  • Paul Mescal & Josh O’Connor in Love

Paul Mescal & Josh O’Connor in Love

On Questionnaires for Movie Research Screenings they Always KAS “Choose Words that best describe the film.” Okay, here are the Words I Wold Write Down to Best Encapsulate the New Film The history of sound WHICH HAD ITS World Premiere Tonight in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival: Meditative. Beautiful. Musical. Reflective. Heartbreaking. Love. Quiet. Soothing. Life affirming. Haunting. Tasteful. Adult. Unforgettable.

The title makes it sound Rather Academic, but it is Certainly isn’t that. More pointedly spreads it should have been cald The Sound of Music, But i Think Somebody Already Had that. Okay, How About The Sounds of Music? Actually the title they have fits perfectly once you get to the end, but will it sell tickets? That is the problem for the Distributor (Mubi in North America; Universal/Focus Features International), but the film itself, directly by oliver hermanus and worn by ben Shattock from the short story, delivers. Hermanus Also Did The Terrific Remake of Kurosawa’s Living, and he has made a quietly masterful love Story here continging a wonderful lead performance from paul mescal and an equally fine supporting turn by josh o’connor. It Simply Envelopes You Into Its Unique World and Washes Over You With A Songbook of America, and a Lyrically Haunting Gay Love Story at Its Center, that describes that person will always be great, no matter had much.

Set in 1917, Music Students David (O’Connor) and Lionel (Mescal) Find Mutual Love of Folk Music at the Boston Conservatory One Night and It Becomes the Start of a Beautiful Friendship, and Later Love Affoir, be after serving in worl war i david rurns and summons Join Him on What Is Called A “Song Colecting” Walk Through Maine’s Backwoods in Order to Collect and Preserve in Cylinders Folk Songs Might Not Ever Been Heard Unless They Went Knocking on These Rural Households Where Authenticity Lies. This Relationship Also Finds The Falling in Love in A Surpringly Casual Way Unusual for the Times. It was meant to be and it was a life-altering trip, but after it was over of ther lives Changed. Lionel Went Back to University in the UK, David Stayed Behind. Despite Writing Several Letters and Getting Nothing Over the Course of Two or Three Years, Lionel Wauld Never Hear David Again – or so he Thinks.

In the Meantime Lionel Gets Serious With A College Student, Clarissa (A Spirited Emma Canning), Who Encoures Him to Keep Going at University. But when the word reaches Him that his mother (Molly price) is dying he announces he is go Back to kentucky where he is from, and swimming back. Soon he will Discover Some Startling Truths As The Music Comes Back Into HIS Life.

Deliberately Paced and Gorgeously Shot by Alexander Dynan, The history of sound May Unfold Slowly But Give It A Chance and It Will Wrap You Up and Take You Places Movies don’t offten Go These Days. I realized watching this how few of these movies there are now in a time that doesn’t wanting to finance Like Malick’s Days of heaven WHICH IS WHAT THIS REMINDED WITH THE TERMS OF VISUAL SUMTUOUSNESS AND PACE.

Musical It is a wonder, with bot o’connor, and especialy midcal, proving they have the pipes to pull off a soundtrack of American folk obscurities that make this a must-have download. Lyrically the songs tell stories of everything from the masonry to love to morality to everyday emotions and feelings, and have been spectacularly arranged by famous artist Sam Amidon, who specializes in this area. “Sweet is the day of Sacred Rest,” “Forked Deer,” “The Unques Women,” “Fourteen Wildcat Scalps” and “Across the Rocky Mountain” are just a sampling of titles, but the collect of this music sweepsy you away directly inters. takeen.

This May Be Mescal’s Best Work in Films Yet. You just ache for this guy who found the great love of his life only to let Him slrough his hands with the quite knowing it. His performance, Like O’Connor’s, Whose Character is Ever-Present with Far Time, is Nicery Understated and All the More Effective for it. Both serve up haunting portrayals. Chris Cooper Turs up Near the End of the Film to Play a Much Older Version of Lionel and is quite Moving. Hadley Robinson Also Makes a Strong Impression in One Key Skene Where A Lot of Revelations Occur. Ultimately, The history of sound Belongs to Mescal and O’Connor, Who Both commuted to it pre-Pandemic well before Became oscar-nominated and emmy-twinning major stars. They Stuck with it Through all the delays and should be reeded for their loyalty to hermanus, who has made a movie that will will be in your head for a very long time. It’s good.

Producers are Lisa Couffetti, Hermanus, Andrew Korschak, Sara Murphy, Thérèsa Ryan and Zhang Xin.

Cannes 2025 Strong on Debuts, Long on Ovations, Short on Surprises

The Cannes Film Festival proved itelf to be strong on resilience this year, but short on Big Surprises.

Dial Back to 1985: “What am i doing here?” Asced Clint Eastwood, Whose French Hosts SEEMED PUZZLED THAT THE COWBOY STAR WAS ALSO BECOMING AN ARVITIOUS AUTEUR. Fest Cinephiles Were Stingy on Ovations for HIS New Movie Outlaw Josey Walesand the Media Fired Rude Questions – “Who Are You Sleeping With?” was the first. They Also Mocked Josey’s Heroic Line: “When Things Get Bad, Get Mean.”

Eastwood Never Needed to “Get Mean.” He was thrilled by the films he saw and by the intense compattition. “It ‘a whorehouse of sales,” he said. A decade late and was invited to be jury chairman.

Eastwood’s Lively Journey exemplified the festival’s habit of touring to us stalwarts when “Things Get Bad.” Tom Cruise’s Eighth Iteration of Mission: Impossible this year controlled much Needed pizzazza to the fest, which lacked the usual manic promotions. And wes Anderson Fourth Fest Entry, The Phoenician Schemewith his familiar cast of characters, played like a cool and comfy revisit-one that mandated a 10-minute ovation. Benicio del Toro Heapeed thanks on Anderson for Casting Him in A Film in Which he dosn’t get killed – a rarity.

Cannes this year offend some heralded Debuts from Actresses: Kristen Stewart (The Chronology of Water) and Scarlett Johansson (Eleanor the Great) unveiled their first directing to appreciative reviops.

In addition to setting up the series, in its finals, the premiere serves the first of Paradis‘s many jaw-dropping twists.

Here is the script for “wildcat is down” with an intro by fogelman. In it, he reveals how a kernel of an idea he got more a decade ago from a loud construction noise his home from a business Meeting with a Powerful Hollywood Type Led to Paradise.

About a year after This is us Ended, I start her family to get off my ass and write something new for television. I MUED ON MULTIPLE Ideas But Kept Returning to A Specific Kernel of A Nottion – A Notion I’d Had Over A Decade Earlier.

The backstory: As a Much Younger Writer I Once Found MySelf in a General Meeting With A Powerful Player in Our Industry – A Person of Great Reach, Resource, and Wealth. Not even chatted with Him (or her, i’ll never tell) I was strucking by the design (and size) of their office, the seeringly infinite reach of their role and power. While that person talked to me, my mindhered and i start wondering if i was in the room with my first billionaire.

I start Musus How Many People Worked to Make That Person’s Life Run Smoothly.

I was Young (er), i was nervous, i don’t remember what we talked about.

But on the Drive Home, A Large Crane at A Nearby Construction site Dropped Something. There was a loud boom. I JUMED, THEN realized this wasn’t a mass casualty Event… SIMPLY A Loud Everyday Construction Noise.

THEN I THOUGHT ABOUT THE PERSON I’D JUST MET WITH – THIS PERSON OF SEEMINGLY UNDERTHLY WEALTH AND POWER. I though of all the People who worked to serve that person and i wondered: “if the sh*t ever the fan for real, wouldn’t those People all run to ther people? Waouldn’t they abandon them exployed to serve?

I started the thinking of the interplay of those in power and those who serve. I Started Imagining Someone Whose Job It was to literally take a bullet for a person in immense power – a Secret Service agent to a president. I Started Thinking About Billionaires, and the Strange Power Their Wealth Provides, and I Started Wondering … What If the Loud Boom I’d Had Been Real. And what if People with immics power know it was coming, and had the time to gather their resources and plan for it… so that it is happy, they would be left in the lurch like the rest of us.

I Started Imagining a Pilot with a Late Surprise – One that Revealed that the Presidential Murder Mystery the audience thought they were watching, was really something.

And thatn i Sat on the idea for over a decade.

But Fast Forward TEN OR SO YEARS, I WAS Getting That Post This is us Writing itch, and i returned to idea. I Wrote the Screenplay First, Refususing to AcknowLedge to MySelf That I Was Clearly Writing The Lead Agent for Sterling K. Brown, and Refususing to It As a Tv Series UNTIL I SAT MY PRODUCING JESS ROSENDTHAL AND MYO FRIENDS Writer/Producers) John Hoberg and Scott Weinger to Chat with Experts and Figure Out What Exactly This Series Was Beyond The Pilot.

Once i had that, we shared it with our supportive partners at 20th, dissney, and hilu – and then my old pals sterling K. Brown, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, and Steve beers – and we were off to the races… Born out of a Meeting with a rich guy (or gal) and one hell of a loud boom.

Flores kitmán Says their Citizenship Applications are higher in 2025 After ticking up slightly in the three prior years. • Less than Half of CPS Schools Have Herd Immunity From Measles, State Data Shows

Less than Half of CPS Schools Have Herd Immunity From Measles, State Data Shows

Delisa New Williams Remembers when Measles Spread like Wildfire Through Her Elementary School. One Day, a Kid was Out Sick. Then suddenly Everyone was infected, including her.

“It knocked out the which classroom,” Williams, 41, Said. “And then it was moving on to the Next.”

That was in the early 1990s in the midst of a massive, nationwide measles outbreak that lasted from 1989 to 1991. Tens of thusands of People were infected, and dosens died. Chicago was hit hard – From 1989 to 1990, over 2,200 Children were infected, and 22 Died.

These days, Williams is worked for her own children and community. A SUN-TIMES Analysis Found Less Than Half of Chicago Public Schools are at a 95% Measles Vaccination Rate, the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Benchmark for Herd Immunity. Meanwhile, at Least Six Measles Cases in Illinois Have Been Confirmed Amid Worsening Outbreaks Elsewhere in Texas and New Mexico. Over 900 CASES HAVE BEEN REPORTED ACROSS 30 STATES.

“These babies just got through one pandemic, and we’re trying to make sura ou kids are acclimated and getting used to the coming Back to the Classroom,” Williams Said.

Before the Covid-19 Pandemic, 97% of Chicago Public Schools Overall Were Vaccinated Against Measles, One of Eight Vaccinations Required by the State. But as of the 2024-25 School year, that percentge has fallen to 93%, accorting to date from the illinois State Board of Education. Each October, Illinois Schools Submit Their Students’ Vaccination Numbers for That School Year to the State Board.

The CDC Says a Vaccination Rate of 95% provides communitywide immunity and Protects vulnerable students, like youunger children who have been to complete the series of shots, or Kids with Immune Systems.

The Sun-Time Analysis of State Data Found more tOUHLESOME TROUPS AT individual schooles. About 45% of CPS 644 Elementary, High Schools and Charter Schools Have Vaccination Rates at or Above 95% This Year. That’s down from the rate in 2019, the year before the pandemic, when 90% of schools were at herd immunity.

What’s More, Several Schools Dropped to 80% or Below. For Example, The Rate at Brennemann Elementary School in Uptown Went from 98% in 2019 to 69% in 2024. CPS DID MAKE BENNEMANN’S PRINCIPAL AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT. Ninety Schools Saw Their Rate Drop by 10% or More.

But not all schools are struggling. Several Are Close to Herd Immunity, 68 Schools Improved Their Rates, and Seven Keps Stable.

Dr. Ravi Jhaveri, The Division Head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Lurie Children’s Hospital, was alarmed by the drop. Measles is an extramely contagious dessease: one person with measles can Spread the virus to as many as 18 people. The transmission rate for fluout one to two people. Measles Can Also Be Fatal or Leave Someone With Severe and Long-Term Complications from the Illness.

“There are lots of Opportunities for Measles to Find Vulnerable People, and Is SO Contagious, Measles Will Find toy’f They’re Not Vaccinated,” Jhaver Said.

That’s why a 95% vaccination rate is crucial, Jhaver Said.

“Our children have missed out on so many years, and now they could have been more just make up on immunizations, ‘Said Williams, WHO HAS A FIRST GRANDER A. A. Neil element School in Chatham.

A CPS spokesperson did not dispropbe the sun-etes’ findings, but Said the District’s Most Recent “Internal Data” shows “95.6% of CPS students are Fully Protected Against Measles.

The distribution would not provides that internal data to the Sun-Times.

“Undersanding that National Declining Vaccination Coverage and Increasing Student Exeptions Wouuld Increase the risk for Vaccine-Preventable outbreaks,” the spokesperson said, the distribution developed a plan to prevent the declines in Vaccination Rates.

That plan, which the distribution said has HAS HELPED IMPROVE VACCINE COVERERGE DISTRICTWIDE, INCLUDES: Frequently Communicating with Parents and School Principals, Bringing Services to Schools with the Lowet Protection Rates and Helping with Documenting Immunization Records.

Chicago isn’t alone. Vaccination Rates Dropped Nationwide in the years of the height of the pandemic. Have Been Slowly Recovering, but not at A Rate Public Health Experts Say is Necessary for Strong Community Protection.

The Vaccination Rate Waned for Several Reasons, Experts Told the Sun-Times. Missinformation ARUND VACCINES INCREASED DURING The Pandemic and Continue to Flourish, And Covid-Era Disruptions to Regular Checkups Caussed Many Kids to Fall Beinde on Their Vaccine Schedules.

All States Allow Medical exemptions from mandated vaccinations. Illinois Allows Parents to Request a Religious exemption, but not for personal or Philosophical reasons. SINCE 2015, PARENTS MUST submit a signed “Certificate of Religious Exemption” Detailing Why They Declining Who Vaccines.

Upping the vaccination rate is the best way to prep for an Outbreak, Medical Professionals and Public Health Experts Say. And tan a modest uptick in Measles Vaccinations COULD PREVENT MILLIONS OF INFECTIONS, Acciting to New Research Spanning 25 Years of Vaccination Rate Data.

    ‘Just get the shot, ok?’

During the 2018-2019 School Year, Neil Elementary Was at A 97% Vaccination Rate for Measles. But that rate has dropped in the years SINCE, Going as Low As 80% in 2021-22 School Year.

“This is a parental respectibility we have to take on. It”s on us,” Said Williams, who is also the parent chair of her local School Council. “IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT PROTECTING OUR KIDS. WE DON’T THINK ABOUT THE SIBLINGS AT HOME, The Elders, the vulnerable these kids go home to.

    “JUST GET The Shot, Ok?”

The Illinois Department of Public Health Recently Unveiled a Measles Simulator Dashboard To track and monitor caes in real time as a part of the states away from the prepare for Measles outbreaks, a department spokesperson Said.

Several factors Can affect a School’s vaccination RATE, SAID JHAVER FROM LURIE CHILDREN’S. The State Consider A student as fully vaccinated against measles wey’ve haad bots of the mmr Vaccine, which covers Measles, mumps and rubella. The first dosa is usually gioven a child is 12 months to 15 months old. The Second Dose is Giveween BetWeen Ages 4 and 7. That First Dose Alone Gives 93% Immunity, and Two Doses Supply 97%.

    Table visualization

But many kids are bend on that vaccination schedule Becuses they missed regular checkups during the pandemic. At the time, doctors urged their patients to avoid visiting clinics in person to minimize the risk of Covid Spreading.

SINCE THEN, WAIT TIMES FOR APPOINTments at Clinics and Pediatric Offices Ballooned and Can Sometimes Take Monts, He Said. Patients on Medicaid in Particular Are Having a Tough Time Getting Appointments and Often have to Travel Far for Basic Like Annual Physicals and Vaccines.

“WE HAVE PATIENTS Traveling 30, 40 Miles to Lurie Just to Get Vaccines,” Jhaver Said.

Outbreaks generalyly happen to be an unvaccinated person Contracts measles while traversing abroad and brings it Back to the community. But with recent Large outbreaks in texas and new mexico, the risk of contracting measles while traversing in the us is higher, he said.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Head of the US Department of Health and Human Services, recently endorsed the mmr Vaccine, but has also stoked Vaccine Hesitancy for Years, Including During His 2024 President Campaign and Since Health SECTERYT.

“The public has increasing Hesitancy Around Vaccines. They’re Flooded with Missinformation; there’s Decreated Trust in the EstaBished Medical Systems,” Jhaveri Said.

Maria Diaz, A West Lawn Resident and Mom of Three, Isn’t Crazy About Vaccines. She’s partial to more natural approaches to health care, and she’s artificial foods and plastic as much as postible.

But she’s had all thre of her children vaccinated with the standard vaccines, the Including Measles. She Also Worldies About Say Getting Sick at School. Two of Her Kids Are at CPS Schools, Richard Henry Lee Elementary In West Lawn and Thomas Kelly College Pre in Brighton Park. Lee Elementary’s Vaccine Rate Stayed Around 98% From 2019 to 2025, while Kelly College Prep Dropped From 98% to 93%.

“I did have my kids vaccinated, bot Becuses it’s a Requirement at School, but Also Becusee Many of the Vaccines are Older, like the Measles Vaccine, so it been tested for Longer,” Diaz, 47, Said.

Said She’s not surprised that People are struggling to get checkups and vaccinations at their regular doctor. She recently tried sccheduling appointments with her kids’ pediatrician, and the Wait time was over six months.

    Bring the shots to school

Howard Ehrman, A forms Chicago Department of Public Health Deputy Commissioner, Said He Believes Vaccinating Kids in School Wauld Bring Rates Up. IT’S “An Access Problem,” he Said.

“Let’s not turn this into a blame the Victim Campaign,” Ehrman Said, Adding that many doctors have stopped offering in their offices.

Seventy Years Ago, Wen The Polio Vaccine Became Avoidable, Kids were Vaccinated at School, where they Likely Had a full-time school Nurse, Said Ehrman. But Since THEN, PUBLIC HEALTH EFFORTS LIKE MASS IMMUNIZATIONS HAVE MORE MORE PRIVATIZED, Affecting work-Class Families, Said Ehrman, WHO recently joined a News conference held by the People’s Networking on CPS to provide Vaccinations at Schools for Measles, Whooping COUGH, meningitis, pneumonia and other desses.

Under the Chicago Teachers Union 2019 Contract, CPS aggregated to Hire Full-time Nurses at Every School. And while “Significant Progress” has been made, Ehrman Said, there are still dosens of schools with full-time nurse. He’s ALSO Calling for CPS to Fill Its Chief Health officer Role, which has been vacant november.

A Chicago Department of Public Health Spokesperson Deferred to CPS on the Feasility of Implementing A School-Based Vaccination Program.

“CDPH HAS LONG SUPPERTED CPS IN VACCINATION EFFORTS FOR CPS Students, Including with On-Site Vaccining Events at CPS Schools, and we will Continue to participate Alongside Other Vaccine in CPS-LEVE VACCINATION EFFORTS,“ The Spokesperson Said.

A CPS Spokesperson Said the District Offers Several Ways for Students to Get Vaccinated at Schools or Partner Clinics. Cs Operates school-based and mobile clinics that offer Vaccinations and Physicals. Eligible Students Can Receive Free Vaccinations Through the Public Health Department of Immunization Program. SINCE November 2023, The District has partner with the Federal Program, Vaccines for Children, and Held Over 420 Vaccining Events at Several Schools.

AFTER The 1989-91 Outbreak, Mass Immunizations Efforts in Chicago and Nationwide Helped Tamp Down Measles Cases. The City’s Health Department, Working With the School District and the City Housing Authority, supplied free vaccines to schooles and housing projects. And by 2000, The US Declared Measles Eradicated from the Country.

“Are We Going to Be Proactive?” Ehrman Asced. “Or are going to Wait till we have another measles outbreak?”
