An acclaimed and unconventional crime drama from 2019 is now available at no extra cost for Netflix subscribers
Netflix subscribers have some long nights ahead now the winter months are looming, and there’s no better way to spend it than catching up with some of the best films of recent years.
The streaming service has some major Hollywood hits available as well as a huge catalog of original features and shows.
However, make sure this surprising gem from the crime genre doesn’t pass you by as it’s just been added to the platform over the weekend.
Starring iconic pop diva Jennifer Lopez giving what might be the best performance of her acting career, this riveting thriller has been described as “Goodfellas in G-strings” by Little White Lies.
The movie is Hustlers, a crime epic with a twist that is guaranteed to warm up your living room against the cold snaps.
Constance Wu leads the film as struggling stripper Dorothy aka Destiny whose whole world changes after seeing a mesmerizing performance by Ramona Vega (played by Lopez).
After striking up a friendship with the veteran dancer, she forms a close-knit group of strippers who make a killing during the 2008 financial crash by scamming rich clients.
Praised for his spectacular direction and unflinching look at the world of strip clubs, it’s J.Lo who truly shines as Hustlers’ jaw-dropping highlight, with many fans backing her for Oscar gold at the time.
Christy Lemire for RogerEbert.com called the role “Lopez’s best screen work since her early heyday of Selena and Out of Sight…” and a “…career-best performance.”
Kate Erbland of IndieWire described it as “funny, empowering, sexy, emotional, and a bit scary.”
She then added: “The Oscar chatter for Lopez’s revelatory, nuanced, and emotional turn as a brilliant con artist and better exotic dancer is no joke.”
Peter Debruge wrote for Variety: “Flashy, fleshy and all-around impossible to ignore, Hustlers amounts to nothing less than a cultural moment, inspired by an outrageous New York Magazine profile (which serves as the sturdy six-inch stilettos on which the movie stands) adapted by writer-director Lorene Scafaria at her most Scorsese, and starring Jennifer Lopez like you’ve never seen her before.”

Hustlers has also been a hit with casual viewers, with one fan saying on X (formerly Twitter) at the time: “Hustlers was incredible. It was part mob/heist film with the power of deep friendship.
“It was sexy without the male gaze, it wasn’t about romantic relationships but it didn’t ignore them. AND the casting was spot on.”
And another quipped: “hustlers is a better movie than the irishman, once upon a time in hollywood and joker combined.”
