SNL’s Michael Che Begins Weekend Update Early

Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update co-anchor, Michael Che, kicks off the segment early this week. The comedian slammed President Donald Trump and the federal government regarding his recent food stamp cutoff hours before tonight’s show.

In a post on Che’s official Instagram account, he voiced his opinion regarding the upsetting news. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed that funding (between 8 and 9 billion USD per month) for November’s SNAP benefits has run out due to the government shutdown. Beginning November 1, 2025, over 40 million US citizens are at risk of having their benefits paused for the foreseeable future.

Che revealed in his post that this was personal. Growing up, he relied on food stamps to survive, so seeing people in need having them stripped away hit close to home. “This SNAP freeze is really f***ed up,” he stated. “I grew up on free cheese and powdered milk and waiting for your friends to leave the store so they won’t see me pay with stamps. That sh*t ain’t as glamorous as it sounds. I promised.

The SNL star also justifiably criticized those who actually celebrated the recent news and firmly stated that people need to stop judging citizens who are just trying to survive. “This country is built on greedy mother*ckers taking shortcuts and gaming the system to their benefit, but for some reason, when poor people find a way to turn a nickel into a dime, they’re judged more severely, especially blacks.” His post said that everyone should put their political differences aside and draw the line at personal attacks when it comes to feeding the poor.

Although Trump claimed just last night (October 31 at the time of this article’s publication) that it was an “honor to provide the funding” and bragged about financially helping other organizations, two federal judges decided that the administration needed to use the $6 billion that was set aside.

Che and Colin Jost’s Weekend Update will air on November 1’s Saturday Night Live episodes at 11:30 PM ET and 8:30 PM PT.
