Thinning lips are a concern for many of us as we age. The lips shrink for the same reason our skin looks less supple and begins to sag—loss of collagen. Collagen is like the structure that gives the skin integrity, so when this framework fades, the volume decreases too. The process begins in our 20s and continues at a rate of about a 1% loss every year after.
This natural process can’t be avoided, but great lipstick application can make the lips appear to have more volume, vibrancy and confidence. We turned to celebrity makeup artists Karoline Karakeosianwho works with stars like Sophia Carson and Lori Harveyto learn the best products and tricks for getting fuller, but natural looking lips. To get them just right, you’re probably going to need more than one product, which is why a lip kit can come in handy, since it provides everything you need with one purchase. And we’ve put together a list of the four best lip kits for women over 50.

Tips for Lip Color Application
Before you start anything lip color application, prepare the lips. Apply a hydrating lip balm, let it absorb, then blot lightly, Karakeosian says.
“And always neutralize lips first with a touch of foundation if you’re switching between shades, it keeps the color true,” she adds.

“Treat this kit as a ‘texture wardrobe,’” Karakeosian says. “Begin with the longest-wearing or matte formula as your base color, and layer a gloss or balm strategically at the center only for dimension.” Unless you want a lacquered look, she adds—in that case, you can apply gloss all over the lips.
To customize, you can mix tones, like a warm nude base with a cool gloss topper for more depth, she explains.

Karakeosian recommends defining the lips with light strokes “for a blurred, natural contour.”
“Then press the lipstick into the lips with a fingertip or brush, don’t swipe,” she adds. “This builds a plush, velvety finish.”
You can skip the gloss and let the satin texture speak on its own for what she calls “an editorial finish,” or use the gloss only at the center of the lips. “Think of it as a lighting effect, not a topcoat,” she explains.

Karakeosian recommends warming the liner tip on the back of your hand. “A soft tip gives smoother control,” she says. Next, “trace just beyond your natural lip edge at the cupid’s bow and lower center to subtly balance proportion.”
You can color in the lips to create a base stain, “this anchors the lipstick,” she explains. Then, apply the lipstick from the bullet or with a brush before youpress lips together to fuse pigment and liner. Then blot and reapply for that diffused, modern matte Charlotte is known for.”

After prepping the lips, “try softening the lip edges with concealer or a neutral liner for a clean shape,” Karakeosian says. “Then tape or swipe the stick onto the center of your lips to start sheer. Blend using your fingertip to melt and spread the color outward for a soft, diffused finish.”
You can add more lip color if needed and “tap the same shade on cheeks for harmony,” she adds. Finish with clear balm or gloss.
