If eyes are the window to the soul, then eyebrows are its window frames. And just like with a house, changing the color, shape or style of that frame can really change up the outside. Eyebrows can make or break a makeup look and can completely change how our faces appear. Downturned eyebrows can make someone look tired and high, overplucked eyebrows can make someone look perpetually surprised, etc. While everyone can try out different brow shapes and products, there is one main one eyebrow mistaken to avoidaccording to Anastasia Soarethe CEO and founder of Anastasia Beverly Hills.
Known as the “Queen of Eyebrows,” Soare spoke with Parade about what can really kill a makeup look and ultimately make it hard for you to work with the products you’re using on your face. Again, if you love a thin eyebrow or don’t tweeze at all, there are still dos and don’ts when it comes to how to use eyebrow products. Your brow shape and style are totally yours. But how you do your makeup up there can always become more streamlined.
Soare’s new book, Raising Brows: My Story of Building a Billion-Dollar Beauty Empirecame out Oct. 21, and in it, she tells her story of coming to America from Romania when it was a communist country. From having nothing to creating a mega-successful company, her story is an inspiring one. Her clients have included Oprah, Michelle Obama, Kim Kardashian, Hailey Bieber and more over the decades. The #1 Eyebrow Mistake To Avoid, According to Anastasia Soare
Again, the way you shape your eyebrows is your preference and hardly a mistake if you love it. butt how you do it is where the user error can come in. And for Soare, who has made it her life’s work to create superb eyebrow and makeup products, using too much of a good thing can actually be your downfall.
“The biggest mistake is applying too much product,” she tells Parade. “When you use too much product, brows can lose their natural hair-like texture and can look heavy or crunchy.”
Even though we might have gone through eyebrow blindness back in 2015 (I know I’m guilty of it), where we overused and overlined our eyebrows to create boxy brows, that’s not the look you actually want to go for. Especially not in 2025. It’s all about creating a natural-looking brow, and using too much eyebrow gel can mess with that.
“It’s especially important to use a small amount of product when using clear gel formulas; you want to avoid any white cast or flaking,” she continues. “Always aim to enhance, not cover. A featherlight touch creates the most flawless, natural-looking finish.”

Another Common Brow Mistake To Avoid
In addition to using too much product—which will create a crunchy, unnatural look—another common eyebrow no-no has to do with the direction in which you brush your brows.
“Another mistake is brushing the hair straight across,” Soare tells Parade. “This flattens the brow, clumps hair together and closes the eye.”
As she points out, this can create a one-dimensional look that can really stunt your glow. So she suggests giving yourself a “lifted” look instead.
“To create a lifted effect, brush the hair upwards towards the hairline,” she recommends. “This technique gives the brows a balanced, lifted effect for a youthful look.”

Tinted vs. Clear Eyebrow Gel: Which Is Best?
Also, when it comes to eyebrow gel, there’s the case of whether to use tinted gel or clear gel. What’s the difference? Well, as the names suggest, tinted eyebrow gels come in different shades. For example, Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Flexible Hold Tinted Eyebrow Gel ($22) comes in seven shades, ranging from blonde to red to brown and granite, for cool and warm undertones. And clear brow gel, like Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Brow Freeze Gel ($26), has a similar applicator but is just the gel with no color. Both hold your eyebrow hair in place; one just gives it some more color to create dimension and fill in if you have sparse brows.
So which should you reach for? Soare says, “It depends on your needs.”
“A tinted brow gel is ideal for adding color, fullness and quick definition,” she explains. “It helps address patchiness while allowing you to customize your brow shade—use tinted formulas to deepen, soften or adjust warmth and tone.”
As for clear brow gels, she shares that you should use this one if you’re just looking to set everything.
“Clear gels, on the other hand, are designed to set brow hairs and color in place,” she shares. “They’re perfect as a finishing step or on their own for a clean, minimal look. I love using both—it’s all about layering products to create your perfect brow. A good gel is essential for every brow style and perfect for on-the-go touch-ups.”
