In the heart of the frozen northern ocean, thousands of kilometers away from the nearest inhabited cities, Norway’s Svalbard Island is located, which is one of the most isolated and mysterious places in the world, not only because of its harsh weather and snow that does not melt, but also because it is the only island in the world where “birth and death” are practically prohibited.

According to the newspaper, timesofindia, and CNN, there are about 2,000 people living in Sfalbard only in the main city of Longjierbin, which is a small complex surrounded by ice and white clouds throughout the year.

The island has a strange rule of its kind: childbirth or death is not allowed within its borders, so if a woman is about to give birth, she is transferred to the mainland in Norway before the expected date, as is the case for the elderly or patients in the last stages of life, where they are sent to hospitals outside the island.

The reason behind this rule is that it permanently freezes the soil, which makes the process of burial and natural decomposition of corpses almost impossible, as it can keep the remains preserved in the ice for decades before they decompose.

In addition to environmental factors, the island lacks adequate medical infrastructure, there are no well-equipped hospitals or organized burial services, and the extreme climatic conditions make it difficult to transport patients or victims during long periods of time.

The Norwegian authorities consider these rules to be a precautionary measure to protect the population and the unique environment of the island, where it is preferable to deal with deaths and deaths in areas that are more equipped and safe.
