Outdoor equipment retailer Orvis will close 36 locations by early 2026 due to “unprecedented tariff pressure,” president Simon Perkins said.
The Vermont-based company will shutter 31 stores and five outlets, which have not yet been specified. Orvis currently operates about 70 retail stores and six outlets across the US, according to its website.
In addition to its store closures, Orvis will reduce its product offerings, which include fly fishing gear, outdoor apparel and more.
“Like many in retail, Orvis’ business model faced a sizeable shift with the introduction of an unprecedented tariff landscape,” Perkins said in a statement, according to CT Insider. “For more than a century-and-a-half, we’ve been committed to being leaders in our space for customers and partners, beginning with our industry-leading fly rods still crafted in Vermont today. To ensure a durable brand and model for decades to come, we are focusing on our core strengths and making the difficult but necessary decision to rescale the business by tightening our assortment and reducing our corporate store footprint.
“As part of this effort, we will close 31 stores and 5 outlets by early 2026. We will be concentrating on a more focused retail store portfolio, as well as brick-and-mortar opportunities through our valued dealer network,” he added.
Orvis has more than 500 dealer partners nationwide, USA Today reports.
The news of Orvis’ store closures comes months after the company previously announced layoffs. In June, Orvis said it would lay off about 50 employees, according to that Valley News. The company has about 1,500 employees nationwide, according to its website.
In October 2024, Orvis announced it would lay off about 112 employees.
“We know this impacts people who are significant members of the Orvis family,” Perkins added in his statement. “We are deeply grateful to our associates who have done an exceptional job embodying the Orvis brand and core values for our local communities. And we highly value and appreciate our loyal customers whom we’ve grown to know through the stores we will be closing.”
Orvis was founded by Charles F. Orvis in Manchester, Vermont, in 1856, according to its website. The company is headquartered in Sunderland, Vermont, and also operates in the United Kingdom.
