Motorists have been using the ‘defog’ button on the wrong car – but there’s a simple fix

A TikTok user has shared the simple way to defog your windscreen without being forced to wipe it clean – and all you need to do is locate a certain button in your car

Motorists are buzzing with excitement after a TikTokker revealed a game-changing tip that means they can ditch cloths when it comes to demisting their windscreens.

The savvy social media account Precise Auto told app users that every car comes equipped with a special button that automatically clears foggy windows. The creator warned against the traditional method of wiping fog with a cloth, highlighting that “Not only is it ineffective but it also affects the driving safety.”

They explained the straightforward fix involves activating your vehicle’s “automatic windshield defogging function”. After switching it on, Precise Auto recommends turning off “Recirculation mode” to avoid unnecessary air movement inside the car. The next steps include engaging the external air intake and hitting the windshield defrost button.

Setting the air conditioning to a “medium position” is the trick to “remove the fog from the windshield quickly and effectively,” according to the TikTokker. Another popular TikTok user, @conggeshuoche, who boasts nearly three million followers, also explained this lesser-known feature to his audience.

He advised: “In winter be sure to turn off the AC and open the external circulation, this way there will be no frost on the glass and it will save fuel.” This revelation comes as experts now suggest that the most effective method to prevent ice on windshields is by using vegetables.

Apparently, the sugar molecules in onions and potatoes excel at preventing ice formation overnight, so drivers are encouraged to rub these veggies over their windshields and windows before hitting the hay.

If all else fails and you wake up to an icy windscreen, another TikTok hack suggests filling up a zip-lock bag with warm water and rubbing it over the screen to get rid of the ice instantly.
