Dune: Prophecy has proven a hit with fans of the science fiction franchise, but some viewers are already convinced they’ve figured out how the HBO Max series will end
Viewers of Dune: Prophecy have been speculating about how the HBO prequel series, set thousands of generations before Paul Atreides (portrayed by Timothee Chalamet), will pave the way for the events depicted in the films.
The highly acclaimed science fiction blockbusters, released in 2021 and 2024, chart Paul’s mission to liberate the oppressed desert planet Arrakis after discovering he is the Kwisatz Haderach, a potent entity created by a prophetic sisterhood known as the Bene Gesserit.
Now, fans of the successful franchise are being transported back to 10,000 years prior to Paul’s birth to uncover the origins of the Bene Gesserit and a sinister scheme to infiltrate the Imperium.
In the inaugural episode, a mysterious newcomer named Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel) alleges that Imperial rebels were behind the massacre of his entire regiment on Arrakis, not the indigenous Fremen people.
Upon arriving at Salusa Secundus for the nuptials of Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior) and Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina), Desmond employs a “great power” to simultaneously murder both Pruwet and Kasha Jinjo (Jihae) by incinerating them from within, reports the Express.
Fans are now theorizing that this telekinetic ability to kill from afar will somehow be harnessed by the Bene Gesserit to create the test of the Pain Box, a torturous device Paul encounters at the beginning of the first Dune film.
One viewer shared their theory on Reddit, suggesting not only that Desmond might be some form of AI but also that his abilities could be a precursor to the box.
“Look, I am in the ‘he’s a robot’ camp, and I don’t know if this is somewhere else on here, but can we all agree that when this shakes out, whatever power he has will be co-opted by the Bene Gesserit to be whatever powers the box from the gom jabbar test?” they penned.
“‘Pain through nerve induction’ and corpses ‘burned from the inside’ are pretty close.
“That’s what it looked like at the end of the first episode anyway. Not a huge thing, but thoughts?”
Another theory took things up a notch, suggesting that Desmond himself, along with his seemingly supernatural abilities, will directly inspire the Bene Gesserit’s millennia-long plan to breed the Kwisatz Haderach.
“I believe Desmond represents a force they haven’t encountered before,” they proposed.
“As the show progresses, his power and abilities will push the newly formed Bene Gesserit to adopt a definitive objective.
“They will decide that creating a more powerful, selectively bred, and rigorously trained male-the true Kwisatz Haderach-is their ultimate goal.”
Desmond has already demonstrated his ability to resist the power of Valya Harkonnen’s (Emily Watson) Voice, but does he have more sinister tricks hidden away?
Dune: Prophecy continues Sundays on HBO and the following Monday on Sky and NOW.
