The Baroque Works will continue to be a thorn in the Straw Hat Pirates’ side as well One Piece season 3 has cast a major figure of the organization. One Piece season 2 will be introducing the Baroque Works, a secretive organization operating in the Grand Line trying to gain power over the core area the storyline takes place in.
With five months left until season 2 introduces them, Netflix has announced on their social media that Cole Escola has joined the One Piece season 3 cast as a key member of the group. The Big Mouth star, who is non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns, is set to star as the Baroque Works member Bon Clay, also known as Mr. 2 and Bentham.
Bon Clay has the ability to transform into an exact copy of anyone he’s ever touched with his right hand. Their portrayal will be reimagined as a non-binary figure instead of that of a drag character, as they were portrayed in the original manga and the anime adaptation. Check out the official casting announcement below:
Escola is joining plenty of other newcomers to the cast of One Piece who will be portraying Baroque Works members. Highlights include David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, Sophia Anne Caruso as Miss Goldenweek, Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday, or Nico Robin, and Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0, or Crocodile. Bon Clay is another major part of the group too.
In the manga and anime, Bentham is introduced during the Little Garden Arc, initially befriending the Straw Hat Pirates while harboring his own nefarious goals due to his association with Baroque Works. His character arc is more dynamic than other members, though, lasting throughout the anime’s Alabasta Saga.
In the live-action version, however, they aren’t going to be showing up until One Piece season 3. Since Little Garden will be featured in season 2, this marks a key change to their appearance. Whether this means other differences to their storyline will also transpire remains to be seen.
Escola is a seasoned actor that makes them a strong choice for Bon Clay. They’ve most recently had a voice role in the animated coming-of-age drama Boys Go to Jupiterand won a number of awards for writing and performing the comedy play Oh Mary! Their comedic and dramatic background makes them perfect for the Baroque Works role.
Since One Piece season 2 is still months away, it’ll be quite some time before Escola’s version of Bentham arrives onscreen. The reimagined version of the character opens the door to new storytelling possibilities while maintaining the same elements they’re best known for in the source material. This, coupled with their later appearance in live-action contrasted with the anime, make them all the more compelling.
