Netflix drops two versions of ‘most iconic Christmas story ever’ just in time for the holidays

While there are plenty of festive film favorites to choose from on Netflix, two versions of the same story have been dubbed the most iconic Christmas tale of all time

Netflix has just dropped two cherished adaptations of a festive favorite, both distinct in their own right but equally treasured by fans.

The global streaming giant already boasts an enviable roster of holiday films, including timeless hits such as The Holiday and Jack Frost, alongside newer gems like Klaus and the Princess Switch series.

As Christmas approaches, viewers can anticipate even more merry offerings hitting the platform throughout December, but Netflix may have outdone itself with its latest additions.

Portrayed by two megastars, the central character in these films is hailed as one of the most memorable Yuletide figures to ever grace the page, transitioning from villain to hero.

No, it’s not A Christmas Carol; we’re talking about Dr Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which has just become available for Netflix subscribers at no additional charge, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The original whimsical tale leapt off the page in an animated adaptation back in 1966, later transformed into a full-blown live-action spectacle in 2000 with Jim Carrey donning the iconic green fur.

This box office sensation has captured hearts for over twenty years now, even prompting one fan on Letterboxd to proclaim: “I legitimately and without any shred of sarcasm or irony think that Jim Carrey deserved an Oscar nom for this.”

Another admirer gushed: “The best and funniest Christmas movie ever made. Sorry, but this one is absolutely amazing, and I never get tired of watching it.

“They literally aired it daily on TV between November and December during my childhood, and every time it was on, I watched it.”

And Empire commented: “Despite laboring under about three feet of latex, Jim Carrey still comes across loud and clear in this adaptation of the Dr Seuss poem. It’s also rather funny Carrey improvising away despite all the big-budget shenanigans going on around him.”

While not as acclaimed, the 2018 animated version by Illumination has delighted countless youngsters and boasts an outstanding vocal performance by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Some have proclaimed it an underappreciated classic, with a fan remarking: “Rewatched this absolute masterpiece last night and it has solidified my belief that it’s only hated because people’s nostalgia goggles are on too tight.

“It’s hilarious and it has absolutely stunning animation. Don’t listen to the haters, give this a watch.”

No matter which rendition of the beloved story you fancy, the Grinch is a must-watch figure of the festive season.

As a fan recently expressed on X (formally Twitter): “The Grinch is the greatest Christmas character of all time!”

Echoing this festive enthusiasm, another individual said this year: “It’s December 1st. Time to introduce my daughter to the greatest Christmas movie of all time, the the the… THE GRINCH!!!”

MovieWeb has crowned the Grinch as the runner-up for the most iconic Christmas movie character, trailing just behind Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) from Home Alone.

“The Grinch is the ultimate Christmas curmudgeon-turned-hero committed to cinema,” they penned.

“The story is solid and casts a powerful spell in the image of holiday jeer-turned-cheer in both renditions, making him one of the most iconic Christmas characters of all time.”

How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Grinch are available to stream on Netflix.
