True Detective season 1 star Woody Harrelson sets the record straight on a sequel to the hit HBO show’s debut season. Airing in 2014, the crime drama’s first outing featured Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as co-leads, and, for many, it remains the anthology show’s best, with repeated calls from fans for a follow-up.
Although McConaughey has kept the door open regarding a return for their characters, Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, Harrelson makes it clear that Today that he won’t be coming back for any more True Detective. “Matthew’s so funny,” the actor says, laughing, before definitively saying he wouldhate” return as Marty for a follow-up.
When pushed to explain why, Harrelson makes it clear that, for him, nothing could top that original outing for Rust and Marty as they investigate a murder across three decades in Louisiana. Check out his comment below:
“No chance, because it turned out great. I loved that it turned out the way it did. And, if anything, doing another season would, I think, tarnish that.”
Harrelson shutting down rumors of a return to True Detective comes less than a month later McConaughey offered a surprisingly optimistic response them nWith regarding a potential sequel, saying “we’re keen on the idea.” Though McConaughey echoed Harrelson’s sentiments about it being challenging to top what they did in season 1, he also makes clear that he’d be back in a heartbeat if the material was good:
“There’s excitement, yes, but I haven’t seen a script yet. When I originally read True Detectiveeverything that came out of Rust Cohle’s mouth was white-hot. The script was on fire so the execution (of a sequel) must go another step. We’re keen on the idea but it’s nothing more than an idea. If Nic puts something on paper that Woody and I think is good enough, it wouldn’t even be a choice. We would look at it and go, ‘it must happen’. It’s gotta be damn good though because we set a pretty good precedent!”
Demand for a return to the world and story of True Detective season 1 has been strong for years, but it reached a new level when the series creator Nic Pizzolatto confirmed earlier this year that he has been toying with the idea of a follow-up.
Although Pizzolatto made it clear that nothing is officially in the works, he told them Nothing Left Unsaid podcast: “I have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it someday.” He also noted, however, that he feels “no pressure“to turn make the idea a reality.
True Detective season 5 is now in the works, with Pizzolatto now just attached to the show as an executive producer. Season 4, subtitled Night Country, hailed from creator and showrunner Issa López, who is also handling season 5. It’s been reported that the new episodes will take place in New York’s Jamaica Bay.
After Pizzolatto made an effort to distance himself from the show during the airing of Night Countryit seems like he is now attached to the series in name only. Even if Harrelson and McConaughey were both on board for a follow-up, who has authorial power over the series is now a little more complicated.
True Detective season 1 remains a fan favorite, earning glowing reviews for its performances, writing, and tantalizing mystery. Although it’s not uncommon to see the sentiment that the show never returned to this level of quality in subsequent seasons, Harrelson’s comment suggests audiences shouldn’t hold their breath for more from Marty and Rust.
