Paul Dano and Robert Pattinson proved to be a powerful combination, portraying Batman and The Riddler, respectively, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. However, ahead of The Batman 2 (set for release in October 2027), the two stars’ involvement in a new A24 movie has been confirmed. This drama, titled The Chaperoneswill be produced by Pattinson’s production company, Icki Eneo Arlo.
With India Donaldson (Good One) set to direct, The Chaperones will star Dano alongside The Long Walk duo Cooper Hoffman and David Johnson, following “three slacker friends who are hired to transport a troubled teen across the country” just after Christmas, as reported by Variety. Newcomer Sebastian Black is writing the screenplay, while Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B will also produce.
It is an exciting project for all involved, given A24’s impressive track record across all genres. The independent film company released the likes of Sorry, Baby and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You this year both among the 2025 Gotham Awards nominees. Other titles included Eddington, Materialistsand The Smashing Machinewith the studio’s primary Oscar contender, Marty Supreme, still to come.
With no word on when The Chaperones may start filming, it’s unclear if audiences will see this or not The Batman 2 first. Rising stars Hoffman and Jonsson — famous for Licorice Pizza, Saturday Night, Alien: Romulusand Industry — both have other upcoming projects to schedule around. Coming off the success of The Wizard of the KremlinDano seems to be focused only on this.
Dano shot to fame in the mid-2000s with 2006’s Little Miss Sunshine and 2007’s There Will Be Blood, both Best Picture nominees and the latter a historic loss in a tight race with No Country For Old Men. Dano went on to star in Escape at Dannemora, Mr. & Mrs. Smithand The Fabelmansbecoming an actor who could easily be tapped for a new, relevant take on The Riddler.
Pattinson broke out with the role of Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga, following the significant part of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. However, he has long escaped the low-brow sentiment associated with Twilightworking with acclaimed filmmakers on Tenet, Mickey 17and Die My Lovewith upcoming films including Dune 3 and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
Dano and Pattinson are established separately as prestigious creatives but are fascinating together, making their next collaboration significant. However, The Chaperones will also be accompanied by the release of The Batman 2 at some point and may prompt audiences to ask what type of movie they want to see from either actor next.
