While the reception for Pokémon Legends: ZA has been relatively positive among critics since the game’s release last week, player reviews have started to paint a very different picture. Fans appear to be divided about whether the game is incredible, absolutely awful, or if it’s a little middle.
According to Metacritic, Pokémon Legends: ZA only has just a 4.5 user score out of 10, with the overall sentiment being “Generally unfavorable.” Compared to the Generally Favorable Critic Review score, players are much more uncertain about everything from the game mechanics, art and graphic design, performance, and more.
Fan Division Is Expected, But Legends ZA User Reviews Are All Over The Place
While critical reception for Pokémon Legends: ZA has been largely positive, with Screen Rant’s review score noting it could be “one of the best entries yet” in the series, player feedback paints a little different picture of what the community thinks. Many players seem to agree with the positive reviews, such as Glammywho thinks this is the “best Pokemon game on Nintendo Switch.”
However, unfavorable Legends ZA reviews are far more abundant, and at the time of this writing, over 65% of the nearly 1500 reviews are either Mixed or Negative. Players note everything from button mashing gameplay (Ifuritto), lackluster graphics and hollow NPCs (GreatGrekos), and the “low quality city design” of the game’s main setting (SKeenW).
The outdated graphics and lack of voice acting has been seen as a problem more or less universally among fans and critics alike. But users are also finding the game underwhelming, and even middling reviews note the game’s obvious “missed opportunities everywhere” (RangerBlue), or that “there’s not much to explore” (lecraph).
It’s not just Metacritic either, as players across social media have noted mixed reviews, such as Reddit user matador72772, who says the city exploration “feels kind of cheap,” while user Appropriate_Set_1138 Argues that the “new combat is really good” but still thinks that overall game needs improvement.
Pokémon Legends: ZA Fan Response Points To Bigger Problems
Fans Are Divided About The Future Of The Series
One thing that can be gleaned from all these negative reviews for Pokémon Legends: ZA is that opinions about the future of the series are completely divided. Many players seem to think this is a step in the right direction, or at least that the game offers an enjoyable experience for what it is. However, it highlights a growing frustration among fans that Legends isn’t doing much in the way of innovation or pushing the bar for anything Pokémon game could offer.
The notion of missed opportunities rings most true among nearly all reviews, even the most glowing, and it’s clear that players think Pokémon Legends: ZA had a lot of untapped potential. Overall, while many fans are still enjoying the game, they wish it had been done more.
