Welcome to Cosmo HQ Review, the corner of the internet where our team of beauty-obsessed editors shares their unfiltered, honest thoughts on the latest and greatest launches in skin, hair, makeup, and fragrance…just for you.
There’s nothing like a good hair mask to give your strands the TLC they need, given everything they endure—workouts, heat styling, mounds of hairspray and dry shampoo, the list goes on and on. And when it comes to hair and TLC, no one likes it Olaplex. The brand completely changed the game with its repair-and-bond-building formulas when it was launched in 2018. It only makes sense that they’d eventually step into the world of rich, restorative masks, too.
The new Olaplex Weightless Nourishing Mask and the Rich Hydration Mask mark the brand’s first foray into rich, jar-style treatments. Unlike the numbered system, these are straightforward, post-shampoo, rinse-out masks that deliver deep hydration without heaviness
To see how the new Olaplex masks perform, four Cosmo editors with differences hair styles and textures—from straight hair with bangs to fine, 3B curls—put them to the test. Keep reading for our full reviewsplus pics of our hair after using the masks.
About the new Olaplex Hair Masks:
Weightless Nourishing Hair Mask

Rich Hydration Hair Mask

Back in September, Olaplex launched two new hair masks: the Weightless Nourishing Mask and the Rich Hydration Mask. The Weightless Nourishing Mask is best for hair that’s fine, thin, or tends to get greasy. The Rich Hydration Mask is better for deeply moisturizing and nourishing thicker and drier hair.
Use either of the masks instead of (or in addition to, depending on how dry your hair is) a conditioner for softened strands and added hydration. Both formulas are designed with Olaplex’s signature Biomimetic Cuticle Technology to help lock in moisture and prevent damage. The Weightless Mask contains smoothing and softening plant oils plus volumizing ingredients to prevent your hair from getting weighed down. The Rich Hydration Mask utilizes avocado oil and shea butter for maximum conditioning. Both masks (unique Olaplex’s No3 Perfector) are rinse-out treatments that can be used in the shower and are priced at $44.

I have long, thick, wavy, and dry hair. It’s a combo that requires a lot of maintenance and hydration, so I like to make sure I’m getting the most out of my hair products and wash days. But let me get to the point: I’ve tested a lot of hair products in my run as a beauty editor, but also as a thick hair gal, and none have made my waves as beautiful as this mask (the proof is in the photos below!). I simply used my favorite shampoo, then ran the mask through my mid-lengths to the ends, let it sit for a few minutes in the shower as I scrubbed my body, and washed and brushed my hair out as usual.
I didn’t use my usual mousse, leave-in spray, or any other hair products afterwards. I wanted to see the Olaplex magic work on its own, and let me tell you, this single formula outperformed any combination of hair products I’ve ever used. My hair was incredibly smooth on top, where I usually get flyaways or creased pieces near my forehead, and it felt unbelievably soft. My waves were defined and effortless, requiring no heat styling or touch-ups. The mask did all the work, creating the best waves my head has ever had. I even went three days without washing, and my hair was still hydrated and smooth on day four.

As someone with fine 3B curls, hair masks are a non-negotiable part of my curl routine. I immediately fell in love with this one, and it’s been the only mask I’ve used since I first tried it. The texture is thick and custard-like, it’s rich but not heavy, and a little truly goes a long way.
As soon as I rinse it out, I could feel a difference in my hair: it’s softer, smoother, and more hydrated without that weighed-down feeling some deep conditioners and hair masks leave behind. Even three days after washing my hair and using it, my curls still feel moisturized from root to tip.

If I’m being honest, I didn’t want to try this. It’s nothing personal—I love Olaplex!—I just find so many hair masks to be more trouble than they’re worth on my fine, frizz-prone hair. They’re either way too rich and heavy, so while they nourish, they also weigh my hair down—or they’re too lightweight and don’t make a dent in my frizz and flyaways. There’s also the time thing—I’m never going to be someone who uses something in the shower for 10+ minutes.
Lucky for me, Olaplex’s Weightless Nourishing Mask takes three minutes to do its thing and, like magic, was able to soften and smooth my frizz and dead ends without turning my roots into a flat mess. I normally have to use a hair oil on my ends and take one of those smoothing hair wand things to my crown to get rid of my flyaways after blow-drying, but after using this mask in the shower, I was able to skip styling products altogether.

I pretty much avoid anything overly hydrating at all costs. My short, fine, super-straight hair is low porosity, meaning it absolutely does not absorb anything heavy, like oils and butters. Soft! I trust Olaplex with my life; they have never steered me wrong, and the promise of “weightless volumizing hydration” sounded like it was practically made for my hair.
I was expecting a lighter formula, but I was intrigued when I opened the tube and found a true hair-mask-like consistency. Then, I peeked at the ingredients, and it contains coconut oil and shea butter, which I’d normally skip for my hair, but I’m glad I powered through and tried it. I use a tiny dollop and smooth it through my ends, using only a teensy bit near my roots just to hydrate and repair my heat-damaged bangs. After spritzing on volume spray and blow-drying, my hair looks so shiny, and I get so many compliments on my color. Everyone asked me if I had just gotten a hair gloss, and this product is the only thing I’d changed.
What I love most is that it makes my hair shiny, swimming greasy. It doesn’t make my ends feel weighed down with residue. Of course, it’s also repairing and preventing damage, which is key for my fragile, color-treated hair that I put through the wringer (read: heat style) almost every day.
The final verdict:
Olaplex’s new hair masks deliver soft, hydrated hair without weighing it down. Both formulas work beautifully on different hair types, from fine and straight to thick and textured. The masks leave strands smooth, nourished, and easier to style. They require less than five minutes in the shower and keep hair looking (and feeling) fresh for days.
