Daniella Kallmeyer’s sharply tailored wardrobe pieces top the shopping lists of editors at grounded and celebrities like Katie Holmes and Ayo Edebiri. Tonight, she’s up for American Womenswear Designer of the Year at the CFDA awards, an honor she’s earned after over a decade of developing her brand. “It’s been 13 years of building a solid and deep foundation, honing our craft, cultivating community, and establishing the brand’s unique value,” she tells grounded. “While the nomination for Womenswear Designer of the Year was a surprise, in many other ways it feels like just the leaves of a strong tree with deep, hidden roots.”
No matter the result, she’s pleased just to be nominated. “I think the mere fact that the ballot is write-in and the nominating guild is that of a broader community of buyers, stylists, designers, etc, the nomination already feels like success. I try to remind myself that I’m building a brand with longevity and heritage. Winning could certainly catapult us into recognition and validation, but it’s important to keep a long-term vision.”
Before launching her namesake line, Kallmeyer studied at the London College of Fashion and worked at Proenza Schouler and Alexander McQueen. Her clothes share a delicate balance between masculinity and femininity: leather jackets nipped at the waist, houndstooth wool capes, soft draped blouses, and striped tees that look just as good with trousers as they do with jeans. The pieces are not only polished but also effortlessly cool.
Daniella’s own personal style isn’t far from what we see in her own designs. But this fall, she says, she’s been experimenting more. “I was so inspired by them Very Ralph documentary, which I finally watched the night before the hearing of the nomination. I’ve been really into layering button-downs with a great statement coat. Sort of Annie Hall meets Annie, Get Your Gun with a refined Kallmeyer twist. I’m normally most comfortable in something classic and comfortable, but lately I’m drawn to vintage accessories that add a bit of romance to my wardrobe.”
Ahead, Daniella Kallmeyer shares 13 of her favorite things, from her go-to notebook to her signature scent.
Eaton Wool T-Shirt
“I’ve never had such a beautiful, light, and versatile top. It’s exactly what I need every time I’m dressing up a casual look or dressing down a formal one. I already own it in every color and plan to live in the long-sleeved ones when they come out for holiday.”

Lipstick Case
“You can choose from one of the really lovely colors and mix and match the refillable containers, which are as beautiful as jewelry.”

Tyler Suede Moccasin Loafers
“I have these in two colors and I wore them almost every day this summer until I had to have the suede professionally refreshed. They’re so comfortable and simple.”

Pocket Bristle Hair Brush
“Mason Pearson’s boar hair brush is arguably one of the best brushes out there. Try buying one at an old-school pharmacy; the graphic design on the packaging alone is worth the purchase. I store mine in its original box.”

Toulon Slouch Bag
“This new sac from our collection is my go-to item. The leather and craftsmanship are such magnificent quality, it feels like it elevates any outfit. The beautiful internal zip pouch also doubles as a little envelope clutch. I’d buy it in almost every color—the ‘spice’ color is a secret weapon to make any outfit less boring.”

Lana Eau de Cologne
“I discovered Santa Maria Novella at their flagship in Florence, where shopping for your perfect scent is like attending a royal feast of fragrances. I wear Lana, which is described as having notes of leather and cashmere. I can’t think of a more perfect balance.”

Pro Series Notebook
“I don’t think there’s anything more satisfying than writing on stone paper. This will change your journaling, to-do lists, and morning pages forever. You can go hard cover or soft cover, as long as it has blank pages.”

Vertigo Silver-Plated Large Caviar Set
“I love things for the home that inspire a sense of occasion. I have serious regret about leaving behind a vintage caviar dish at the flea market in Paris, but this Christofle one looks just like it. I have a great fish spot in Chinatown where I get caviar at wholesale. Potato chips, good wine, silver dish—check.”

Palmer Coat
“The Palmer might be one of the most beautiful pieces in our fall collection, and it completes every outfit. I love it so much that I considered owning two sizes: a smaller one to wear cinched and formal, and one a size up to wear with knits for winter.”

Master Mask
“While you’re at Rescue Spa, pick up the Danucera Mastermask (and their whole kit if you can). As someone who has a very minimal skincare routine, I swear by this mask now when my face needs to be brought back to life.”

Double-Sided Rex Fur Throw
“This is a major splurge, but one you’ll forever thank yourself for and never want to leave home. Throw it on your bed, sofa, or your favorite reading chair, and you’ll be enveloped in a silk cloud. I would buy just a pillow if the blanket is too much.”

Tickets
“Experiencing a night at the Opera is a New York City must. I still want to see The Magic Flute, but I would see Madame Butterflyhours Turandothours La Traviata again.”

Scale Double Daybed Model No. 453 (France, 1953)
“This one is really just more of a wishlist item. A girl can dream.”
