This month, dance theater of Harlem hosted it annual vision gala, held at the historic ziegfeld ballroom in midtown. This year’s gala honored Darren Walker, the President of the Ford Foundation, with the Arthur Mitchell Vision Award, Presented by Decorated Film Director Duvernay, WHO LOOKED BEAUTIFUL IN HER GOWN. “Darren has always seen the beauty in the bold, the precision in the daring, the grace in the fight,” she said.
“Arthur Mitchell was indeed a revolutionary,” Said Walker in His Speech. “The idea that a black man, the first balanchine principal Dancer, Could Start His Own Company in Harlem.”
“From the Very Beginning, the Institute of Harlem Has Felt Like Home,” Said Love Pinto, A Young Student Currently Training With Theater Group. The theme of the Evening was “Boldly Forward,” and the Night Kicked off with a performance by the remarkable Company of Dancers at New York City Center. Friday’s performance consisted of Four Ballets, Woven with Remarks from Honoree Misty Copland, Executive Director Anna Glass, and Artistic Robert Garland.
Immediately after the performance, Guests Walked Across the Street to the Ziegfeld Ballroom for an Evening with Honors, A Live Auction ($ 132,000 was raissed), a multicours dinner, and dancing. —Scarlett Newman
