People Are Calling Out The Modern Home Design Trends They Secretly Hate, And It’s Jarring

We recently wrote a post where people revealed the modern home design trends they can’t standand it started quite a conversation. So, in the comments, more readers shared the popular trends they dislike or that miiiight be considered outdated soon, and it’s fascinating. Here’s what they had to say:

1. “Small bathtubs. I need something better than the tiny tubs in the last several apartments I lived in. I’m a guy who actually loves a bath every so often, but the one in my current place is so small I literally got stuck in it. Felt like a turtle who’d gotten rolled on his back, lol.”

A modern bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, overhead shower, small window, and a toilet. A bath tray holds a cup and toiletries

2. “The lack of space between homes. Most new developments allow for 5-foot setbacks from the property line. Not only is this grossly inadequate for privacy, it’s a HUGE fire hazard as homes adjacent to a house fire can combust from the heat alone within 20 feet.”

3. “Not necessarily something that will seem outdated, but these big ‘boneless’ sofa couches. You cannot find a regular pull-out sofa bed anymore! There are all these random giant cushion couches if you want a sleeper sofa. Why can’t I just buy a run-of-the-mill couch with a mattress that pulls out?”

4. “Luxury vinyl tile. There is no such thing as luxury vinyl.”

5. “Square or rectangular sinks. They are much harder to keep clean with all the corners.”
—Anonymous

6. “As climate change kills us with heat, the open concept needs to go away. Transom windows can return to control heat/air distribution — updated with temp control to auto-open/close. I don’t know why builders don’t look to the past or hotter countries to see how they deal with it.”

7. “White quartz kitchen countertops.”

8. “Something I’ve seen more hotels doing in the 10–15 years… those bathrooms that don’t have a full shower door. Who decided a half door on the shower was a good idea? I try so hard not to make a mess, but I soak the bathroom floor every time.”

9. “Painted brick.”

10. “Pot fillers over the stove. If the water in it sits for long, you have to fill a pot, empty it in the sink, fill it again, and then take it to the sink to drain once your pasta is cooked. You’ve added a trip to the sink, instead of taking one away.”

11. “Zany carpet designs.”

12. “Painted cabinets. Wood cabinets are great and will be timeless if they are a neutral tone. Not red, orange, gray, or overly yellow. Natural, walnut, and white are classics.”
“I think the blue and green painted cabinets will go out soon.”—u/trishipoodles

13. “Distressed-looking furniture — unless it is a real stylish antique piece.”

14. “Refrigerators that blend in and look like the cabinets, or one big glass door that shows everything inside. Personally, I wouldn’t do the clear door because I’m not Martha Stewartwhere all her lovely, brightly colored, fresh vegetables are lined up perfectly to show their best angle.”
“My fridge is full of glass jars, condiments, bottles of juice, milk cartons, open cans of dog food, and leftovers.”—u/Badassblizzard

15. “Modern farmhouse homes and all-white kitchens.”
—Anonymous, 38, Minnesota

16. “A ‘drawer’ microwave. Or any microwave below counter height.”

And finally…

17. “These HUGE showers for, like, eight people are drafty, cold, and ridiculous to clean. Who needs a shower this big? Make it big enough for two people if you want, or a wheelchair, if you have to, and that’s it!”
