The Book of Cold Cases TV Series From Colleen McGuinness, MGM In Works

EXCLUSIVE: In what sources described as a multi-studio bidding war, Colleen McGuinness has sold the pitch for a series adaptation of The Book of Cold Casesthe novel from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Simone St. James, to MGM Television, with Steve Stark’s Toluca Pictures attached to produce.

In The Book of Cold Casesa true crime blogger gets more than she bargained for while interviewing the woman acquitted of two cold case killings. The book was published by Berkley in 2022. McGuinness will pen the TV adaptation and exec produce alongside St. James, as well as Stark and Stacey Levin via Toluca Pictures.

An Emmy, WGA, and PGA Award-nominated writer and director, McGuinness is currently in pre-production on her debut feature, Loserbased on her award-winning short of the same name. McGuinness is set to write and direct the Radio Silence-produced thriller with a cast including Angourie Rice, Finn Bennett, Lukas Gage, and Eric Nam, among others.

McGuinness’ writing credits include 30 Rock for NBC (for which she shared in a 2013 Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy nomination), Ramy on Hulu, Forever on Amazon, Friends from College on Netflix, etc Life & Beth on Hulu, where she was also an EP. Most recently, she wrote on Liz Meriwether’s upcoming Emmy Rossum-led thriller series for Hulu. McGuinness has also sold projects to partners including HBO, FX, Paramount+, New Line, HBO Max and Apple, and has developed projects with A24, Tina Fey, Reese Witherspoon, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and Natasha Lyonne. She is represented by Untitled, CAA, and Ziffren Brittenham.

St. James’ other works include Murder Road, The Sundown Moteland the upcoming A Box Full of Darkness. She spent 20 years behind the scenes in the television business before shifting her focus to full-time writing and is repped by WME and Hopkins Literary.

Toluca Pictures has worked on series like Wednesday, Vikings: Valhalla, The Handmaid’s Tale and the forthcoming Bloodaxe for Prime Video, among others. The company and its founder Stark are repped by CAA as well as Bob Myman and Seth Michael at Myman Greenspan Fox.
