‘The Hillside Strangler’ Docuseries Set At MGM+

The Hillside Strangler case, which saw two serial killers terrorize Los Angeles in the late 1970s, is set to be explored in a new true-crime docuseries for MGM+.

The network and streamer has greenlit the four-part series The Hillside Strangler from Sony’s The Intellectual Property Corporation, which is behind Netflix’s Night Stalker and Oxygen’s A Plan to Kill.

It will tell the story of how Kenneth Bianchi and his cousin Angelo Buono Jr. killed 12 women and girls in Buono’s upholstery shop in Glendale before dumping their bodies across the wooded hillsides in LA

It will tell how homicide detective Frank Salerno pursued the case and discovered that the acts were actually perpetrated by two men. Both were sentenced to life in prison.

Salerno will revisit the case in the series, which will also feature Bianchi, who is alive in prison and has never told his story (Angelo Buono died behind bars in 2002).

The Hillside Strangler is executive produced by IPC’s Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman; Tim Walsh, who exec produced Night Stalker; and Peter LoGreco, who also directs and serves as showrunner. The docuseries will premiere on January 18.

The Hillside Strangler is a compelling deep dive into an infamous serial killing that terrorized Southern California in the late 1970s,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “This docuseries delivers a riveting experience with unprecedented access to one of the most notorious cases in American criminal history, offering MGM+ viewers the premium, thought-provoking storytelling they’ve come to expect from our brand.”

IPC’s Holzman and Saidman added, “We’re thrilled to be working with Michael Wright and his team again on The Hillside Strangler after our first collaboration on The Wonderland Murderswhich was a great success on the platform. MGM+ continues to be an ideal home for gripping true crime sagas, and we’re proud to bring audiences the chilling and controversial tale of Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, crafted alongside our EP partners, Tim Walsh and EP/director Peter LoGreco.”
