A thousand students gathered inside AT&T Stadium not to watch a football game, but to learn about winning at the game of life.
“What I learned from this experience was that I’m not alone,” Mesquite High School student Brook’lyn MacDonald said. “There’s people all around me going through something. It’s OK to ask for help. It’s OK to need something from somebody and also be successful.”
That insight was shared from Pro Football Hall of Famers Darrell Green, Aeneas Williams, Drew Pearson, Anthony Muñoz, and former UNC basketball player Iman McFarland.
It’s part of Green’s Strong Youth Strong Community movement.
“We’re trying to meet them at every place that they are in, saying that you know what, you can do it,” Strong Youth Strong Community and Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green said. “You can make it no matter what your situation is.”
Pearson shared inspiration from his own journey and struggles making it to the pros.
“The number one thing you’ve got to believe in is yourself,” former Cowboy and Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Pearson said. “If I didn’t believe in myself, I would have never been a pro football player, let alone a pro football hall of famer.”
One Fort Worth Principal who came with her students said summits like this are important.
“Being able to present them with the opportunity to hear people who have gone through adversity and have overcome a lot of challenges in their lives, which our students see on my campus, I think it’s going to be really beneficial for them in the long run,” Van Zandt-Guinn Elementary School Principal Juanita White said.
After small group discussions, students shared what they’ll take back to their school and communities.
“Adversity is normal for everyone,” North Mesquite High School student Talyn Leake said. “Everyone is going to go through mental battles. It’s normal because we are all human. It’s about how you persevere through them and how you get through them. So, whether that’s seeking God, seeking your faith, or talking to somebody about it, because it’s okay to talk about your feelings.”
