Driver killed after object crashed through his windshield on Dan Ryan is identified

A 45-year-old man who was killed when a large metal object smashed through his windshield while he was driving on the Dan Ryan Expressway has been identified.

Jackine L. Austin, 45, of the city’s West Side, was pronounced dead Monday at 5:44 am, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled.

Austin was driving at about 5:10 am. Monday in the southbound express lanes of the Dan Ryan at 29th Street when the object crashed through the windshield of his gray GMC Yukon SUV and crashed into a concrete wall, state police said.

The metal is believed to have come off a semitrailer with an intermodal container, state police said.

Meanwhile, state police are asking anyone driving in the area at the time of the crash, anyone who witnessed the crash, or anyone who may have dash camera footage of the incident or footage from the location near the time of the crash, to contact Illinois State Police special agents at 847-608-3200.
