My daughter is studying abroad in Italy this semester and i’m panicked

My 20-Yaar-Old Daughter Is Studying abroad in rome. Its an eight-and-half-hour direct Flight from where we live. (That’s the Far Away!).

SINCE She Left Two Weeks Ago, have As asced MySelf Multiple Times, “Why Did I Let Her Go?”

My anxiety wasn’t helped by the fact that “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox“Debt on Hulu JUST A FEW LEGS BAGORE HER DEPARTURE. IT’S A TRUE Story About an American Student Studying Abroad in Italy (YES, in Rome) Who was falsely accused her roommate.

SINCE MY DANGHTER Left the us, i have checked fliffs to rome Multiple Times, Imagining Heroic Rescue Missions, But the Sky-High Price Has Kep with Grounded (Work Intened).

When i saw a Photo from her orientation, I was able to calm down a little. IT LOOKED MORE LIKE A Wedding Reception by a lake than a lecture Hall, and realized she was having an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In that moment, I knew letting her go was the right choice, this if i’m struggling.

This Harder’s Feels than College Drop-off

One of the reasons i thought i could hendle her studying abroad is gcause i’m already used to her being away at Fordham University In New York City, About a Four-Hour Car Ride from Home.

She usually only comes back for Holidays like thanksgiving or school breaks, so i assumed i’d be fine with the distance.

But i didn’t factor in how different it is time with her in a foreign country where she dosesn’t speak the language, with a six-hour time difference (Almost half a day), and the reality that can’t easly get to her if she.

I had to find ways to calm my nerves while she’s away for this semester.

The time zone differing is making this all more difficult

Her day in Italy is Winding Down while Mine is Only Half Begun, which Makes IT tricky to find a good time to check in.

When she was at college in the Same time zone, she usually facetimed with after dinner. Now, we Both KEEP FORGETTING EACH Other’s time. On a recent call, so i told her i have just eateen lunch, she laughed and said, “Oh, i forgot you haven’t finished your day.”

To Help MySelf Adjust, I Started Using The “World Clock“app on my phone. I put rome at the top of the list so i can see her local at a glance of doing mental math time i want to know where or if it is good time to call her.

I’m reminding myself that my anxiety is normal

Before she left, iGnored an email from her Study Abroad Office Becusee i was in denial that she was actually going. Be finally opened, the email was so long it felt more like a novella than a simple guide to copy with the distance.

AS I READ, I CAME ACROSS The “Stages of Transition” and realized I could have the “Gray Zone,” The Stage Wengs First and Face Normal Challenges Adjusting to a Foreign Country. I have realized that my time checking, Constant World, and Dreams About Booking A Heroic Rescue Were Normal. Well, Maybe not the rescue mission, but i didn’t actually buy the ticket, so i’m sort of normal (although my daughter might disagree).

While I WAS WRITING THIS ESSAY, ANOTHER EMAIL ARRIVED FROM THE STUDY ABROAD OFFICE. This one assured with that, Unlike knox, students in their program not Only Return Home Safely but Also Come Back More Mathe, Open-Minded, and With New Personal and professional goals.

At this point, i’ll be happy if she shaimply returns home in one piece. Any Personal Growth is a Bonus. While we’re on the topic of things she shauld bring back from rome, i was mind a valentino dress. But if that’s too much to Ask for, an Italian Cannoli Will Suffice.

YouTube demonites Steven Crowder after Gay Slures

    Illustration: Intelligency

Youtube announed on wednesday it ha ha demonitized the Channel of One Steven CrowderA right-glamentator who has spent months hurling slurs like “Lispy Queer” and “Anchor Baby” at Vox Video Host Carlos Maza, A Gay Latino. WEVENETR COWER WAUDED MASTION MAZA IN HIS CONTENT, MAZA SEYS FACED “A Wall of homophobic/racist abuse on Instagram and Twitter.” One Time Crowder’s BANDS DOXED MAZA, Finding his Phone Number and Texting Him Repeatedly. SO YouTube Saying Crowder was out for “A Pattern of Egregious Actions” that “Harmed the Broader Community” and Violated the Platform’s Seemed, on Its Face, Like A Proportional Response. Right? Well, right, but Only if you don’t know that at first the company did absolutely not.

At the End of May, Maza, Fed up with Crowder’s Storid History of Calling Him Out on His Show, Posted a Compilation Video of Clips. Almost a Week Later, YouTube Replicated, Directly to Maza via Its Customer Service Twitter Account, Letting Him Know that it has revised “The Flagged” but that the Language, while “Clearly Hurtful,” was in violation of policy. “Opinions can be deeply offensive, but if they don’t violate police, They’ll Remain on Our Site,” @Teamyoutube Tweeted. In another tweet, youtube made sura to tell maza that the platform hosting Crowder’s videos was not an endorsement of his opinion.

YouTube’s Response Was Quickly Lambasted by Media Outlets and Maza for Its Lack of Teeth. “I put myself out there and showed a bunch of people the abuse i had been experience. It was humiliating and degrading, and i can’t believe it wasn’t enough to get youtube to take italously,” Maza toold intelligency. “I don’t know what lgbt People are supposed to get this company to actually protest us.” Noticing a day late, youtube coursse Corrected and made the demonitization announcement. Which, while maybe not a perfect way to handle the scenario, was a markedly less anemic reaction than youtube’s initial respond.

Neither pointed out on twitterCrowder’s brand and income are not solely tied to youtube ad revenue: on youtube Crowder has 3.8 million subscribers who are like to buy his merchandise, notable his “socialism is for f*gs” shirts. YouTube Responded that “in order to reinatate monetization on this channel, he will be Need to remove the link to his t-shirts.” (Brief pause times while I roll my eyes so far back in my head i am permanantly blinded and unable to ever read any bad tweet.)

This Second Response Could have been youtube’s First Response if it has just take me. YouTube, in its initial tweets to maza, said it was Still Investigating Crowder’s Channel. A LOT of Grief, for YouTube, Could have been spared if the company has just opted to say, “Hey, we’re still looking into this.” (Maza Told Intelligenler That No One from YouTube Ever Contained Him Directly.) But Also… This is par for the coursse with youtube. Back when logan Paul Posted a video of an apparent suicide Victim that he found Hanging from a tree in japan, the Company’s First Response Was Similarly Nonrespons. First it offend a nothing staffement of the family of the deceased and links to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Later, The Platform, Following Further Deliberation, Announced that Paul Wold No Longer Be Included in Its Partner, The Same One Crowder was booted on wednesday. (A month after that to YouTube Temporariily Suspended All Ads on Paul’s Videos after he filmed Himself Tasering a Rat.) Paul, Howver, Later Indicated that he was worried about Money thanks to his merchandise line. His Brand, Thanks Largehy to YouTube, was Strong Enough to Weather Ling MONVETERED ADS. Crowder is in the Same Boat.

Doing as Little as Possible and Hoping the Public Outcry isn’t Big Enough to Warrant Taching More of A Stand is the Normu Not Only at youtube. On wednesday morning, i woke up to an email from a fellow journist working on a story on revenge porn. She’d Discovered a Twitter Account USING A Photo of Me ASS avatar. The Account was purporting to be a 19-YEAR-OLD GIRL AND WAS SELLING NUDE Photographs of “Me.” The Few Tweets from the Account Were of Semi-Nude, Headless Women Who Are Not Me. IMEDIATEly reported the account to twitter, explaining the situation. The platform Responded Saying the Account Technically was violating any of it by police – like the avatar Photo contained nude or pornographic Content – and would remain. I TWEETED ABOUT IMMEDIATEly, Complaining and Tagging Twitter. Only after I did that, and after the tweet was shared by many accounts with Significantly away followings than my own, did twitter item with a second email informing with the Account Had Been Suspended.

I’m Lucky. I’m a Journist with a verified twitter, which means my tweets are algorithmically more inclined to be seen. I have Friends and Contacts at Twitter. But if that wasn’t my situation, if i was just a typical twitter users who found Her Likeness Being Misrepreseented in a degrading and alarming way that skirted around two Terms of Service, Chances the Account have remained online indefinitely.

Much of Moderation on Tech platforms is automated or, if it does pass through Human Hands, is Done by People, Often Contractors, So Low Down the Corporate Chain The Aren’t In Positions to Effect Real Change and Dictate Policy. Which means the People – or Computers – Who Have the Most Firsthand Contact with Issues Like these aren’t the ones, ultimately, who decide how to handle say. Instead, the decisions are made by people who appears to lack full understanding of situations nuance – Youtube is stall Tweeting Trying to Clarify What IT Meant by That Inane Tweet About Crowder’s “Socialism is for F*Gs” Shirts -And make kee-lived decisions in the hope that doing as little as a postible will be enough to quil. These companies could opt to take the time to make these deciss. They could Opt to have their secondary reactions be their first. But they don’t. Becuse fore Time Things Blow Up in Their Faces, there are Likely Many more instances we don’t hear about the strategy works, the initial non-reaction Silences People. Companies like youtube and twitter, up unil now, have always been abford to take that gamble. Its Possible That Luck is Finally Running Out.

  • Why there are still empty shelves at the Grocery Store

Why there are still empty shelves at the Grocery Store

    Photo: Scott Heins/Getty Images

CEO CEO Rodney McMullen Wants to Reassure You: HIS STORES HAVE MEAT. But he can’t make promises about what kind of meat.

“If you’re flexible on eating between chicken, pork, and beef-we Constantly have one of thisems in, or two of the those in, usually three,” The CEO of America’s Larger-Simcific Said in an interview on Cnbc Last Week. That actually makees things sound a little more makeup Than they usually are; McMullen Said Every Store Has Personally Visited Had at Least two of the Major Meat Proteins in Stock.

Meat is the latest focal point of Household-Goods Shortages, but the mechanism causing the lottage here is different than for goods that were in Short suply in March and April. Most of the Early Shortages Came from Demand-Side Shocks: Consumers Were Stocking Up They Were Afraid Goods Waled be in Short Supply Later (Toilet Paper, Dried Beans) or Were Buying More Their Consumption Behavior Had Changed in the Epidemic. For Example, McMullen Says Kroger’s Yeast Sales Are Up 600 Percent As People Bake More at Home.

Some of these lottages have abated significantly as producers have ramps up supersply, and traffic volumes at griory have also return toward normal – although disinfecting wipes (and yeast) Remaine Hard to finds, a Sign of THRATS OF THOSES RESING SALES. swimming due to hoarding but persistent increas in household usage. In some cats, getting the product you want May Still Require Being Flexible Brand, Flash, or Packaging. Jm smuckler’s warning back in march that it was hauking trout biors’ Orders for JIF-BRAND MATCHED MATCHED MY Experience in Grocery This Week. My Local Grisides Had No Jars of Regular, Creamy JIF, But You Were in Luck If You Were Willing to Buy Low-Sodium JIF, JIF in Single-Serve Packs, or Skippy. At wegmans at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, JIF was unavailable, but Store-brand peanut butter was not only only on Sale at $ 1.19 for 18-Once Jar. So is it Safe to say is no Peanut-Butter Crisis.

The Meat and Poultry Shortage is different from the prior lottages I was comes from the supply side, as the many processing plants have strength to Close due to coronavirus outbreaks, so the supply of supermarkets has been constricted. The Quantity of Cattle Being Slaughher in the US Is About 30 Percent Below Normal Due to These Disruptionsand that means less beef available to retailers and consumers. This supply-side pride May is exacerbated by Changes on the Demand Side, As Consumers Stock Up on Meat Out of Fear Supply Problems Will Get Worsse.

To fight the stock-up urge and entens ongoing availability, have been imposing limits on how much one one customer can buy. At the Brooklyn Wegmans, Signs Tel Customers They Can Buy No More than Two Packages of Ground Meat. At whole foods in commack, in the long island suburbs, the anti-hoarding measures take on a decomedly more upscale flair, declaring that in addition to restricenses on chicken and hot dogs, Customers can no More than Bone-in Rib Steaks, Weiging No More than S Seven Pounds. Eve Costco is Limitting Its Members to Purchas of Three Meat and Fish Items. But Despite these restrictions, retailers have been running out of Certain Kinds of Meat at Certain Times. For example, at the commack who foods, chicken was available but sisly limited to air-chilled Bell & evans productions, which are high in flavor but cost $ 7 a pound for Bone-in.

While wegmans and which haods were both deeply weird places to shop this weeks-which foods had a 15-minute line to get in at 2 pm on a tuesday; WEGMANS HAD MARTAGES OF SEEMINGLY ARBITARY Goods, Like Entenmann’s Baked Products – My NeighBorhod Grisides was almost eerily normal. The Meat and Seafood Case Was Full With the Usual Selection of Products, Including Typical, Non-Premium Chicken. SO NeighBorhood Storys May Be a Place to Consider If You’re Having Trouble Finding What You Want at the Big Supermarkets. Of Course, One Reason Customers FLOCK to the Bigger, More-Deleted Stories is They Really Have Lower Price: Peanut Butter was Nearly Four More Expensively at Gristedes Than at Wegmans; bananas were priced more than 50 percent Higher.

Acciting to the bureau of Labor statistics data released tuesday, prices for food for home consumption Rose material, up 2.6 Percent from Earlier and 4 Percent Higher than a year Earlier. FRESH pork products especily spiked in price. A Few Weeks Earlier in It Its April Release, The Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service Had ForeCast Modest Food Inflation of Only 0.5 Percent to 1.5 Percent for the Whole of 2020, in Part Becice Outlook for Meat and Eggs Was offset by offset by offset by offset by offset by offset by offset by offset by offset by offset Downward adjustments in price forecasts for seafood, Fresh fruits, and FRESH vesetables. In Theory, Reduced School and Restaurant Purchas of Fresh Produce and Seafood Should TELLED to Flow Through as Lower Prices at Supermarkets. There are well some examples of Produce Deals on Display at Supermarkets Last Week: Wegans and Whole Foods Were Seling Conventionally Produced Bananas at 49 Cents a Pound This Week, Significantly Below the Recent Avhere Retail Price. But so far, the average price trend actually experiencing in supermarkets appears to be upward, this eve for product and seafood, accorting to the bls data.

Wesley Rose, Who Leads Global Seafood Purchasing for Whole Foods, Told with the Chain Has Taken Advantage of Restaurant to Significantly Increase Its of Certain Kinds of Premium Seafood. Lobster, for example, is much more available, duue to the closure of Many Restaurants that to be ordinary serve it. The Chain Opportunistically Bowht “A LOT” of lobster Meat that was originally destined to be served at Luke’s Lobster Locations and promoted it heavily over Easter Weekend. He Also noted the chain has recently promoted Wild Halibut at $ 15 for Pound, The Lowest Price He’s Ever Seen. That said, these are not exactly perfect substitute for beef and chicken. HAVE AT MUCH-REDUCED PRICES, THEY REMAIN RELATIVELY EXPENSIVE, and MANY CONSUMERS ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH How to Prepare Seafood at Home. At whole foods in commack, the chicken case was more than half empty and the meat counter had a line, while the fully stocked Seafood Counter Had No Wait.

For Many Kinds of Goods, You Can Expect Supplies to Become More Steady and Reliable As the Coronavirus Crisis Continues, As Manufacturers Ramp Up Production. Clorox Expects to be meeting the increses Demand for Disinfectant Wipes by Summer. But Meat Supply Disruptions are Likely to Persist as Long As Meat-Processing Facilities Are Vulnerable to Coronavirus Outbreaks. Tyson Foods Has Told Investors to Expections Disruptions in Its Ability to Supply Meat and Poultry for the RESS FISCAL YEARWhich Runs Through September 30. SO it May Be Worth Brushing Up on Those Seafood and Vegorian Recipes if you plan to cooking at home this summer.

Where are all the three-bedroom apartments?

    Photo-illustration: Curbed; Photos: Getty

Nat Serarano, an App Developer, Lives in an Upper West Side One-Bedroom With his Wife and Three Young Kids. Their Current Arrangement-A Five-Way Share of an Alaskan King-Can Only Last SO Long. “I Cannot Sleep With My Kids Forever,” he Says. They’ve been searching for a three-bedroom in the neighBorhood, but are all’ve seen in their price is awkwardly carved up and about the SIZE Current 750-Square-Foot apartment. “We can pay up to $ 5,000 a month, but there’s not.” He tells me. “Its impossible.” Three years in, a three-bedroom in a fourth-floor walk-up on 82nd and amsterdam that they turned down early in their search Haunts Him: “We Should have Taken it.”

In New York City, TRUE THREES ARE RARE AND COUNTED. They’ve always been elusive, but never have the pickings been so Slim – or expensive – brokers say. Most of what’s out there is to be a one- or two- bedroom chopped up to accommodate a Third (The New Kitchen Unit Awkwardly Tacked onto the Wall of an Already Small Living Room is a Dead Giveway) or Luxury New Builds. Anyone with a halfway decent three-bed-that is, an apartment is actually, propperly Large, swimming excessively partitioned-isn’t giving it up. That leaves family like the sereranos in the purgatory apartment.

Several trends have brought us here. In terms of demand, the actual three-bedroom that offers more space and not just just just rooms at a very particular nexus in the City’s Real-Estate hierarchy: Highly Saught by Families in General, but a White Whale for Affluent-Parents what can’t Afford an $ Slope Duplex or the interest on the $ 2 million fixer-upper uptown. “All the People who’d otherwise like to buy, they’re staying put,” Sayys Noble Black, an Associate Broker at Douglas Elliman. The Old Pressure-Release Valve of the Family Exodus to the Suburbs has Also Broken Down: An extramely tight Suburban-Housing Market means that many who’d like to leave are staying in the city, at least for now. Your Neighbor Putting Their Dream of Moving to New Rochelle on Hold is part of the Reason You Can’t Take Over Their Lease and Why the couple down the scorpecting their first kid can’t take Over your two-bedroom. “All Those Areas of the Housing Market Trickle into Each Other,” Sayys Black. “It ‘a sticking point.”

Three-BEDROMS HAVE Long Been Hard to Find, Sayys Julie Rhinehert, of Corcoran, But in the past Brooklyn Budyers Wauld Go A Two-Bedroom to A Townhouse. Now TownHouses Trade for $ 2.5 million and Up (and That’s a Gut Renovation in Most NeighBorhods), and A Nicery renovated place in park slope Goes for $ 7 million or more. One of Rhinehert’s Clients Got Fed Up With LoSing Out in Six- and Seven-Person Bidding Wars for Three-Bedrooms and THOUGHT’D SOLVED THEIR PROBLEM A $ 1.7 Million Townhouse in Prospects that needed a total gut reno. “They were so excited. They were just like, ‘we can get this house,’” She Says. The House Got 26 Offers in One Week.

And really, there were never many bigger apartments out there to be with. “Do you three-beedroom is super rare, super rare,” Says Lisa James, a Corcoran Agent Who Works in South and Central Brooklyn. MANY of the Older Rent-Stabilized Three-BEDROMS haven’t tourned over in decades-life circumstances Like or kids flush residency out of studios and one-bedrooms, but people on to threes-and say that died in years past Into Smaller, Separate Units. (When it is comes to stabilized apartments, there’s the also of zero incentive for someone 1,000 a month to downsize to a more expensive unit.)

Three-BEDROM Rentals Only Account for About 9.7 Percent of New Manhattan Leases, Accounting to Jonathan Miller, of Miller Samuel, Up from ARUND 4.5 Percent in the late 1990s. But Leasing Only Reflects What’s in Circulation, Not What Exists, and the Assumption is a lot of the better units, like the stabilized three-beds, aren’t Changing Hands Much. A DECENT AMOUNT OF THAT GROWTH, AT LEAST GIVE WHAT DOES HIT THE MARKET, ALSO SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM faux Three-Beds. ITH’S NOT ALL CHEP REMODELS – New Construction, especally when it is a rental going for a somewhat attinable price, is offten with the Square Footage. (“A lot of say don’t feel Like three bedrooms, “a broker tells me.) and thatn, of Course, there’s the ultra high-new construct-a press release that made the rounds that year trumpeted $ 25,000-onth three-beds.

The Lack of Three-Beds is Also at Least Partially an Affordable-Housing Issue-As High Rents Continue to Make Living Alone Proxensive For MANY, Single People Opt for Shares, and Together, with Three InComes, Are To Pay a Lot of Family. Manage. AFFORDable-Housing Advocates, Meanwhile, Frequently Complain that Housing Mostly Offer Studios and One-Beds, WHICH ARE CHEEPER FOR DEVELOPERS TO BUILD, RATHER THAN LARGER APPLICATIONS threes). or Gothamist Analysis Found that 70 Percent of the Affordable apartments Built Under Mayor Eric Adams Were Studios and One-Beds.

SO the market-rate three-bed is out of the reach and the affordable one essentally nonexistant. In Manhattan, The Average Three-BEDROM Rental Price was $ 8,737 in March, Accounting to Douglas Elliman. In brooklyn, it was $ 4,818, Although a streeteasy search in that price point Pulled up a lot of divvied-up Older apartments in neighborhoods like Flatbush and East New York and Basement-Level Duplexes in Gerssend and Bensonhurst. The most alluring stuff, in prime brownstone neighborhoods Close to transit and in-Demand School Districts, tendes to go for significa: a cobble hill brownstone duplex three-bedroom sublet. “The $ 5,000-to- $ 7,000-A-Nont Price Point? Oh there’s Nothing,” Says One Manhattan Broker.

None of this surprised the renters of spoke with, whose experiences has already confirmed as much. One Woman Living in A $ 3,500-A-Wait Two-Bed in Morningside Heights and Described As “Dark, With A Cockroach Issue” Told with She was looking for More Space on a $ 4,500-A-Month Budget a place with a guest room for her). A Broker She’d Reached Out to That Morning Had Sent Over Some Lisings, Including One For An Apartments in the Building Next that was identical to hers, except that it was carved up into bedroms instead of two. A recent post on an upper west Side Facebook Group from Someone Hoping for A $ 3,500 Three-Bed for June 1 was with Pity and Disbelief. “Highly Unlikly,” one person replied. “Espely on the uws.” “Staten Island?” One Suggested. “Wold you consider one?” anoter asked.

“I Think People Are Struggling to Find Something Better than What They Have,” Sayys Paul Campbell, A Communications Consultant who was living in a two-bedroom in downtown brooklyn with his wife and son being Covid Hit. Like a lot of People, he and his wife started working from home a lot, their Son tourned 13, and the apartment of shared space started to feel cramped. But their two-begged apartment, which had a double-decker terrace they’d built out with a pergola and an appricot tree, was just so much nicer than they are. “My Wife Wold Take me on these onsee and it was like, ‘we can affford this, but it is Horrible, Everything Creaks and It Smells,’” Campbell Says.
