  • US Employers Could offshore Jobs Rather than Paying H-1b Visa Fees

US Employers Could offshore Jobs Rather than Paying H-1b Visa Fees

The Higher Price Tag for Coveted H-1b Visas Might Drive Up Employers’ Costs, But Not Necessarily Their Appetite for US Workers.

That’s one Possible Result of the Trump Administration’s Recent Decision to Raise the Cost of These Special Visas, Meant for Skilled Workers That Employers Can’t Find in the US, to $ 100,000, Researchers Who Study the Issue Told Business Insider.

Faced with Higher Costs to Bring in Foreign Workers, Some US Firms Could Look Oversseas for Remote Workers before they Turn to domestic ones. That woldn’t be great news for the us Job Market.

On top of that, if the overall us Economy is weakened by a drop in skilled foreign workers – and innovation more broadly – that cououl us grown and cut demand for a range, these experts said.

That Waled Run Counter to the Aims of President Donald Trump, who said the changes are to push emptyers to Hire US Workers than International Ons.

The President’s Actions Discourage Companies From “Spamming the System and Driving Down American Wages,” White House Spokesperson Taylor Rogers Told Business Insider in an Email.

“No ‘Economic Study’ Can Change the Reality Lived by MANY Americans Across the Country Who Bore the Massive Abuse of the H1-B System,” Rogers Said.

The Changes to H-1b Visas Will Likely Ripple Through the Economy Becouse, Right Now, US Employers Are Bringing in Up to 85,000 International Workers A Year the program.

Business insider spoke with five labor market observers about the impact of the fee hikes.

    Do Boost to offshoring

Most Research suggests that companies don’t respond to Visa restrictions by Hiring More Local Workers, Britta Glennon, An Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Told Business Insider.

Some US Multinational Companies are already USSINIST STRATEGIES TO OFFSHORE Jobs, Said. With the Latest H-1b Changes, “they’re just going to intensify that,” Glennon Said.

“Unless there is a strong Need for say to be in the us, they’re probably going to try to offshore,” She said, reference to multinational firms.

Glennon Found fore for Every H-1b Visa That Large US Companies with Oversseas Operations Didn’t Get, They Hirhed About 0.4 Workers Abroad. For the firms that were al -ends set up to favor those oversseas operations, the ratio rose to about 0.9.

If Companies will hire more US Workers, it’s offen not a one-to-ion ratio for every h-1b visa that’s Lost, Glennon Said.

How Foreign Workers Affect Local Demand

Casual Observes often assumers that there is a fixed set of jobs in the us, Said Glennon. Instead, what offen plays out we forens a workshore in the US is that it is the emploment grasses the presence of the foreign workers added demand in the economy.

That, ultimately, can lead to an increse in overall Employment Rather than a SCENARIO WHERE A Foreign Employe Simply Takes A Role That Have otherwise Gone to a US Worker.

“There’s Sort of a multiplier going on here,” Glennon Said.

She Said the H-1b Changes Are Likely to Dispropportationly Hurt Employers Such As Startups and Universities. They won’t have the same resources to computete with tech or big financial institutions, for example, which tend to relay on H-1bs.

Break wage media For H-1b Workers Was $ 120,000 As of Late 2024, Accounting to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, A Federal Agency. That’s roughly double the Pay media of all US workers.

Madeline Zavodny, An Economics Professor at the University of North Florida, Told Business Insider that if US Employers Bring in Fewer H-1b Workers, That Could Demand for Role Support Those-People in Hr, Marketing, and Other It.

“Americans Should Be Very Concerned,” Zavodny Said.

Zavodny Said that for Some Early-Career, but not entry-level workers, HAVE ABITY TO SWAP IN OTHER US Employees when they can’t get h-1b visas. For Other Workers, Zavodny Said, The Visa DOESN’T TE TO TAKE US WORKERS WOULD BE LIKELY TO FILE AND INSTTEAD LEADS TO MORE HARING OVERALL.

Wharton’s Glennon Said That Extensive Research Shows that Skilled Immigrants Punch Above Their Weight It Comes to Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

One Review Found that, As of 2025, Some 46% of Fortune 500 Companies were founded by immigrants or their children.

Trying to get Companies to Hire US WORKERS RATHER THAN THE ONES WHO SKILLED – REGARDLESS OF WHERE THEY COME FROM – RISKS DAMAGING THE COUNTRY’S Competitiveness in Areas Like Innovation, Steven Durlauf, Who Runs the Center for Reseearch on Wealth and Onheat University of Chicago, Told Business Insider.

    Changing the program

Not all observers see risk from the new h1-b setup. Ronil Hira, an Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at Howard University, Said Other Recent Changes ENACTED BY Trump, Including an Efffort to Ensure Employers Are Complying with Rules for H-1b Visas, Will Improve the Skill, Wages, and Working Conditions. in the h-1b program. That Wold Ultimately be a Win for the US Economy and Its Workers, he Said.

Hal Salzman, A Rutgers University Professor of Planning and Public Policy, Said That The H-1b Program Offen Brings in Workers Who Will Accept Below-Markt Wages.

He Told Business Insider That Salaries Have Been Generally Flat for About Two Decades in Areas Where Workers Are Concentrated. SALZMAN DOESN’t Expect that H-1b Restrictions Will Result in Companies Shifting IT Jobs Offshore, For Example, If Doing So Could Reduce ‘Labor Costs.

“If they Could have done it, they would have done 20 years ago,” He Said, Refring to Large US Companies. Ins house, Salzman Said, some offshore companies have expanded their workforces in the us.

One Reason Its Not Easy to OffShore, Salzman Said, is that in Order to Make Operations Work, Employers offten Need Roughly One-Third of their workers in the us. That means it places a practical limit on the Share of workers that a company couuld item Elsewhere.

Zavodny, from the University of North Florida, Said, Howver, that the $ 100,000 Price Tag Push Some Organizations to Look Abroad.

“That’s a lot of Money for Worker,” She Said.

  • The Messy History Bebind Your Favorite McDonald’s Order

The Messy History Bebind Your Favorite McDonald’s Order

This is an adapted excerpt from “Consumed: How Big Brands Got US HOOKED ON PLASTIC“by Saabira Chaudhuri.

McDonald’s has relief on Disposable Packaging SINCE 1948. Thats wen richard and maurice mcdonald all the watersses at their mcdonald Brothers Burder Drive in Restaurant in San Bernardino, California.

They Rolled Out an Entirely New Model of Serving Food Designed to Be High-Volume, Very Cheap, and Very Fast. Central to the new way of working was replacement the silverware and china plates with disposable bags, cups, and plates made from Paper.

By Getting Consumers to JUST THROW CUPS AND OTHER PACKAGING AWAY, The McDonald Brothers Neatly Rid Thermves of the Cost and Hasle of Washing and Drying of Pieces of Dishware Day. When Ray KROC BUGHT the Rights to Franchise McDonald’s Nationwide, he naturally followed the Same model, and McDonald’s Became One of the Larger Users of Paper Packaging in America.

But the Paper Containers Didn’t Retain Heat Well, and Through the 1960s, Worlds About Deforestation Mounted. Studies Showed That Paper Made Up As Much As 60% of US Highway Litter and Half of What People Threw Away in Big Cities. In Large Part to ALAY ENVIRONMENTAL Concerns, McDonald’s Decidated to Switch Away from Paper to Plastic Containers For Its Big Macs. On September 22, 1975 McDonald’s Rolled Out The Polystyrene Clamshell Container Acoss the US.

The polystyrene kept food hot, was easy to layer sandwiches in and, crucially, was cheap. A Decade Later, McDonald’s Launched the Double Clamshell to House a New Burger, Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich it Called the McDLT. The Company’s Hard-Charging US President ed Rensi poured an estimated $ 100 million into advertising it in the first few months of its launch.

The Sandwich in Its Fancy New Container was a hit. But a Few Years late, McDonald’s Found itelf Under Fire.

An estimated 3,000 tons of polystyrene were ending up in north american trash can and activists and lawmakers Increasingly saw mcdonald’s as emblematic of a convenience culture that spiraling out of control. Suffolk County in New York and Berkeley, California Had Passed Bans on polystyrene, while legislatures in 26 US STATES WERE BANNING OR Restrining Foam Containers.

The Allegation that McDonald’s was destroying naturally started to get picked up by the press. “It was a nightmare for us,” Says Shelby Yastrow, Who Served As General Counsel from 1978 to 1998 and at the time was Also the Company’s Environmental Head. “I WOULD Go to Cocktail Parties or Friends’ Homes for Dinner and That’s the first Thing That Wauld Always Come Up.”

The Company Arged, Head-Scratchingly, That Havinging Its Clampshells-Four Billion of which Were Discarded Annually-Sitting in Landfill Was a good Since Helped “aeate the soil.” To push through legislatures’ Escape Clauses, McDonald’s Exploited A Loophole: Recycling. As Long As Companies Could show That foam was being recycled, legislators indicated they’d allow it.

The person in charge of McDonald’s Clamshell Recycling EFFORTS WAS A CURLY-HAIRED, TOWERING 33-YEAR-OLD NAMED BOB LANGER. Growing up in the 1960s in South Side Chicago, Langert Had Harbored A Quiet Fascination with Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy. For as long as he could remember, he’d wanted to do something to “Change the World.”

His moment came in 1988. “My jab was very specific: to be to the polystyrene clamshell by development a recycling program for it,” Recalls Langert.

Telling Customers to Recycle was an Easy and inexpensive marketing strategy. But getting People to Fastidiously Separate Their Thick and Empty Their Food Was Was Hard. McDonald’s tracked How Diners Behaved and Estimated that, at best, a Third of Customers RecyCled Correctly.

Langert Cringes as he remains Visiting Recycling Plants in Brooklyn and Leominster, Massachusetts. Stinking Garbage Trucks ostensibly Delving Empty Clamshells Unloaded Rotting Food and Used Paper Napkins. “By the time it got transported to the recycling center, it smelled like High Heaven and was very Attractive to vermin,” he tells.

McDonald’s tracked How Diners Behaved and Estimated that, at best, a Third of Customers RecyCled Correctly.

The resulting Quality was so poor that rubbermaid and others who has had them’d tour the used polystyrene into trays and waste baskets refused to buy it.

Despite All This, McDonald’s Trumpeted Its Recycling Efforts. In 1990, A Six-Page Booklet Called “McDonald’s and the Environment” Began Showing Up in the Chain’s Outlets Acoss the Country. It described polystyrene as “Following in the footsteps of highly recycled materials Such as Glass and Aluminum” and “The Only Fodservice Packaging That Is 100% Recyclable and Is Being RecyCled.”

Yastrow Hirhed A for Consultant Known for Helping Companies Neutralize Criticism From Environment. Charles Yulish Advised McDonald’s to Make Sweeping Recycling Pedges and Form Highly Publicised Alliances with Reputable Nonprofits. “He Said, ‘Show You’re Green. You have to be proactive,”‘ Recalls Yastrow.

Yastrow took the Advice, publicly pledging that before the tour of the Century there be a recycled mcdonald’s restaurant with countertops, seats, and floating made from recycled plastics (there wasn’t), and that 1992 all the chain RECYCLE Their polystyrene.

In August 1990, McDonald’s Teamed Up With the NonProfit Environmental Defense End in A Wide-Ranging Waste-Reducing Partnership. AT YULISH’S URGING, MCDonald’s Also Struck an Alliance with the World Wildlife End, Paying $ 1 million to End A Magazine for Schoolchildren Featuring the WWF Logo plugged the Fast-Food Chain’s Environmental Activities and Defieded Its of Polystyene. It was the Larger Educational Program for Schools at the TIME, Reaching 5 million Teachers and Students.

Looking back, Langert Says that some of what McDonald’s was doing would be benwashing. “We were creating all these programs and police gocauses now we were at the forefront of being characterized as bearing for the environment,” he Says. “We were desperate to find a way to get the credibility to get this monkey off our back.”

It was Halloween 1990 and Langert Had just stumbled ACOSS A DRAFT PRESS RELEASE ANNOUNCING THAT MCDonald’s Polystyrene Recycling Program Waul Out to All the Company’s 8,500 Restaurants Nationwide.

A year after the leominster plant has Opened, About two-thirds of what was Coming in from Restaurants was Food and Other non-polystyrene waste. By now, Langert was firmly convinced there was no Way McDonald’s Could Make Recycling Work. “The testing was going horribly,” he says. “I was shocked that they would would this.”

He Found Yastro, Laying Out to the General Counsel Why McDonald’s Couldn’t Justify the Two Recycling Operations It Was Involved in, Let Alone Expanding the Program. Yastrow Had Harbored His Own Reservations About Recycling Polystyrene for Months. The Big Hurdle That Remained was Rensi.

Yastrow Phon Fred Krupp, Head of the Edf, Who Got HIS Lead Toxicologist on a Call with Rensi. She explained How the International Agency for Research on Cancer Had Recently Classified Styrene As “Possibly Carcinogenic.” There was some evidence showing that styrene oxide was Cancerous in animals, which Indicated it might have a simillar impact on human beings. The toxicologist minced no Words in explaining that she thught recycling polystyrene was a Very Bad Idea.

For Rensi, after years of staffly defense his precious container, the allegation that it could have Cause Cancer Went too. “That was the Straw that broke the Camel’s Back,” Says Langert.

The Next Morning, McDonald’s for Department Did Out A Press Release, but not the One Langert Had Found. Instead, in a shock move, it announced it would abandon the clamshell.

Rather than Admit Defeat on Environmental OR HEALTH GROUNDS, RENSI CYTH AN EMOTIONAL REASON FOR THE SHIFT. “ALTHOUGH Some Scientific Studies Indicate that foam Packaging is environmentally sound, Our customers JUST DON’T FEEL ABOUT IT,” He Told Reporters.

McDonald’s Didn’t Consider Returning to Washable Containers. Instead, the Company swapped the clamshell for the Disposable Waffle-Patterned Paper Sandwiched on Eoth Side of A Sheet of Low-Density Polythylene. In other words, it was plastic layered with Paper and Very Hard to Recycle.

McDonald’s Scored a Huge Public Relations Win. “Let’s Hope More Companies Copy McDonald’s EFFORT,” Enthussed The Seattle Post-Intelligency. “McDonald’s is at Last Showing Some McSense on the Environment,” Wrote a New York Times that Story was titled “Greening of the Golden Arch.”

In Time, McDonald’s Switched to a Cardboard Box that can technically be recycled. But in reverting to Paper, the material it abandoned gcauses of Concerns About Deforestation, McDonald’s May Have Tradition One Single-Use Problem for Another.

In reverting to Paper, the material it abandoned gcauses of Concerns About Deforestation, McDonald’s May Have Tradition One Single-Use problem for another.

My Reporting – Which Includes Interviews With McDonald’s Executives and Staff as well as Waste Companies and Paper Mill Operators – Shows that McDonald’s is Still Struggling to Convince for Fast Food to Slows. Recyclers don’t want Paper Packaging with Food in It Sine This Degrades the Fibers and Can Contamine the Mill’s Water Supply. Paper that goes to landfills can break down to release Methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

McDonald’s Own Research Several Years Ago Showed That Customers Simply Bundled in the Paper Bag their Came in So They Couw all in a single bin. Ascing say to separate picles and soggy teabags from Paper containers Landed Badly.

“People were quite angry about Having to do it,” Helen McFarlane, Sustainability Manager for McDonald’s in the uk told me. “That’s Though People Come in and They Eat with their Hands – there are no knives and forks or anything – when they go to the bins, they don’t want to touch their food.”

Today, Recycling Remains McDonald’s First Line of Defense – EITS SHIELD AGAINST LAWS THAT WOUL OR TAX THROWAWAY PACKAGING, OR FORCE IT TO THE REUSABLE CONTAINERS The MCDonald Brother Cast 1948.

  • Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas Was Perfect for Anniversary Trip

Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas Was Perfect for Anniversary Trip

    • My husband and i are avid cruisers, but we’d never sailed on a mega-dollar unil recently.
    • We Went ABOARD Royal Caribbean’s 10,000-Person Star of the Seas for Our 20th Wedding Anniversary.
    • I’d Recommend a Large Cruise Ship for a romantic getaway for a variety of reasons.

My husband and i have been taching cruises for years, so as our 20th wedding anniversary appracess, we decided to book a three-night aboard royal caribbean’s newest Ship, Star of the seas, to mix things up. The 10,000-Person vessel, which no it sister ship, icon of the seas, is nothing lot of massive and was unlike any cruise we’d as die-char fans of the Midsize disney cruises and smalle expedition voyages.

I WASN’T SURE WHATER SAILING AWAY WITH 10,000 People was the best way to celebrate Such a milestone. I wondered whether we’d be able to connect as a couple with more than 7,000 passengers and nearly 3,000 Crew Members Surrounding US. And, nor an introvert, I worried i’d be stressing out and grumpy on Such a People-FILEED SHIP. Turst out, everything about the trip was perfect for celebrating a wedding anniversary, right down to the ocean balcony suite we stayed in, which Cost under $ 700 a night for the two of us.

Here’s why we love Celebrating Such a Romantic Event ABOARD A MEGE-Ship.

The Ship was huge, but we have still found Quiet Spots to Spend Time Together.

A view overlooking the central atrium of a mega-shop.
Despite the Size of the Ship, The Author and Her Husband Found Quiet Spots to Relax. Courtesy of Terri Peters

Our Cruise Ship Was Huge, with 20 Decks, About 50 Different Bars and Restaurants, Pools and a Water Park, tons of Every Everynding from an escape room to an Ice rhink. Strangely, it washn’t hard to get the lay of the Land. Once Acclimated to the Ship, we start MAKING A LIST OF RESTAURANTS WE WANTED TO TRY, SHOWS WE HOPED TO SEE, and Activities we wanted to participate in.

While there is was plenty of hustle and bustle, we quickly found places we coulu Escape to, Such as Secluded deck areas or a coffee bar we like, where we kew things were quieter and we’d be ab to rob a spice two with an ocean view. In fact, neother of us remembers a time when the Crowds felt overwhelming or like they were hatsing our romantic vibe.

Our days were a perfect mix of sunny public areas and intentional downime.

A private beach with Palm Trees and Hammocks.
They Enjoyed Beautiful, Sunny Days. Courtesy of Terri Peters

We filled out days on board sunning by the pool, participating in trivia games, and eating at as many different restaurants as we are. Eight in Crowded Areas, Such As Restaurants or Pool Decks, we found it Easy to Stick to Ourselves and Reconnect as a couple.

What’s More, Our Stateroom Had Its Own Balcony and Plennery of Room Inside, SO we were always able to head back for AFTHNOON NAP OR TO RELAX while showering for dinner. And, Most Evenings, We Found Ourslves Watching an On-Demand Movie Together in Bed before Falling Asleep.

We loved how, at Night, The Ship Felt Like a Bustling City.

People performing at a jazz Club on Board A Cruise Ship.
At Night, They Saw Comedy and Ice Skating Shows, and They Enjoyed Going to A Jazz Club AFTER DINNER. Courtesy of Terri Peters

One of Our Favorite Things About Traveling is Getting Dressed Up Each Night and Heading Out on the Town. Becuse the Extra-Large Ship Felt Like A City, Each Night Was like We were Vaciation Somewhere Metropolitan.

Whether Dressing Up for A Fancy Dinner Followed by Drinks at A Jazz Club or Eating A Quick Dinner before Seeing A Comedy Show and Catching A Band, Each Night Felt We were Out on a Date Together. As a bonus, neohere of US struggled with ideas for what to do on our night out the options were endless.

Nor a sober person, of the Found Plenal of Nonalcoholic drinks that felt celebratory.

The author Drinking non-alcoholic wine aboard the start of the seas.
There are well of nonalcoholic options aside from juice and die sodas for the author. Courtesy of Terri Peters

I’ve been living an alcohol-free lifestyle for nearly two years, but that doesn’t mean i don’t goit a festive drink to celebrate with. I was blown away by the nonalcoholic offers on the ship, from boosa-free wines on every restaurant menu to unique motails at each bar.

Having something sparkly in my glas Made Our Anniversary Trip Feel Extra-Festive, and i Never Once Like I Was Stack Only Drinking Diet or Club Soda while on the Ship.

I’d Definitely Recommend a mega-Ship for an anniversary celebration.

The author and her husband in front of a sunset backdrop.

My Husband and I Both AGREE: we’d definitely reCommend a mega-dollar for a celebration like anniversary. Sura, it’d also be great for birthdays or bachelorette party, where People are looking to party hard in a big group, but as a couple who wanted to be alone together, we never felt overwhelmed while on Board.

I OFTEN SAY I LIKE CRUISING BECAUSE EVERING IS PLANNED OUT FOR YOU WITH MUCH EFFORT ON YOUR PART, AND THIS SHIP WAS NO EXPETIENCE. Being able to relax all day with my husband and then go out “on the town” each night with the trip the trip all the special, and we Truly felt reconnected when we are descent.
