Jon Stewart isn’t going anywhere.
Stewart has closed another one-year deal to remain as one of the hosts and executive producers of The Daily Show through the end of next year. It is his third such deal and takes him through December 2026.
The move is not a surprise and was telegraphed in a recent live interview Stewart did with The New Yorker’s David Remnick last month, where he told his friend, “We’re working on staying.”
Stewart hosts the show on Mondays with Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta and Desi Lydic, as well as Josh Johnson, hosting the rest of the nights. He returned at the beginning of 2024 and signed a one-year deal at this time last year.
The Daily Show has been performing well in the ratings recently and scored its best haul of Emmy nominations this year, with Lydic winning.
However, there have been some question marks over the show’s future given parent company Paramount’s decision to unceremoniously cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, of which Stewart is one of the executive producers.
Stewart addressed this in his recent The New Yorker interview. He said, “(Paramount has) already done things that I’m upset about. But then if I had integrity, maybe I would stand up and go, ‘I’m out.’ Or maybe the integrity thing to do would be to stay in it and keep fighting in the foxhole.”
In the days after the Colbert axing, Stewart told his employer to “go f*ck yourself” and joked that after a summer hiatus, he didn’t know whether the new owners Skydance, led by David Ellison, would “let us back in the building.”
Stewart exec produces The Daily Show alongside showrunner Jen Flanz and Stewart’s manager, James “Baby Doll” Dixon.
“Jon Stewart continues to elevate the genre he created. His return is an ongoing commitment to the incisive comedy and sharp commentary that define The Daily Show,” said Ari Pearce, Head of Comedy Central. “The renewal is a win for audiences, for Comedy Central and for all our programming partners. We’re proud to support Jon and the extraordinary news team.”
