The Central Organization for Public Mobilization and Statistics issued today, Sunday, a press release on the occasion of International Meteorological Day, which is celebrated on the third and twentieth of March every year since the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization and the beginning of the implementation of the Meteorological Convention to help countries preserve the environment and achieve sustainable development goals.

This year’s celebration is held under the slogan “To close the gap in the early warning system” which is in line with the direction of the international community towards taking ambitious decisions and actions to deal with the negative effects of climate change that affect all economic, social and environmental sectors that threaten the path of sustainable development.

And the most important weather indicators are:

Egypt took the lead in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) for 2025, where it ranked number (20) among the (67) countries that included the index, compared to the number (22) in the previous year 2024, ahead of South Africa, which ranked at (38), Algeria, which ranked at (51), and the United Arab Emirates, which ranked at (65).

• The highest urban average temperature in Egypt during 2023 was 43.9 °C in August at the Aswan monitoring station, while the lowest temperature was 30.1 °C in August at the Sharm el-Sheikh monitoring station.

• Climate change leads to the occurrence of more extreme weather phenomena such as floods and droughts, as well as global temperature increases to an increase in the amount of moisture retained in the atmosphere, which leads to more deserts and heavy rains. From 2000 until now, the number of flood-related disasters increased by 134% compared to the previous decade, and the majority of flood-related deaths and economic losses were recorded in the Asian continent. As the number of drought cases increased by 29% during the same period, most of the deaths related to drought in the African continent increased.

The climate change performance index (CCPI) is an indicator aimed at evaluating the policies and programs implemented in different countries to deal with climate change and includes (67) countries representing more than (90%) of the world’s total impacts and is issued by the German Environment and Development Organization (German Watch).
