Dr. Muhammad Al-Shazli, the official spokesman of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, confirmed that the work is still underway on the preparation and drafting of amendments to the new sports law, noting that the project has not been completed yet.
Al-Shazli explained that Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, the Minister of Youth and Sports, had confirmed since assuming office in 2018, that the Sports Law No. 71 of 2017 is a good law, but it needs some additions and amendments, and it is not currently being implemented.
The official spokesperson emphasized that the parliament is the only body responsible for issuing legislation, and that it will be a partner in the community dialogue after the final drafting of the draft law. He added: “The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Council of Ministers are not interested in making amendments or receiving proposals regarding the new law, and the Parliament is only responsible for that.”
Al-Shazli pointed out that the previous meetings were held for a long time to discuss the law, in which the late Al-Ameri Farouk, the former vice president of Al-Ahly Club, and Saad Shalabi, the executive director of the club, along with a number of club presidents and sports federations, participated.
Regarding the Ministry’s position on the last statement of Al-Ahli, Al-Shazli said: “We responded to the official letter, and we confirmed that the Ministry is still in the final stage of drafting and did not start the community dialogue yet, and we informed Al-Ahli that the dialogue will take place as soon as the preparation is completed.”
He criticized some of the statements issued by the clubs, believing that there were violations in the wording, explaining that one of the clubs addressed the Prime Minister’s Office to request a copy of the new law, but issued a media statement before the address was sent to the relevant party, which is contrary to the protocol.
He added: “It’s not for 1,200 people, even if we assume that the Ministry agreed with the government to cancel the 8-year ban, for example, and the House of Representatives rejects that, so will it be possible for the party to object?”
