You can keep your Patagonia puffer and your cushy Ugg boots this season, but if you want to dress like a “rich mom” with an upstate New York-based cabin — or just love classic style — you’ll want to add a Fair Isle sweater to your wardrobe. Originating on a small Scottish island and popular for over a century — the Prince of Wales famously wore one in 1921 — these iconic sweaters are known for their intricate patterns and continued popularity among modern members of the royal family, celebs like Jennifer Lopez and Katie Holmesas well as skiers everywhere.
But you don’t need to know what “après ski” means or drive a Land Rover Defender to pull off the luxe look. Just slip on one of these stylish toppers with jeans, a satin slip skirt or a pair of work trousers. They’re versatile, come in pretty much any color you could wish for in both slim-fitting and generous cuts — even snuggly cardis — and yes, they will exude multi-generational family wealth.
While they do sometimes cost hundreds of dollars, if you’re looking for more frugal Fair Isle options, we’ll loop you in. Sport the look with any of these picks, starting at just $23.

For less than 25 bucks, this sweater is a steal! It comes in a range of colors and patterns, but this camel style, accented with fall foliage-like shades, screams “rich mom” from the mountaintops. A note: Some shoppers report it runs a bit big, so be sure to consult the sizing chart.
One five-star fan called it “beautiful, soft (and) cozy,” and added that “the fabric is so very soft and has some stretch.”

This sweater is giving Elsa vibes, but instead, I must advise you not to “let it go!” Get this in a few Fair Isle patterns — it has a soft mock-neck collar, a tunic-like length, and it would fit right in at an upstate abode.
“I am really impressed with the quality. This sweater is soft, bouncy and exactly as pictured. Good colors, fit and arrived quickly,” said a swooning sweater-seeker.

Kohl’s
If you’re not one for patterns or pops of color, this pick may be for you. Its muted print isn’t too loud, making it a good Fair Isle starter sweater for minimalists. The soft yarn, mockneck and relaxed fit are a bonus. Wear it with jeans or a silver slip skirt for a night out.
“This is such a luxurious sweater and so soft!” said one Kohl’s shopper. “It is true to size and has a bit of an oversized feeling to it … I just love it — I’m online buying another.”

Anthropology
Fair Isle can be glam! Anthropologie pairs the print with rhinestone embellishments in this cardi, available in blue or brown. Wear it over a simple T-shirt or over a blouse. A couple of things to keep in mind: It doesn’t have buttons, and it is one-size-fits-all — that said, few buyers note it being too big or small.
“This is so cute and feminine. Feels soft and warm. Love the colors and design. Very flattering,” explained an enchanted cardigan collector, who added that, “It is short, but with the right coordinates, it looks great. I’m keeping this one.”

Gap
Leave it to Gap to make a comfy, slouchy turtleneck that you’ll want to curl up next to the fire with a cup of hot cocoa. It’s soft and snuggly, with a faux-mohair knit and a slightly longer tunic length. The black and white contrasting Fair Isle pattern just adds to its charm. Looking for a more classic fit? Gap recommends going down one or two sizes.

Kohl’s
If you prefer an all-over Fair Isle pattern, this option is a sure-fire winner. It comes in three colors, although we’re partial to this “rich mom” mix of neutrals. It’s a heavyweight, so you can wear it with your ski pants for added warmth as you zoom down the mountain or pop it on with a pair of jeans to keep warm at the local tree-lighting this holiday season.

Here’s another glam option in the season’s hottest hue: mocha brown. The cardigan is adorned with a light pink and red pattern, a preppy collar and blingy rhinestone buttons. Wear it on a night out to the local tavern or with a sequin skirt to a holiday party.

Bloomingdale’s
Bloomingdale’s is known for outfitting swanky, NYC Upper East Side moms, so I’m not surprised this pick is among its exclusive Aqua brand. It has a slightly slouchy fit and a somewhat chunkier knit in muted hues that you can dress up or down. Or as one Fair Isle fanatic suggested: “Gorgeous with my white slacks and a light, white-collared shirt. My fave sweater!”

Norstrom Rack
Maximalists, fall in love with this busier (in the best possible way!) all-over pattern. The slightly cropped fit falls at your waistline, so it won’t overwhelm even petite sizes. Pair it with sparkly, silver hoop earrings and leather pants for date night or jeans and snow boots for a walk in the powdery snow.
“The fabric is soft and warm, and I really like the subtle glints from the Lurex threads woven throughout,” said one cozy convert. “It elevates it a bit from an ordinary sweater. Looking forward to wearing this all winter long….. To quote my husband, ‘That’s a winner!’”

Kohl’s
If you’re already planning your holiday looks, include this festive red pick. The pretty Fair Isle print features white poinsettias (or snowflakes, however you want to interpret it) that can cheer up any outfit. Wear it with red corduroys or red satin pants for an easy, elevated monochromatic outfit or over your jammies on Christmas morning. If that hue isn’t your jam, it comes in a number of other colors.

Nordstrom Rack
It’s rare to find Barbour on sale, but Nordstrom Rack just stocked its site with some fashionable picks from the British brand. This topper combines two iconic knit styles: cable knit and Fair Isle. It’s a great mix of neutrals and bolder colors, but it doesn’t feel too busy.
