When the Karyn Kusama-helmed pilot of Yellowjackets debuted in 2021, an opening time jump left fans wondering the identity of ‘Pit Girl’, a faceless teen girl hunted to her death in the snowy wilderness.
After the Season 3 finale ‘Full Circle’ revealed Alexa Barajas’ Mari as the doomed sacrifice in the titular soccer team’s hunt, Kusama shared her reaction with Deadline to the April episode, which recreated her opening chase sequence.
“I was getting a sense that that’s where things were headed, so it wasn’t a huge surprise to me, because I was a little bit behind the scenes to know what was happening,” she said of the Showtime series, which was created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson.
“But it’s funny to have made the pilot where that was actually still an open question,” Kusama continued. “I think they had a few ideas through the first season of where things would land, but it was pretty fun for me to be able to set up a question that might still be in process in terms of finding the answer. And so it was cool to see that wrap up.”
With the announcement that Yellowjackets‘ fourth season will be its last, Kusama noted that she won’t be returning after she last directed the Season 2 finale episode ‘Storytelling’.

“No, I kind of knew I was going to give two years to that show,” she explained. “And I feel like they have such a handle on how they wanted the story to progress, and how they wanted to sort of have all those different threads either tie up or remain kind of dangling. And I’ve loved everyone, actors, creators, crew on that show. But I decided I was gonna start developing some stuff of my own.”
As the director prepares to attend Saturday’s screening of her Diablo Cody-penned cult classic Jennifer’s Body at the Academy Museum, where she will participate in a Q&A with star Megan Fox after, she acknowledged the 2009 horror comedy’s influence on Yellowjackets.
“I recognize probably now, that that’s why I was a candidate for them, because I really believe in the power of teenage girls,” said Kusama. “And sometimes it’s a fearful power, but I think teenage girls are where it’s at.”
