More than half of adults admit they turn to horror movies as a way to de-stress, according to a poll of 2,000 film enthusiasts.
A recent survey revealed that over half of those who enjoy watching scary movies choose to do so when they need to relax, while a staggering three quarters say these films help them escape from reality.
Horror films are enjoyed by more than 41% of viewers, with the genre seeing a recent surge in popularity as one in four fans discovered their love for it within the last three years.
The average horror movie fan typically watches an impressive 36 of these films per year – with 53% saying this number increases during October.
Besides providing a means of destressing, 80% enjoy the adrenaline rush it gives them. The study showed that the thrill and suspense are what 38% find the most appealing about horror movies.
The research was commissioned by Beavertown which is launching its Halloween film series with a spine-tingling ‘Dead Carpet’ event at London’s Prince Charles Cinema, where horror icons will prowl the blood-red carpet kicking off “Beavertown Screamings,” – a week of horror classics from 23rd to 31st October.
A spokesperson for the brand said: “Horror movies have a unique way of captivating viewers from the suspense of the unknown to the shocking jump scares.”
