Laurence Fishburne On Why Professor X Would Be The Perfect MCU Role For Him Right Now

Marvel Studios is actively working on its highly anticipated X-Men reboot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as various iconic mutants will be re-imagined for the big screen. The Multiverse Saga may be reaching its end by 2027, but the next era for the Avengers-based franchise is already in the works, as the X-Men will finally take a bigger spotlight after Phase 6.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley for The Witcher season 4, Laurence Fishburne elaborated on his wish to play Professor X for Marvel Studios. The Matrix trilogy legend stated, “Should they reboot it then I would love to be considered. But other than that, I don’t know what else to say.”

The former Ant-Man and the Wasp star added that “I am what I like to describe as a true believer when it comes to all things Marvel Comics and the MCU.” Fishburne, who played Bill Foster, expressed, “So there were a lot of other parts that I would have loved to have played when I was a younger man.”

However, even he is now 64 years old, Fishburne commented that he is “at the age that I am at now, I feel that Professor X is probably the most appropriate thing for me to do if I were lucky enough to be cast in another Marvel picture.” Sir Patrick Stewart is currently set to reprise his version of the Marvel icon as part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast

The MCU timeline has been slowly setting up the mutants throughout Phases 4–6, with characters like Ms. Marvel and Namor being established in the franchise. Other original X-Men stars have also appeared throughout various projects, including Kelsey Grammer’s Beast in The Marvels.

While the MCU isn’t looking at doing a reboot through Avengers: Secret Wars, Kevin Feige revealed on July 21, 2025, that the final Phase 6 film will launch a “reset.” The Marvel Studios boss stressed that “Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines.”

Following his work with thunderbolts*director Jake Schreier is officially attached to helm the X-Men movie, based on a script by Michael Lesslie. Production has yet to begin, with no indication of who will be part of the line-up for the team-up installment.

An MCU reset could, in theory, have Fishburne be tapped as Professor X, as his previous gig in the franchise could be essentially erased in a post-Avengers: Secret Wars timeline. At the time of publication, Marvel Studios has yet to set a release date for the X-Men reboot.

The Witcher season 4 will be released on October 30, only on Netflix.
