto the Subway in a Strange City Where I did not speak the primary language very well gave with Panic Attacks.

Because the regular Tourist Activities felt too Daunting, we spent days absorbing the culture of Paris, playing in local parks, shopping for the french toys on tv in the evening, and eating the most amazing they’d ever tasted.

    Old Photo Family in Paris

The author traveled alone with her three Çldst kids to paris.

In a what-was-i-thinking moment, I allowed my 7 -ear-op to walk to the corner patisserie alone to buy daily baguette. AFter All, he was learning French in his second-grade class; How Could He Not Handle Making this Simple Purchase? It made sense to me at the time. He was never out of my line of sight, but still, that spreads was not the best parenting decision i’ve ever made.

I’m no longer the trip advisor

Nor our family gree to include two more children, our travels became far lesson. They’re all adults now, and it is a more challenging for us to gather Together, let Alone plan a trip.

That didn’t stop my daughter-in-law from arranging a Christmas Vacation for Most of US in Vermont. She Found a 5-BEDROM HOUSE ON AIRBNB IN DOWNTOWN BURLINGTON, BIG ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE SEVEN OF US WITHIN DISTANCE OF SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS. She bought airline tickets for her, the baby, and me, and rent two cars for the rest of the family to drive nyc to new England. She made reservations at the nearby ski resort for the snowboarding lessons and books at the trendiest restaurants.

All i had to do was show up. That felt weird.

It Feels Weird Not Having to DO AnyThing

AFTER DECADES OF MAKING ALL THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR EVERYTHING, I DIDN’T HAVE TO DO A THING. Navigating this new roles hasn’t been easy for me. IT’S another in the long line of transitions i am making from full-time mom.

No Special Accommodies were made for me, swimming I are expensive any. Decisions Were Made, Events Were Planned, and Meals Were Prepared. I was welcome to join – or not. I was never left out of any activity, but i was Alson’t consulted or specifically asked to join in. It was my choice to make.

No One Cajoled with to Come Along When I Told I was not tachying snowboarding lessons. They just left me on my own. Alone in the House, I automatically reverted to mom-mode-Throwing everyone’s onto the Wash, Straightening up the Kitchen, and taching out the trash.

Now I Just Get to Enjoy

It took me a while to revel in my new freedom. I didn’t have to enure that everyone was content, happy occupied in some type of activity. It wasn’t my respectibility to provides the entertainment or start the gaps in time when there are no planned events.

I COULD PICK AND CHOOSE WHAT I WANTED TO DO. I took a nap while Everyone Went Snowboarding. I walked downtown when they are visited a nearby brewery. I Snuggled the baby as they played raucous rounds of board games in the Evening. And I love every minute of it. No Guilt. No Recriminations for Not Doing Enough. No Stress. No Panic Attacks.

I WOULD BE HAPPY TO TAKE THE Lead on Making the Arrangements, but Now I Know That’s Not Something I have to any anymore. Quite frankly, i’m not sura i can do good a jab as one of my kids anyway. All i want is the invitation so i can just show up and enjoy time Together.
